cacak333
Hello everybody... i want to make a little tutorial about how to install OSX on the Striker Extreme Mobo....i know its the mercedes under the mobo´s so it has to work perfect with OSX The mobo has the Nvidia 680i chipset...so i searched the forum and wiki.x86 if it´s possible with Nvidia chipset to install OSX? i didnt find good solutions...because some said yes and some no: so no way i had to test it myself to find out that YES it works...it also works great with the 8800 GTS card before i tell you how you can make it....i have to tell you what system i exactly have: Motherboard: Asus Striker Extreme 680i (new revision with open heatpipe!) NB & SB are both 680i Nvidia chipset Bios 1303 LAN -> Marvell PHY Dual Gbit - 88E1116 Audio -> Asus Supreme FX Card - AD1988B CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo - E6850 @ 3,6ghz @ 1,32v @ 8x450mhz FSB Graphic Card: XFX - Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS 640MB @600/900mhz RAM: 4 x 1GB OCZ 9200 Reaper @ ddr900 @ cl 4-4-4-4 1T Hard Disk: 2 x 320GB Samsung SATA2 @ Nvidia RAID 0 1 x 250GB Samsung IDE DVD-RW LG H42L - ATA @ so with that system i had OSX installed! i will now tell you how i made a installation of OSX 10.4.8 (8.8.1 kernel) + an update to 10.4.9 (8.8.1 kernel) SATA dont work for me....i had to install it on my other IDE Hard Disk....but this better because i have Vista & Win XP on the 2 SATA Hard Disks on a RAID 0 stripe... 1. Preparing for the installation 1.1 search in google for "JaS 10.4.8 AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2" and download it...i download it via torrent and it has to be an 4,3GB .iso file! 1.1a check with a tool "cpu-z" what kind of SSE comands your cpu have (SSE2 or SSE2/SSE3) remeber that! 1.2 burn the downloaded iso file with nero as a DVD....it will be a bootable DVD 1.3 shutdown the pc...now connect ony this things: - mouse (ps2) - keyboard (ps2) - monitor cable....in my way it was a DVI 1.4 connect an IDE Hard Disk on the Master IDE channel....also connect the DVD as Slave 1.5 start the pc now and boot into bios by pressing "DEL" during boot up 1.6 make your pc boot from DVD as first device 1.7 disable USB-Legacy Support under "USB Configuration" 1.8 insert a Win XP installion disk and reboot your PC and boot in the Win installation menue 1.9 create a partion "C:" that means the first partition on the HD (size from 6GB - 120GB -> not bigger!) and then format it as FAT32 !!! -> you dont have to do it that way....you can make it like me....boot from SATA where my win XP is installed and create the partition with tools like "acronis disk" or "magic partiton"....but dont forget to make the partiton on the IDE as FAT32 and it must be the first partiton (so an active one!) on the HD and not bigger than 120GB! --> after creating partition -> reboot! 2. Installation of OSX 2.1 Insert the install DVD and boot from 10.4.8 Jas DVD 2.2 you will see an apple logo spinning or white letters are filling the black screen...it can take a while....after that you will get into the install menue where you have to choose your language....ill choose english for this tutorial 2.3 now on the top of the screen, click ‘Utilities’ and then ‘Disk Utility’ 2.4 Disk Utility starts. Select your Hard Disk (the whole Hard Disk, not just a partition). Hit the erase tab and set the Volume Format to “Mac OS extended (journaled)”. Hit Erase. Wait until the process finishes and close Disk Utility (by clicking the red dot at the top left corner of the screen). 2.5 Follow the installation steps on your screen, select the HD with the partition you made in step 2.4 2.6 Now you have to click "customize" that means: you have to choose some apps you want...OSX version are differnet, some have more app´s and some only the most important ones...but you must choose: - intel SSE 2 or intel SSE3 patch (depends on your cpu) -> the only thing and very important! 