gabe_
That's still way too much money to spend for PAINFULLY slow backups. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/93873-apple-time-capsules-on-sale-at-best-buy/#findComment-670569 Share on other sites
Ongeloof
Do you know fro personal experience? Granted that the first backup is rumored to be fairly slow, but it is fine after tat. My TC is great, wouldn't trade it for anything. You can also change the HDD if you want to, just crack open the back Think Mark Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/93873-apple-time-capsules-on-sale-at-best-buy/#findComment-670722 Share on other sites

No. But by comparing the specs of 802.11n vs. eSATA I don't really think I need to. You can pick up 500GB eSATA drives for $130ish which will work wonderfully with Time Machine, AND be faster than a Time Capsule. There is not enough added value in the "wireless feature" for me to spend more money, AND take a performance hit. There is not enough added value in the "wireless feature" for me to spend more money, AND take a performance hit. Different strokes for different folks case in point... esata isn't exactly wireless now is it? so in that regard the comparison is off as you have to have a physical connection between your computer and that esata drive. if you opt to use it (tc) via one of the three gigabit ports, that might tip the equation somewhat, seeing as gigabit should yield considerably higher throughput than wireless, even 802.11n, ever will. on the price.. well i, too, think it's a bit steep all things considered. after all 500gig samsung sata drives are on sale for something like 75 euros around here. but then again apple claims the drives to be 'server grade' so that usually adds a buck and a half to a regular harddisk. throw in the printer port, it being wireless, etc... There is not enough added value in the "wireless feature" for me to spend more money, AND take a performance hit. Different strokes for different folks A few more things to take into consideration. Backup for everyone. Have multiple Macs in your house? Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Leopard-based Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. Time Capsule spares you the work. I don't think you can have more then one person connected to a eSATA drive for backups at the same time. And even if you could, I wouldn't want several long wires going around the house to connect to my external hard drive. More than just a wireless hard drive, Time Capsule is also a full-featured AirPort Extreme Base Station with 802.11n technology. Experience a high-speed wireless network and a breakthrough way to back up all the Mac computers on your network. All in one device. So when considering the price tag you may want to take that into account. But I admit it's not all that as you can certainly get cheap wireless routers nowadays. terrancew_hod
Well my time machine works well. I got it to manage the wireless backups of the various macbooks we have in the house. After the initial backup, the backups work transparently. BTW, I got mine with a government discount, not as good a discount as Best Buy, but a discount nonetheless.
