Hello all,

Tomorrow morning, the family and I going to the vets to put down my poor 11 year old cat, Sophie. The poor thing is just getting to old and you can tell by the look in her eyes that she just can't hang in any longer. I grew up with this cat for most of my life, so you can imagine how upset i must be. But because of this, i grew up thinking that all cats had the same personality as she does. She is such a loving, affectionate, and cuddling cat, and I'm really going to miss that about her. And I know that I'm never going to be able to find a cat quite like her.

I know I'm probably not going to get a new pet for a few months or so, I don't want to get a new one too soon, or else it will just be thought of as a replacement pet, and thats not the case. But things would be to lonely here at the house, and I loved having Sophie keep me company here, especially when i waste my life here at the computer, she would always keep me company, just sitting on my lap, keeping me warm. Which is why I will eventually want to get another pet, just not entirely sure what kind I want yet.

So I pose you with this question, what kind of pet should i get? What's your personal favorite, and why do you think I should get that one. Just curious is all.

Thanks for the input!

Here is an older picture of Sophie for anyone that is interested. This is a picture of her when she was about 8 years old, that is my bird Baby in the background, who is no longer with us.

I have a miniature Poodle....and I love him dearly. He's like a family member. Infact we just returned from Michigan today back to Toronto back here. A nice 4hr road trip with him too. Went shopping in the Prime Outlet mall for 2 days. I personally prefer dogs over cats...but thats purely a personal thing. Whatever suits you, I guess thats what you should go for.

The one and only major downside IMO to having a pet is ofcourse....when they pass away...the feeling is just unbarable. I know how you feel though. ;)

im not the biggest animal person, but i got a winter white hamster that i really love. hes really small and adorable. its fun to get up in the morning, boot up the computer which wakes him up, and then sit there feeding him(he likes to be hand fed sometimes). Then you can hold him or put him in his ball to run around. Not a big mess and easy to love. Only problem is they don't live as long as a cat or a dog. I don't know what I'm gonna do when he dies ;)

Well, I'll tell you a little story.

My aunt has had small birds (mainly canaries) for about 50 years.

She was particularly fond of the last but one, also because it was her little companion after her husband died, and it lived for 11 years, which is plenty for a canary.

When the canary died, she said she never wanted another one again.

A couple of years later her attitude seemed to have changed: occasionally she talked as if she wanted a new one.

To cut a long story short, one day I bought one from a local shop and I give it to her.

At first she was a bit hostile, but slowly she grew fond of the new one. Nowadays she hardly ever talks of the previous one.

What do I mean? Give yourself the necessary time to "grieve". When you feel ready, buy a little kitten.

It won't have the same personality as Sophie, but I am sure you'll be happy to make friends with a new, different living being.

I have a cat and a dog, but I just love felines, for me cats are special beings...

Cats have more "personality". Besides a cat will see its owner as its "mother".

A dog won't really see you as a friend. You must be its "boss".

Actually, it depends on the dog. My mother has a dog that seems to have a 'mama' complex - following her around the house and going crazy when she's out of the house. It's a little annoying, to be honest, but it's definately not a 'boss' relationship.

Of course there are exceptions. But generally speaking dogs (like wolves, their close relatives) have a pack instinct. Their human owner is (or should be) their "pack leader":

Well we took Sophie in today. Everyone was pretty upset, but we had Sophie wrapped up in her favorite blanket and held her till she fell asleep, then we had the vet take care of her from there. We feel a lot better now because she went to sleep with such a relaxed and relieved expression on her face. It's the happiest that we have seen her in such a long time.

Thanks again for all your input guys, we still aren't sure if/when we will get a new pet, but I'll definatelly take what you all say into consideration.

It's good that things worked out that way. Im glad Sophie felt at ease :D . I guess this is a bit late but I currently have a black cat named Wilbur and hes the best. I wouldnt say hes me favorite, because I've had previous animals who were great too. I really think Alessandro17 hit the nail on the head:

If you are looking into a dog, I'd suggest a jack russel terrier. Ive had one for a month and she truly is the perfect pet. Playful when i want to be, but very relaxed and loving. They also tend to be very smart and are great with kids. But I think in your case youre more accostomed to having a cat, so its realy youre choice.
