Krazubu
I wondered if it was possible to hack .mac for using it with any custom server and found some resources confirming it is. Here's a page I found : http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/1748245 If you are interested, let's work on this and give feedback about your results. I don't have a box to dedicate to this but does anyone know if it would work for iWeb? suleiman
i would presume so. iWeb seems to be want only to work with a .mac webaddress or nothing at all. extremely limiting really. ozzie123
Actually, you can use iWeb to "export" the data to your local box and then you can manually upload it to your online box. dkelley
just a note about .mac - I liked it enough to actually pay for it. I'm a full subscriber to it now and it's an excellent service. I have osx on my work dell laptop and on my home pc (and am just waiting for the 20" core duo imacs to appear in my local future shop before buying one (easier to return it to FS if there's an issue than through amazon or apple.com)). With .mac and the idisk I can drop pics and other items on my home idisk and see it at work by the time I drive there (I leave my home Mac on 24/7 - reliable operating system!). I modded my .mac prefs to give me almost a full gig of idisk space with almost no .mac mail space (I use gmail for free with apple Mail). And having the .mac integration in iLife '06 is just so freakin cool... I know it's a lot of money, but for those who CAN afford it .mac really is worth it when you use multiple macs. Especially if you work in a different city than you live, as I do. No more burning cd's full of data every day. I just drag and drop and walk away! However - I personally believe that Apple should offer limited use free subscriptions to all official computer purchasers. You know, like 150 megs max or something, not a time limited 50 megs max version (which is just annoying really). Anyone who buys a real mac from Apple deserves these sorts of rewards IMHO. I always was a bit of a communist at heart... dkelley Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7031-create-your-own-mac-server/#findComment-49742 Share on other sites
Takuro
Even as a seasoned veteran of well... trying to avoid paying for stuff... I'll have to admit this is just one of those things that, if you really want it, you have no choice but to buy it. Everybody I know says it's a great service. Even if I do get a "free" copy of 10.4.4 running on my system, I'd like to try dot Mac. You can try the whole free server thing, but for reliability I'd go with the real thing. I don't usually hold this opinion. This is an exception. So to all you others, yeah I'm still cheap and I'm not buying your damn girlscout cookies! *slams door* Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7031-create-your-own-mac-server/#findComment-50000 Share on other sites
scousi
I wonder if it would be legal to offer a cheaper dot mac service than Apple to the mac "community" at large. sigxcpu
I've did it! I have my own .mac service and it works exactly like the real one. Slow as hell Uploading files takes a life. Dropped the project Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7031-create-your-own-mac-server/#findComment-50191 Share on other sites
sportman
i might be able to get a sever to put it on, did anyone actually check the legality though? Swad
Shouldn't be illegal at all. Sounds like a great idea though! As the slashdot article notes, you could set this for a local box and do syncing close with the option of external sync as well. Very handy. Killer Loop
Maybe the OSX86Project should have it's own .mac service up and running... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7031-create-your-own-mac-server/#findComment-50454 Share on other sites
ohpossum
The following site is more recent and has much more info: http://www.tnpi.biz/computing/mac/tips/idisk/ I used these instructions to make a ".Hac" site as well. Its not 100%, but iDisk works, and thats the main thing I was looking for. I'm hoping its possible to patch the various applications to use different site names other than "www.mac.com", "idisk.apple.com", etc. op EDIT: I tried changing idisk.mac.com in /System/Library/Filesystems/URLMount/http.URLMounter/Contents/MacOS/http to the name of my homebrew server, and short story, it didn't work. You might be able to replace idisk.mac.com with a name thats exactly the same number of characters, but idisk.mac.com is in a ton of other files.
