Yesterday I got an email from an online shop where I have bought some hardware, offering me the various versions of Vista.

I was absolutely astonished by the price of Vista Ultimate:

That is on special offer!

It is 673.525 USD!!!

I dont understand why they're charging so much for Ultimate, or any other versions for that matter. Its getting past the greed point.

:red_indian: That site is a joke

Why? I am dual booting OS X and OpenSUSE these days.

OpenSUSE has almost everything I need.

Smart stats:

Installed Packages: 1184

Total Packages: 8253

Total Provides: 31910

Total Requires: 6613

Total Upgrades: 9465

Total Conflicts: 1601

Note that total packages: 8253

Ya so what, so am I. I still think that site wont go anywhere and I'm still gonna run Vista for free :)

Well, I suppose I could replace that site with Distrowatch...

As to running Vista for free, that is another matter.

Novell will start raising prices in future builds now that M$ has their hooks in them.

OpenSUSE costs nothing. I suppose it is going to stay that way.

You can buy copies and have install and tech support if you're a n00b.

Yes I know. There was a time when buying SUSE was the only option (or a FTP download)

If you want the 8 Gig DVD you can download it from here:

Ultimate doesnt cost 675.

It cost like 400 for a full retail install, they have an upgrade for 260, and an OEM for 200. So i guess the retailer was misled

That retailer sells Vista Ultimate for 517,24 €

Translated in dollars that is 673.52 USD (approximately)

And no, they are not mistaken: the official price is even more.

I suppose one could get an English copy for less, but the vast majority of Italians don't understand foreign languages.

You're getting ripped off there, I buy a load of stuff of ebuyer.com since I live in the UK and I bought an OEM copy for £112.99 (222.28 USD). :P

OEM is for hardware builders so you'll need to buy a piece of hardware with it.

I suppose the OEM version is cheaper here too. But OEMs have some further limitations, if I remember correctly.
