neocui
So I have 4GB of ram, and it causes the JMicronATA driver to crash in Leopard. Before you yell at me, let me just say: yes I know this is a known problem, and that you can fix it by doing one of the following things: 1. Remove 1 G of ram 2. Disable memory remapping in bios 3. set maxmem=3072M But I do intend on using all 4G of RAM. So the only thing I have that's hooked up to the JMicronATA controller is my PATA DVD drive. I don't use it much, it doesn't need to be fast. So I'm wondering if there is another driver I can use for the JMicronATA. I don't need UDMA100 or 66. PIO mode is fine. As long as I can read stuff out of the DVD drive, I don't care what the speed is. For other OS's like Windows or Linux, generally there is a generic ATA driver that will work with ALL ATA controllers in the very basic modes. I was wondering if there is one for Mac OS X that will work with the JMicron PATA controller. Searching on Google I found that there used to be a kext called, AppleGenericPCATA, which looks promising. Where can I find this driver. Does anyone have this? cyber_tods
I'm not sure about this, but I think this is your best option: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=88335 gl! Put in a SATA DVD drive disconnect the power cable to it or remove the IDE drive and it will work fine with 4gb of ram. mrogers
Yeah I don't know why people expend so much time and energy trying to get around this problem when you can solve it with a $25 SATA DVD drive. Let PATA finally die Exactly and you get better burn speeds using SATA as well using IDE it would usually start at some stupidly slow speed then gradually get up to full speed at the end, SATA usually starts at about 8-12x then quickly goes to full... Quackit
Yeah, I agree. Getting a SATA drive is the best solution for that. Mine should be in today, hopefully. I'm not sure I understand this correctly though. I've been trying to follow it, as I have 4GB of RAM and the JMicron controller on my board. Because of my board only having one IDE channel, and the fact that I have two internal HDDs that I have to run, I disconnected the IDE DVD drive once that I had Leopard installed. I've been running fine with no problems for about a week now. Is this only related to the older versions of of ASUS boards with the JM controller (or other brands with it) and/or IDE DVD/CD drives? I haven't disabled or enabled anything crazy in the BIOS as far as I know. I'm not currently using any SATA ports at the moment. vaporATX
Yeah I don't know why people expend so much time and energy trying to get around this problem when you can solve it with a $25 SATA DVD drive. Same reason people try to get crappy built-in sound to work, won't spend $9 bucks for an enet card, and vote republican. Quackit
I just read that enabling AHCI seems to solve the problem (but not for some?). That's possibly why I haven't had this problem, since I read that I should enable AHCI while picking out which board to buy. I had it enabled on first boot. MacUser2525
I just read that enabling AHCI seems to solve the problem (but not for some?). Perhaps but in my GA-965P-S3 I had a 200gb IDE drive hooked up but not in use and I could get a kernel panic on demand just by running the Highload program memory tester so I pulled the power to it no more panics the thing is though the Jmicron SATA controller works perfectly that is what I have OSX on in that machine. Let PATA finally die Well, I have 4 ICH8 SATA ports. 1 is leopard main drive, 1 for time machine, 1 for windows, and 1 for all my other {censored}... However there is one other SATA port on my motherboard, and that's the JMicron SATA port, which as far as I know has no driver. Perhaps I can get that port work in AHCI mode? Do DVD burners work in AHCI mode? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90457-jmicronata-and-4gb-ram-in-leopard/#findComment-646995 Share on other sites

neocui
I guess my next question would be: Does the AppleAHCIPort.kext recognize the JMicron SATA controller in AHCI mode? macwanabe
Hi all I am not having any luck, I have an extra Sil3132 controller so I disabled all the onboard controllers. Not using ICH9 or J Micron, deleted the kexts to make sure they don't load. I have 6 GIG of RAM installed tried only 4 GIG as well, still experiencing system hang when more than 3.2 GIG of ram is used. Easy way of using lots of ram is to use a parrallels VM with 2 GIG ram allocated. Then when you open some more software you quickly reach 3.2 GIG, the momement you do system hangs. Haven't had a Kernel Panic now had before at times with more than 4 GIG now system hangs. Using vanilla 10.5.2 and Gigabyte P35 DS3L motherboard and Transcend RAM. This would indicate that problem is not with ICH9 or J Micron Any input would be appreciated -M Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90457-jmicronata-and-4gb-ram-in-leopard/#findComment-648339 Share on other sites
ninetto
Sorry I don't have a water-tight solution to this, BUT following info: even in Windows, the implementation of JMicron in IDE or RAID mode is TOTALLY buggy, there are thousands of pages on various forums complaining about this... and I finally gave up on using the JMicron as RAID in XP. I do use the JMicron in the AHCI mode and have had much better luck, in XP as well in in OSX. I use it for eSata. So this seems to be another case of lousy implementation by the MB-manufacturers, and I won't spend half my life trying to un-do such a hard-core problem. JMicron/Intel will get their {censored} together one of these days... maybe. greetinz, ninetto Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90457-jmicronata-and-4gb-ram-in-leopard/#findComment-648515 Share on other sites
JustinAiken
I have 8 GB of ram, and need to use all of them... I just replaced my IDE burner with a SATA, and moved my IDE HD into a USB enclosure... was nice to get that huge ribbon out of the case. Now then, will I have to worry about panics, or do I still have to disable the jmicron controller in the BIOS? Because that knocks out eSata, which I need... I never got any panics using the AHCI mode only when it was set to IDE in the BIOS with an IDE device connected was I able to force it to panic like I said above so I'm thinking you will be fine.
