richtig
Quick question. I boot Leopard from and IDE HDD connected via USB. Everything works now, well 99%. That last 1% is accessing my DVDRW and my two other HDDs, all three of them are SATA. I'm wondering if I need AHCI enabled on my bios? I have a GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 3.3 and it has 6 SATA ports. 4 are Intel based, and the other two are called Gigabyte SATA? I'll say that when I installed Leo, it detected my HDD connected to SATA0 and my DVDRW which is connected to SATA1. But it didn't display the correct size for the HDD. My HDD connected SATA3 didn't get picked up at all. Is this normal? Thoughts? Comments? Wondering if maybe I should just get ready for a format and install everything with AHCI support... The AHCI bios settings won't affect any drives other than SATA drives. For the GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 3.3 board, only the 2 purple JMicron ports can provide AHCI support. Try switching the optical drive to some other Intel (orange) port. Other factors: The external drive's controller chip could affect the ability of OSX to "see" the optical drive. A different brand of external drive enclosure might give different results. Also, a motherboard bios setting; such as enable/disable "USB Legacy Support". You might have better luck installing OSX on an internal SATA hard drive. GivingUpOnMS
I'm almost not sure where to begin. In summary, I was about to order the components to build a high-end system to FINALLY move all my home videos off of the various tape formats and onto disk. Of course I was defaulting to a Windows system only due to old 'bad habits' (haven't been on a Mac since back when I did my PhD - forced to Windows by the business world!). My friend just happened to mention that if I order the 'right stuff', I could probably run a Mac environment as well (and maybe eventually INSTEAD of Windows!). However, I have no idea where to turn to find what's acceptable and what motherboards / chips / memory are NOT acceptable. Here's the motherboard, CPU and memory I was about to pull the trigger on and order. ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail OCZ Reaper HPC 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR800C32GK - Retail Combined with a couple of RAID 750GB drives and such I was going to move ahead. Is there somewhere to check compatibility of this type of a configuration with the end objective of running a Mac environment on it? Thanks for any and all help. Lester56
I think ToH refers to "Towers of Hanoi" and the OpenFirmware project. Google it. You are a mean mean man Ok, I've ordered the mobo, RAM, and CPU. I have found the install CD hack. Haven't found the BrazilMac DVD, as I will make my own. Will pickup the SATA drive and Pioneer DVD-R unit tonight at MicroCenter. Thanks for the current and continuous assistance!!! JonyBravo
It seems that your BrazilMac patch is an old one or not the original one. In your output of "/dev/disk2 /Volumes/Mac OS X Upgrade DVD 1", the newly created image volume name is wrong. It should be Mac OS X Install DVD. Furthermore, your BrazilMac patch doesn't have files, which should be there. Namely minibless, OSInstall.mpkg, and so on. I would grap the real BrazilMac patch (31 Oct 2007 version) first. Then try patch the Leopard GM DMG with it on a Mac or Hac running Tiger not Leopard. Good luck. --S Well, I found another BrazilMac package and inspected the script. It does indeed use different naming (ie; Mac OS X Install DVD). The numeral 1 in the above file name seems to be because I did not delete the first instance from my first test I still get a lot of "file not found" type messages. I have also verified that the Leopard "upgrade" DVD from Apple is a full install DVD (we tried it on an iMac from scratch). I must be doing something wrong, just not sure what. I have all the Brazil files and folders on my desktop, I have the DMG made from the DVD on my desktop, I modified the script to look to the desktop (replaced 'xxx' with user name), and have run the script (via terminal ala sudo) from the desktop folder. Perhaps I am not organizing the Brazil files correctly on my desktop so the script can find them? Do I have to do anything with the Leopard image (permissions?, etc.)? What is a Leopard 'GM' image? How do I know which build I have? Might I be making the wrong kind of image? Should I use something other than Disk Utility to make the image? Sorry for so many questions. But enquiring minds want to know! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/72493-leopard-perfect-install/page/20/#findComment-534272 Share on other sites

alexthepirate098
