I like both the G4 and G5 Mini platforms.  To be honest, I don't think the G6 Mini is a good value compared to what you get with the G4 and G5 Minis.  I don't think Intel was making significant advances from 8th to 9th to 10th gen CPUs and the HP PL1/PL2 power limits in BIOS are overly restrictive (my opinion) after the G4 Mini.  I have not personally tested the G6 Mini, but I have thoroughly tested the G4 and G5 Minis and they are excellent for their tiny form-factor.  If you are still considering the purchase of a tiny platform with 10th gen Intel CPU, this thread by @rafale77 may also interest you.  If you want a G4 or G5 Mini with Radeon Graphics, this thread may interest you.  My G4 Mini with RX 560x is my favorite new hack.

I ordered an elite desk 800 g4 mini and ended up receiving a hp prodesk 600 g4 mini, however Last night I got to install sonoma 14.6 using the efi from this thread, had to do secureboot disabled after reading your notes on needing to do so for the install to finish then reverted back to the default, right now everything seems to be working, I swapped out the intel wifi that came with it and placed in AX210 NGW using the AirportItlwm.kext and the speeds are pretty decent enough.

My only letdown is the i/o module i bought for the rear panel type-c seems to not work, as my system doesn't power on properly when it's inserted. Will be looking into it later tonight.

I have attached a new EFI to Post #1.  This new EFI is based on Open Core 1.0.1 and includes the changes below.  In the OC config.plist, Misc > Security > SecureBootModel needs to be changed to Disabled to install / upgrade Sonoma and Sequoia.

OC 1.0.1 EFI R001

  • EFI/BOOT: Update BOOTx64.efi
  • EFI/OC: Update OpenCore.efi
  • EFI/OC/Drivers: Update OpenRuntime.efi, AudioDxe.efi, ResetNvramEntry.efi
  • EFI/OC/Kexts:
    • Upgrade AppleALC.kext from 1.9.0 -> 1.9.1
    • Upgrade Lilu.kext from 1.6.7 -> 1.6.8
    • Upgrade RestrictEvents.kext from 1.1.3 -> 1.1.4
    • Upgrade VirtualSMC.kext from 1.3.2 -> 1.3.3
    • Upgrade WhateverGreen.kext from 1.6.6 -> 1.6.7
  • EFI/OC/config.plist
    • ACPI > Add: Remove DMAR
    • ACPI > Delete: Remove DMAR
    • ACPI > Patch:
      • Add Base, Count, OemTableId and/or TableSignature as needed to restrict ACPI patches
      • TPM._STA: reduce Find/Replace length to minimum necessary
      •  _PTS: Add byte to Find/Replace length to fix incorrect ACPI patch in DSDT
  • EFI/OC/Tools: Update tools
  • EFI/OC/ACPI: Remove DMAR

I'd like to take a vote on SecureBootModel for future EFIs.  If you would prefer to have SecureBootModel=Disabled, give this post a "Like" emoji.  If you would prefer to keep SecureBootModel=j174, give this post a "Laugh" emoji.  Please don't clutter this thread with comments or replies about SecureBootModel.  If this post gets enough participation (more than 5 reactions) and it gets more "Likes" than "Laughs," I'll change SecureBootModel in future EFIs.  Thank you.

Vote

  • If you prefer future EFIs to be posted with SecureBootModel=Disabled, "Like" this post
  • If you prefer future EFIs to be posted with SecureBootModel=j174, "Laugh" this post

EDIT: If this post does not get enough voter participation (more than 5 reactions), I'll leave SecureBootModel unchanged (SecureBootModel=j174) in future EFIs.

Has anyone used the Wi-Fi m.2 2230 slot in our EliteDesk 800 G4 / G5 Mini for an SSD?  If so, how's the performance and what SSD did you use?  Pinging @datafeedexpert.

EDIT: Here's a thread that claims that our Wi-Fi 2230 slot supports a SSD.  I'll wait for someone else to test this and report their findings.

EDIT2: I no longer need this Wi-Fi 2230 solution.  I developed a solution for installing a 2230 NVMe SSD in the second m.2 slot of our Minis here.

Not sure if it was this post or another post but somebody mentioned that if you want a more powerful mini PC, you should look at the Lenovo mini PC with AMD graphics.

Does anyone remember which model was that?

Thank you.

Awesome, thank you

@datafeedexpert I saw that you have a M720Q, I just got one and just ordered a WX4100 for it, have you tried upgrading yours with a video card?

This is the thread that I referred to.  If I were building a 10th gen Intel Mini PC, this would be the one.

EDIT: I'm biased now after creating and maintaining the macOS solutions and thoroughly enjoying them, but I think that these two hacks are the best value:

The HP EliteDesk 800 G4 and G5 Mini platforms are very well made, fully supported by Windows 11 (because they are 8th and 9th Gen Intel) and run macOS extremely well.

Thank you, I just put together a M720Q with the WX 4100 graphics, if you wait it out you can get the M720Q for about $50 and the WX 4100 is about $50 as well, so for about $100 you have a pretty good tiny PC that runs macOS pretty well.

The P330/P340 is out of my price range.

Has anyone tried the HP Elitedesk 705 G4 with the 2400GE and the RX560X graphics, it has the same port for the graphics as the 800 G4/G5?

@robi39 Very happy about your new hack.  Congratulations.  This thread is dedicated to the HP EliteDesk 800 G4 and G5 Mini.  It would be best for you post questions about other platforms in the appropriate thread.  If the appropriate thread for those platforms does not exist, feel free to create one.  To help others, you could post details about your new hacks in those appropriate threads.

