hardboiledwonderland
What's the point of having the slick and attractive OS X installed on your machine if its anchored to your desk where nobody will see it? Imagine the looks on the faces of the Powerbook-toting Starbucks crowd when you whip out an OSx86 'PC' notebook. So, what do you guys think is the best/cheapest laptop for running OSx86? We all know that Intel chipsets seem to work better, but the only mobile chips with SSE3 support are the AMD Turion ones. Of course that might not be an issue with Maxxuss's patch. Besides, for serious 'workstation' use, do you really want to use OS X? I don't... Bodnar
Well, If you get a AMD 64 laptop, you could put one of hte new semprons in there. I got a Ferrari 3200, which has a 2800+ in it. Right now i'm looking at just getting the semp 3400+, since it'll fit in here, the heat will stay more or less in the same ball park, uses less power from what i saw, performs around that of a full 3000 - 3200, plus see3 I'm trying to get any confirming on how much of the ferrari is actually supported. I've been reading that the lan and audio work (or should), but haven't heard anything about the bluetooth/USB. dano272
I have the Deadmoo image running on my Dell 700M. I have 512MB of memory and it's running very nice - even with the Maxxus SSE2 hack. Boots up in less than 30 seconds. Things that work great - 1280x800 widescreen resolution, onboard nic, and sound. Things that don't work - on board wireless. I haven't plugged in anything to the USB or firewire - so I can't comment on those. But all in all - OSX on the 700m works great - plus it's nice and small. hardboiledwonderland
Wow, Dano, that sounds very nice indeed. Too bad though about the wireless since (for me and many people) that is so incredibly key to laptop operation. Is there anyone who has gotten their wireless to work in OSx86? Particularly in a laptop, but also on a desktop I guess. Here's an idea: can you stick a standard Airport card into a PCMCIA slot? That'd be great (provided you could hook up the antenna)! mattdh
I own the Z71A and OSX runs awesome . Got Rosetta working last night. Only things that don't work is video is not accelerated yet and the network card doesn't work. I was running Itunes last night and could not get it to crash. Now, neither machine is any significantly slower than the D800 under Linux or Windows. My only guess here is that power management/speed step is running them slow. I can use the power button on the D-800 to power down (brings up the window asking if you want to shut down, restart, sleep, etc, just like on a Mac), but can't on either Thinkpad. dano272
Here - briefly - is how I got my video to 1280x800. This is for my Dell 700m - I can't comment on any other set up. I downloaded a kext file from the concretesurf forums. You need to look for the AppleIntelIntegratedGraphics.kext file. The kext file contains a file inside called info.plist. The ID number in the text file (on line 34 right after the IOPCIMatch bit) was changed to match the ID number of the Dell 700M onboard video card. That ID can be found by clicking on the apple logo and then on About This Mac. Then click on more info and then on the graphics section. The ID number is simply listed as ID. For the 700m's video - the number was 0x3582. For the info.plist - you need to append 8086 to it to make 0x35828086. This kext was then placed into the /system/library/extensions directory. To get mine to work - I had to chmod -R 755 and chown -R wheel:owner the file. Reboot and viola - 1280x800. I gleaned all of this info on these forums. Good luck. esquilo22
The file maxxuss-sseto2-allinclusive-v0.2.zip is not for the 1280x800 stuff. It seems that Apple is closing every site with information for running OSX86. Concretesurf is down just like many others. There is a torrent for the above file. cyrana
Concretesurf is down due to using too much bandwidth... If you check the Software forum here you can find links to download the inclusive patches, too. And, my Compaq NC6000 works just fine (aside from wireless). No QE or anything but I can run my Mobility 9600 at 1400x1500x32 (VESA of course). Sound, USB and all that function, as well as on-board ethernet. I recommend deleting all the ATI kexts, though. Tuxedo Jack
My Dell Latitude D600 boots quite nicely and quickly - and it's only got 256MB of RAM to boot. It's to the desktop in under 30 seconds, and that's with the login prompt included. Now if there was some way to use the whole 18GB drive as HFS+ instead of just a 6GB HFS+ drive and a 12GB FAT32 drive, I'd be in heaven. The only thing that doesn't work on it is the built-in wireless. Just get some OS X supported card instead. Its PCMCIA type II slot can take most of them. Oh, and it's confusing to use Alt for Command, Windows for Option, and Control for... well, control. But you get used to it soon enough. cyrana
No PCMCIA wireless cards are known to work as an FYI. I do notice during bootup that there are some cardbus initialization problems (yenta one) in my case. I bet it is the case for many currently. Once they get that part fixed, cards like the Linksys WPC54G or an Airport card are your best bets (since the use the same chipset). Only time will tell.