sorry for the question if its been asked a bunch of times but exactly how do you put the usb drive together? for instance do the dsmos and apple kexts go in the pc efi folder? When entering the chown commands in the terminal it says volume not found or something like that? the drive is formated at fat32. Thanks in advance for the help. Lester56 you can create a dmg file with disk utility i think. JonyBravo
Here are answers to your not-so-many questions. (About the original image) GM is short for Gold Master. Among all different versions in development, the version picked up to be published as a new system is called GM version. In case of Leopard, version 9A581 is GM. As a consequence, the retail version is the GM version. The size of the GM DVD is over 6GB and the volume is "Mac OS X Installation DVD" if I remember correctly. There's no upgrade version in sale. If you have an upgrade version, I would make sure it's GM version. (But then without installing it, you may have no clue what version it is. Other than you have an image known to be GM and compare the suspected one with it.) If you have ~4.7GB one, you are likely looking at an already BrazilMac patched version (or something else). If your image has wrong size or wrong volume name (which is true in your case), I would toss it and look for the right one because even if it's from Apple, there's no guarantee that BrazilMac patches it correctly anyway. (About the missing files) You are organizing everything right. Because from your previous post with code, the original DMG image reading was good and shell script was running. But make sure that you have the original image, and three folders (files, resources, leopatch) and two files (9a581-patch.sh and 9a581PostPatch.sh) which are came from BrazilMac on your desktop. But also I know that minibless from your BrazilMac patch is missing. Open the Terminal and type this:ls ~/Desktop/files | grep "minibless" If the output is notminiblessthen you have a wrong BrazilMac patch. If what you have is a good working BrazilMac patch, the size is about ~13.4MB. I got mine from BrazilMac's guide on OSX86 Scences. As long as you are a super user, the permission of the image (or patch files) does not really matter. If your error is indeed caused by permission, you are likely to see "... not allowed" not "missing ...". I wish you nail down this problem ASAP. --S Thank you so much for your wonderful insights! I have managed to figure out that the image I made of my Leopard DVD actually has a volume label of "Mac OS X Upgrade DVD". The script is looking for "osx86dvd" which exists, but is empty. Let me know if you think I'm on the right track. Oh, and how do I change the label so it reads what I want? JonyBravo
Hi John,It's a lot easier to change the shell script than volume name. I went over your output again. 9a851-patch.sh fails on line 25 because it was looking for "Mac OS X Install DVD" but you have "Mac OS X Upgrade DVD". Replace the line 25 of 9a851-patch.sh with diskutil rename /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Upgrade\ DVD/ osx86dvd and try the patch again. Let me know how it goes. --S Wow. I also do not know why I missed that part in the script. No errors reported. Time to burn the disk. Stay tuned for further results. JonyBravo
In your output code, the error actually reported. The usage of diskutil was the hint.--S Sorry, I meant to say that I changed the script and now there are no errors. The new leo-patched-dvd is written and appears to be functional. djchaos82
Hi, i have problems getting Leopard up and running. It installs fine and even displays the intro-video, but i can't add my user account. When it reaches the "Do you already own a Mac"-Screen, i choose "Do not transfer my Information", click continue and after a minute or so (spinning ball), it goes right back to the intro animation. I can do this over and over again, it doesn't change. I have absolutely no clue what do to. I use a combination of these two guides for installing: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=73952 http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=72493 I used http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=73952 for installing EFI 8 and GUID and then just removed/replaced AppleSMBIOS.kext, dsmos.kext, AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. I have a nvidia-card, but i don't want to use NVinject but the the gfx_tring with netkas' efi, and i doubt that's the problem . Hopefully someone here knows what's the problem... b4sakenxx