2.6a you can also choose (if its on your OSX DVD version) - the azaliaa driver -> for the supreme fx card - if you have any geforce 6,7-> titan or natit driver (when you have Nvidia 8800 -> DONT CHOOSE THESE DRIVER!!!) - ift you have ATI -> ATI driver 2.7 now click the install button -> the installion will take a while -> when its finished it will reboot automatically 2.8 now boot from the IDE Hard disk where you installed OSX (so dont again from DVD) and finish the installation! after installation was finished you should have to do it like 3a.) when you dont get into OSX...you have a problem...like a kernel panic or a picture where it says: "please push the restart button..." so that means that something is wrong with your driver....not with the JAS 10.4.8 (8.8.1 kernel)version because that version works with Striker! i my way i had a problem....it was the 8800GTS in combination with the 680i nforce chipset! so when you have the same card or the same problem do it like 3b.) 3a. First start (normal way without kernel panic) 3.1a now you have installed succesfull the 10.4.8 OSX version 3.2a fill out some things like name of computer, time, date.....and so on 3.3a welcome to OSX 3b. First start (with problem -> 8800GTS + nforce chipset) 3.1b at the point when it says "Darwin loading..." press the F8 button.....so that you can to the boot menue (it looks like a kind of console, where you can write) 3.2b now you have the chance to boot with options....type: -v and press enter....that means you will boot in verbose mode to sse what exactly the problem is! 3.3b in my way it was the "NVDAResman.kext" that causes the kernel panic....you see it at the last lines what the problem is! 3.4b you have now to remove the files ".kext" that causes the kernel panic (problem) 3.5b restart your pc and get to the darwin boot menue by pressing F8...now type: -s -v and press enter.....you will get to the console where you have to delete the "NVDAResman.kext".....so you type: /sbin/mount -uw / rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NVDAResman.kext reboot if you have any other problem you have to do it the same way....but replace the "NVDAResman.kext" withe the .kext that causes the problem! 3.6 now you will boot normal into OSX and finish the installation by edit you name, date, time....and so on 4. Update from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9 without updating the kernel! (10.4.9 you will need for geforce 8800....if you dont have geforce 8800.... you dont have to update) 4.1 do the update (update 10.4.9 without updating kernel) with the tutorial on this site: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...c=45283&hl= 5. Installing Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS on the striker (requiers 10.4.9/10.4.10) 5.1 Download the latest version of Mac.Nub´s G80_Installer from this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...t=0&start=0 (thanks Mac.Nub & Co.) 5.2 at install menue choose "amd/nforce fix" + "your 8800 geforce card"....its important to chosse "amd/nforce fix" otherwise you will get kernel panic and do it from 3.1b) again! 5.3 restart and pray 5.4 OSX works with your 8800 now ....or you have a kernel panic...then you have to do the steps 3.1b) again 6. Installing the Driver (i found out how to get the audio working (stereo only) ) Audio -> working, but only stereo....and no input SATA -> working....i can see SATA drives in system profiler....but i dont know if you can make a partition or even install osx because i have WINDOWS RAID installed on them (please try it and post result!) LAN -> working 6.1a AUDIO-> download the Azalia.kext and drop / copy it to the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder....maybe you have to enter your password! 6.2a then open the terminal and type: sudo -s [enter your password] diskutil repairpermissions / rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext reboot 6.3a after reboot you will have audio enabled....but only stereo and no input! 6.1b LAN->big thanks to "MikeInNS" follow his tutorial and both onboard LAN adapter will work: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=73317 6.1c SATA-> download the "AppleNForceATA.kext" 6.2c copy this file to /System/Library/Extensions/ 6.3c type this in terminal: sudo -s [enter your password] diskutil repairpermissions / rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext reboot 6.4c after reboot you will have SATA working and better performance on PATA....if it dont work add your Vendor and Device ID in the Info.plist located in /System/Library/Extensions/AppleNForceATA.kext/Contents/ then it have to work known problems: - i dont know why but when you dont have a ps2 mouse insert....so only the ps2 keyboard...your cant write with your keyboard under OSX....it says: ApplePS2Controller dont working! - the "AppleNforceATA.kext" dont work correct...it makes system freeze....but i dont know why....checking this out i hope the tutorial