i just got 9a466, and i am wondering if i should put this on my external hard drive, or as my main os. is it too buggy to be used on a regular basis? does anyone know if i will be able to upggrade to the next system via software update?

I'm actually using it as my main OS right now. I have Tiger on my USB drive as backup. For what I do, 9a466 is pretty surprisingly stable. It does hang and crash sometimes, but it's not a big deal for me. If you do want compatibility though with many 3rd party apps, stick with 10.4. I'm taking a big risk right now because I don't mind to do a fresh install if a newer version comes out. If you're looking just to kick the tires, by all means use an external drive.

I set up Leopard in a 32gb boot-camp created partition, and I tried to have it as my startup drive for a few days and when I was initially installing software, stuff like google desktop didn't work and pretty much that was the end of it for me.

I'm not zero'ing my main hd in my MacBook and am installing Tiger fresh after making a SuperDuper! backup to my external drive

I've been using it as my main OS since it hit pirate bay, at first I just tested it out a little, but found it to be very, very stable and so used disk utility's new non-destructive partitioning to give my freespace over to the leopard boot. The most I get is the occassional silent adium crash and safari not downloading a few files incorrectly, all stuff I can cope with when compared to the quality of the new finder, which is easily the biggest strength of the OS if you ask me, the file sharing/screen sharing tools are top notch.

I've been using it as my main system for a few weeks now and haven't needed to swap back yet. I probably would have if Spaces hadn't become such an integral part of my workflow. I find it to be generally pretty stable, but have to reboot at least once a day (as opposed to, well, when new updates came out in final release 10.4).

I do find it to be very slow, though. General usage is fine, but as soon as one processor intensive task starts, such as unraring a big archive, the rest of the system slows to a crawl. My MacBook Pro would handle far, far more than this without batting an eyelid on 10.4.

There are lots of bugs, but few that really bother me. The new dock is quite touchy, though. I keep dragging things off it by mistake. Never used to do that. I'm used to the transparent menubar now, but I can't say I'd miss it if it went back to a solid colour. Should definitely be an option in Finder preferences. New Finder is good, but I don't like the way it handles media files. When using column view you can preview a video in the end column, but you don't get controls, so no skipping through it. Sure, there's Quickview, but needs a whole new Window.

I find neither Quickview nor Coverflow in Finder have had much use from me, but I expect that'll change over time. Old habit die hard, I guess.

On a big plus, Mail now filters out almost all spam, including those annoying image ones. On 10.4 I'd get about 1000 a day, and Mail would catch about 990 of them. Mail now catches all 1000 most days, and only the odd one or two slip through on occasion.

If I wasn't invested in using this now I'd definitely roll back to 10.4, but the point of no return has passed for me. I recommend installing on a seperate drive first.

I've been using it for 1 or 2 weeks and it's really good. While with 9A410 I had about 10 KP a day, I now only have about 3 a week. It's really fast for my PowerBook 12". Safari for example is a way faster to launch, as well as is the system.

I like the new Finder but it's not really usable with such a computer, you can't really use CoverFlow. Spaces is very very good. I now use it all the time.

The look of the Dock and menu bar is OK.

Quickview is a very good tool.

For the moment, I must say this is a very good release to me, especially compared to 9A410 or WWDC'06.