does he mean a restart fix?Yes, its a restart fix. And I can confirm it works because I'm using it.The AHCI bios settings won't affect any drives other than SATA drives. For the GA-965P-DS3 Rev. 3.3 board, only the 2 purple JMicron ports can provide AHCI support. Try switching the optical drive to some other Intel (orange) port.Other factors: The external drive's controller chip could affect the ability of OSX to "see" the optical drive.A different brand of external drive enclosure might give different results. Also, a motherboard bios setting; such as enable/disable "USB Legacy Support".You might have better luck installing OSX on an internal SATA hard drive.Actually, I figured out the problem after reading up on AHCI.Yeah you're right, only the purple JMicron ports support AHCI because only the Intel Chipsets ending in R/DO/DH support AHCI on the Intel ports. So I went and dug around the Gigabyte website because I knew that in order to boot my windows partition with AHCI, I would need a driver. Lo and behold there was a GSATA2 Raid driver just sitting there on the downloads page. Installed it. Shut down, changed my setup to Main HDD and DVDRW on purple JMicron ports, and Storage HDD on Intel Port. Rebooted into XP and everything was fine. Rebooted again, this time into Leopard, and BOOM, there was my DVDRW drive and my main harddrive. Now the only issue is getting my Storage drive recognized, and for that, I need IDE support. But if i reinstall into my internal drive, then I suppose I could use this external as an extra storage drive strictly for OSX.Thinking I'll write a guide for this board soon. Cheers! Note:There are now MANY confirmed people on the forum running 10.5.1 - please read through for various board issues and how they were overcome Confirmed installations : Onetrack, Stellarolla, Doug The Impaler, jngletiger_im, Macmaniac, flibblesan, Brywalker, bigvalboa, bigcletus, eleavampas, elfdood, sojasMAC, sticman, Ho11ywood45, Memphis2K, Replicant, SwissTurbo, Pepes01, Plas, abeltcb, rpmsquita, BJoestein, Chinasky, steadyboot, decilling, Yoshiko Washima, Weaksauce12, sdmac Direct link to my video because I know you all want to see it Congrats guys - hope you like your new Hack Pro's --------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Folks, Here is a quick how to which will be fleshed out over the next little bit as to a full installation method for Leopard with a properly created Brazilmac disk, the Kalyway Make Boot CD for Leopard and the kexts you need for a perfect system. First off, see my sig for the computer used in this build, YMMV but I picked up my motherboard for 56.00 and its well worth it. Note - terminal commands are bolded Items you will need: 1 USB Flash drive (that you know the volume NAME of) On the USB key, put the following items, unzip where needed. pc_efi V5.2 (its the latest) NOTE PC_EFI V7 is now out and includes grub - we are testing this solution to see if we need the kalyway disk still dsmos.kext AppleSMBIOS.kext NVinject for Leopard (only if you have an Nvidia based card, if not - ignore any references in the guide to NVinject) 1 Copy of a properly prepared Brazilmac disk 1 Copy of the Kalyway boot prepare cd for Leopard First make sure your assembled computer is able to boot off the DVD drive, insert the Kalyway cd and press any key to boot the cd when you are prompted. After about 5 minutes you will come to a slimmed down tiger install, go to Disk Utility and partition, prepare your drive as you require. Once you are happy make a note of what you called the drive, it will be the [Volume Label] and you will need to know it during patching later. When the disk utility completes, exit it and continue through the installer, there will be 1 package already selected, install it and you are done. Reboot with the BrazilMac dvd in place of the Kalyway disk, same procedure - it will take about 20 minutes to fully boot to the install screen, go have a drink or some food while you wait. At the installer do NOT use disk utility, instead continue with the installer, make sure CUSTOMIZE is selected and DESELECT all packages (Printers, Fonts, X11 etc) that you can, just install the bare system. If you want to have the system check your installation media go ahead, otherwise skip - it takes about 10 minutes. Once the installation is complete you will have to shutdown the computer manually, power on, and again boot into the installer (again, another 20 minutes or so). In the installer, this time go to Utilities -> Terminal. At the #prompt cd to /Volumes/[usb drive name] I called mine PATCHER. Now its time to get friendly with the command line, the commands are simple you are changing the location and ownership of the kext files you have on your usb key. Edit: The first step to do is to remove the original AppleSMBIOS.kext file as you will be putting another in its place and it will not copy over correctly if the one that was installed by Brazilmac exists. skipping this step may cause your computer to have a stop error on bootup. You can do this by typing in rm -rf /Volumes/[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext first: dsmos.kext cp -R dsmos.kext /Volumes/[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/ then