will help some to get his striker or even 680i mobo "hackintoshed" so please respond to this tutorial...like what is good what is bad....what can i add...and so on! or maybe someone got LAN working or SATA for nforce chipset....so please post a how to....thanks in advice...! if you dont understand something or got problems with your OSX installation on a Striker Extreme the send me a message at the end....i will tell you that if you doing my tutorial all ist at your own risk.... thanks, cacak333 (tchaa-tchaa-k-333) p.s sorry for my bad english AppleNForceATA.kext.zip AzaliaAudio.pkg.zip Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/66256-asus-striker-extreme-680i-how-toosx-1049/ Share on other sites
DavidLeite
Hello My friend... Seems like you've got a way to access SATA Hard Drives. What about installing OSX directly into them ? I'm having this problem that I can't see my SATA HD on the installer disk utility! Do you know anything I can do ? Thanks a lot! Gelakinetic
Hi. I too have similar hardware, so I figured I'd follow this guide. I have an EVGA 680i LT SLI motherboard with an EVGA 8800gts (640mb ram) and an intel core2duo @2.66ghz. I could not find a 10.4.8 JAS install disk, so I used a 10.4.9 uphuck 1.4i R2. I also was using USB based mouse and keyboard. I don't know if that is affecting it, but it won't boot! I booted in verbose mode, and I took a photograph of where it stops. It doesn't say anything about any .kext files. Then again, I don't really know how to read one of those screens. I attached it for anyone who would care to take a look. Oh, and I can boot it into a command line with -s -v, but a GUI would be nice. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks! -Gelakinetic Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/66256-asus-striker-extreme-680i-how-toosx-1049/#findComment-474633 Share on other sites
Forceman
Best off using 10.4.8, I'm pretty sure the System.kext and some others panic the system with 10.4.9/10.4.10 on certain hardware, this is why you use your old kext's when upgrading to 10.4.9/10.4.10. Gelakinetic
Hmm, I did not know that 10.4.9 was more unstable than its predecessors. Sadly, I am on an untorrentable college campus, and I only managed to get 10.4.9 from a friend. Is there any way I can get the 10.4.8 system.kext and replace my current panic-y one with it from the command line? Gelakinetic
Hm, let me rephrase my question. I am trying the elusive triple-boot, and I have ubuntu linux all working, so I can access my OSX partition from linux and add/remove files, but do you know where I can get a copy of the 10.4.8 system.kext too replace my 10.4.9 version with? thanks! tmazzoni
6.1b LAN-> dont work....there is a driver "forcedeth"....i will test it and post the results !!! Hi mate, my configuration is similar to yours. You can read it in my signature. The problem with the MCP55 / Marvell 88E1116 PHY LAN is hard to solve. I've spent hours trying to make it work with forcedeth.kext / forcedeth-nock.kext, but dmesg gives me the the following messages: forcedeth: Initializing. forcedeth: Probing. forcedeth: WARNING - your nVidia device 0x10DE:0x0373 is not known to work. Continuing anyway... forcedeth: Starting. forcedeth: PCI system 0x10DE:0x0373, subsystem 0x1043:0xCB84 opened. forcedeth: Mapped from 0xEFFFA000 of length 4096. forcedeth: Allocated 3072 bytes of contiguous memory for DMA: rx at 0x3c97a000, tx at 0x3c97a400, wired at 0xf6e7000. forcedeth: Found nForce4 LAN with MAC: 00:1A:92:9B:D0:B4. forcedeth: Found PHY 0x5040:0x0003 at address 19. but then no ethernet connection is up. I thought I should find a driver for the Marvell 88E1116, but none is out there, and skge.kext just doesn't work (in fact, it's not supposed to). The fact is that if you download an updated pcidevs.txt (search Google), this device just isn't listed. So no Vendor nor Device IDs, neither can I figure them out under linux with the lspci command, they just don't show up. Maybe they're those 5040:0003? I'm helpless. cacak333
hello people im running now my hakintosh about 1 week stable....so no errors or something! so with the tutorial you will get a working striker extreme or even a NV 680i mobo....i hope so @DavidLeite i dont know if the SATA is really working.....read, write and no errors....? i can see them in system profiler....but i cant work with them because there is a windows RAID 0 of both hard disk.....so if i want to test i have to erase, format them and this i wont do your question about installing them directly......this could be possible but you have to integrate the "AppleNForceATA.kext" into the installing image.....i dont know how to do that! so maybe some one know how to make it ??? @Gelakinetic in my first installation i used the same version of mac like you "10.4.9 uphuck 1.4" but i cant even boot with that version.....i think thats no good version for the NV 680i! i only had succes with the "JAS 10.4.8" version with kernel 8.8.1 like i wrote in the tutorial! then i made the "jas combo update" to 10.4.9.....so updating the version from 10.4.8 -> 10.4.9 and the kernel from 8.8.1 -> 8.9.1.....but the result was that i cant boot the system....now way! that means that the kernel is the problem! i think kernel 8.9.x dont work with NV mobo´s ? so dont try to install 10.4.9 and change from linux the "system" files with that from 10.4.8..... install only 10.4.8....then update to 10.4.9 without updating the kernel.....then install the geforce 8800 driver.....then it will work @Forceman thanks for helping @tmazzoni im helpless too but you have found out more then me i think the only way to get a working driver is to wait until some reads this thread and program a driver for us ...... cwackduck
Hey Cacak333, thanks a lot! I followed this tutorial and overall it has worked out very well. Joined this forum just to do this and tell ya thanks. My setup is similar but a bit different: Intel Core2quad Q6600 CPU 4gb (2x2gb gskill pc2 6400) RAM EVGA Nvidia 8800gts 640mb MSI P6N-Diamond Mobo - This is mainly the big difference here. The P6N has the same 680i nForce chipset which accepted the 8800gts kexts great and the NforceSata kext (haven't tried SATA yet but it helped out the pata A LOT!) The only things I'm out on right now are the audio and the LAN. The audio is a bit tricky in my case because I have an integrated Creative X-fi built in that, to my knowledge now, doesn't have any kexts that work for it. As for the LAN, I'm pretty sure they're Nvidia based, too but I'll have to boot back to Windows to find out for sure. If anyone knows where I might find any of those two that would help out a LOT. Otherwise, thanks a ton. I've been wanting to do this since i got the rig and this tutorial, along with the 8800gts kexts sealed the deal. Also, thanks for making this whole thing as straight forward as you did, helped me out a lot because I'm a total n00b when it comes to the inner workings of Macs. THANKS! ::EDIT:: Checked up on my lan connection, it's the Nvidia MCP55 controller. I think I've read they're having issues with it still. Meh, either way I'll keep an eye out and help if I can. DvP
Hi guys, i have also a very similar configuration but when i boot up mac os theres a serious problem. But first my system: Asus P5N32-SLI (less heatpipes than striker ;-)) Intel Q6600 2 SATA HDDs 1 Pata HDD 1 Sata DVD-Writer Now my problem is, that anything works perfect until i boot mac os. The gui and the keyboard setup shows up and mouse and keyboard work properly, but i cant configure the keyboard. The manager always asks for a layout and i can't choose any because the list is empty. Thats after i chose the language and the iso (europe) profile. i just cant come through. If i boot up with both PS2 the gui doesnt recognize this input devices, even if i disable legacy usb in the bios. I am nearly freakin out. Can anybody help me? Jas 10.4.8 ??? maybe your problem is that you have a bad osx install image? because the keyboard layout is loading from the dvd install image! if i were you i would download a new install version.....google for "JaS 10.4.8 AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2" i have this version and it works 100% with your P5N32-E SLI ! let me know if you figured it out..... CarmeB
@insania no sorry....no news i have for leopard on the striker we have to wait....but i think in the future their will be a chance to get it work....so only we have to wait this thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...69705&st=40 you have to follow....if their is succes for 680i....it will be in this thread p.s. how much FSB you can run with your striker and the Q6600? is FSB over 400mhz possible? i heard that 400FSB is not stable, but 425FSB is stable! i have 377 of fsb, but higher than this, my os become unstable...i haven't tried 425, which is the value in the striker bios, to set at 425?