AppleSMBIOS.kext cp -R AppleSMBIOS.kext /Volumes/[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/ Optional if you have an Nvidia card: cp -R NVinject.kext /Volumes/[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/ Now chown the lot of them: chown root:wheel /Volumes/[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/dsmos.kext chown root:wheel /Volumes/[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSMBIOS.kext chown root:wheel /Volumes/[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/NVinject.kext And change permissions You can change the permissions of all of them at the same time cd /Volumes[Volume Label]/System/Library/Extensions/ [enter] chmod -R 755 dsmos.kext AppleSMBIOS.kext NVinject.kext And delete the CPU Power Management - Netkas says its useless and removing it hasn't hurt my system at all. rm -rf AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext It is time to patch EFI/Bios - the command is pretty straight forward, but you will need to know your RDISK information - if you don't know, at the terminal prompt type enter - mount [enter] it will spit back information like this: /dev/disk0s2 on /Volumes/Storage 500 A (hfs, local, journaled) /dev/disk2s2 on /Volumes/Storage 500 B (hfs, local, journaled) /dev/disk1s1 on /Volumes/LEOPARD (hfs, local, journaled) The Volume label you are looking for is the one you installed Leopard onto earlier. At this point, you should exit terminal and load up disk utility unmount the drive that you installed LEOPARD to, when done exit disk utility and go back to terminal to your USB drive cd /Volumes/[usb drive name]/pc_efi [enter] type the following: ./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskXsX ./boot_v5 [enter] where rdiskXsX is the drive and slice identifier you saw in the mount command in my example, mine is disk1s1 (just put an r in front of it) It should write about 7 lines of text, and exit. Quit Terminal. Now back to Disk Utility, and do a repair permissions on your drive, this is optional, but it probably won't hurt - safe to do and it might save you another 20 minute bootup into the installer just to do this. Shutdown your computer, power on, eject the disk - and if all goes well you are now booting a completely unmodified kernel right to the welcome screens. Once at the desktop check to see whats working - if you have a realtek based motherboard, like the one in my signature - you should have internet, audio will not yet be working most likely - if you have the Gigabyte 945GCMX-S2 You can seek out and add in the ALC888 patch now to get all 6 audio ports functioning (including audio IN). You can't reboot now, if you try the computer will HANG, you must shutdown and manually restart if you need to. When ready to patch up your system to 10.5.1 - simple use the software update tool, when it completes manually shutdown - bootup but when you see the DARWIN bootloader hit F8 until you get a prompt and boot in single user mode with -s [enter] At the prompt you must type in: fsck -fy [enter] this will verify and repair any permissions that the update altered. when its done, power off - reboot check your system profile, if all is well, it'll look like this: Hardware Overview: Model Name: Mac Model Identifier: Mac Pro Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 4 MB Memory: 2 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Boot ROM Version: Hack.int.0sh Serial Number: LALALALALALALALLA YOU NOW HAVE A MAC PRO ! EDIT: TIME MACHINE FIX To fix Time Machine, you need to get the modified file IONetworkingFamily_581.zip from the usual places, unzip it onto your desktop, and navigate to /System/Library/Extensions - Right click or Command Click to show package contents. Then further navigate to Contents --> MacOS and drop the file there simply replacing the old one. You will be asked to Authenticate, enter your password to do so. Of course we need to go into the command line again for proper permissions, open terminal and type the following. sudo su [enter] put in your password when prompted. cd /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/MacOS/ [enter] chown root:wheel IONetworkingFamily chmod 775 IONetworkingFamily And you are done ! TIME MACHINE is now fully working Have fun - you have a Vanilla Kernel and the machine will rock. post pix of your builds Any questions - let me know.. I'll constantly edit this guide Special thanks to my buddy Stellarolla who stuck with me through 6 hours of broken installations until I finally gave in and got the Kalyway disk (GET IT, none of this will work without it.) Of course thanks and greets out to Netkas for making PC_EFI work, Torque for sticking with us and answering questions, EVERYONE involved in the grand exchange of ideas for making this house of cards actually work You know who you are.