I don't see any compelling reasons to upgrade to Open Core 1.0.2 from 1.0.1, so if you're happy with your hack, you can leave it alone.  For those who want to upgrade to OC 1.0.2, the EFI changes are below. for the EFI attached to Post #1 are below.  As of the writing of this post, the EFI attached to Post #1 is still based on OC 1.0.1 without any of the updates below.  The Open Core EFI attached to Post #1 has been updated with the changes below.

Upgrading to Open Core 1.0.2

  • Upgrade BOOT/BOOTx64.efi
  • Upgrade OC/OpenCore.efi
  • Upgrade OC/Drivers/*.* (except HfsPlus.efi)
  • Upgrade OC/Tools/*.*
  • Upgrade OC/Kexts
    • AppleALC.kext 1.9.1 -> 1.9.2
    • Lilu.kext 1.6.8 -> 1.6.9
    • RestrictEvents.kext 1.1.4 -> 1.1.5
    • VirtualSMC.kext 1.3.3 -> 1.3.4
      •  SMCProcessor.kext 1.3.3 -> 1.3.4
      •  SMCSuperIO.kext 1.3.3 -> 1.3.4
    • WhateverGreen.kext 1.6.7 -> 1.6.8
  • OC/config.plist
    • Add UEFI > Unload
    • Change Misc > Security > SecureBootModel: Disabled

There have been several questions about installing a 9th Gen Intel CPU on an EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini motherboard.  See this.

I am currently running macOS Monterey (12.7.6), which has reached the end of its life.

Do I need to update Open Core before upgrading the major macOS version?

If so, what is the procedure for upgrading Open Core. I haven't touched Open Core since installing Monterey.

Thanks!

@kiwi7910 You should upgrade Open Core.  My latest posted EFI will boot Monterey through Sequoia, so you can upgrade your EFI first, confirm that it works with your current Monterey installation, and then upgrade macOS.

It sounds like you have a lot to learn, so this will be a fun learning experience for you.  Test your new EFI on a USB thumbdrive before modifying the EFI on your SSD.

I have upgraded the Open Core version from 0.8.0 to 1.0.2.

If I upgrade the MacOS (using the MacOS System Preferences/Software Update) from Monterey to Sequoia, do I still have to disable SecureBootModel, or is that only necessary when doing a fresh install?

AFAIK, as long as it's not a fresh install (disabling secureboot is moot there), the secure boot option needs to be disabled to take any updates/upgrades.

I used the OC 1.0.2. download zip as is, and it has SecureBootModel = False in config.plist. The only thing I changed was to set HideAuxiliary to False, so that I the option to reset the NVRAM was visible at startup.

All good so far. Thanks!

Acidanthera Devs updated NVMeFix.kext here for Sequoia.  I haven't yet uploaded an OC 1.0.3 EFI for this hack, so you can update your own EFI by upgrading NVMeFix.kext from 1.1.1 -> 1.1.2.

I have uploaded a new OC 1.0.3 EFI for my EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini with Radeon RX 560x here with the changes listed here.  You can review my EFI in the other thread for hints, but I did not intend it to be used for this HackMini (without Radeon RX 560x).

I have updated the EFI attached to Post #1 with OC 1.0.3 and the updated Acidanthera kexts.  The EFI changes from my previous OC 1.0.2 EFI are as follows:

Changes from OC 1.0.2 EFI -> OC 1.0.3 EFI

  • Upgrade BOOT/BOOTx64.efi
  • Upgrade OC/OpenCore.efi
  • Upgrade OC/Drivers/*.* (except HfsPlus.efi)
  • Upgrade OC/Tools/*.*
  • Upgrade OC/Kexts
    • AppleALC.kext 1.9.2 -> 1.9.3
    • IntelMausi.kext 1.0.7 -> 1.0.8
    • Lilu.kext 1.6.9 -> 1.7.0
    • NVMeFix.kext 1.1.1 -> 1.1.2
    • WhateverGreen.kext 1.6.8 -> 1.6.9
  • OC/config.plist
    • No changes

My currently posted OpenCore EFI (attached to Post #1) does not enable Kernel > Quirks > ThirdPartyDrives in config.plist.  This quirk is typically required to enable TRIM on non-Apple SATA SSDs and does not affect NVMe SSDs.  Since enabling this quirk is recommended for SATA SSDs and does not affect systems that don't have SATA drives, I will be enabling this quirk in future posted EFIs.

From the Open Core documentation for Kernel > Quirks > ThirdPartyDrives:

Description: Apply vendor patches to IOAHCIBlockStorage.kext to enable native features for third-party drives, such as TRIM on SSDs or hibernation support on 10.15 and newer.

Change Kernel > Quirks > ThirdPartyDrives to Yes / True

@deeveedee Just build yesterday a G5 with the latest Sequoia, cannot thank you enough for the excellent work. Trying to be back to mac and convince myself to buy a mini M4.

Does anyone use this one with a 4k monitor? How his the graphic performance? (I did all the setup on a FullHD monitor and it was pretty good)

@Joao Santos Glad this solution is working for you!  I don't remember exactly where, but your question has been asked in this thread and elsewhere, so a search might uncover answers.  Here are a couple of things that I found:

+1 to deeveedee's answer

But also, yes I have "tried to" use it with 4k60 monitor (the non-AMD RX560 version with Intel iGPU only) and at least for me it doesn't cut it with stutters, janks just for normal desktop with 3-4 windows and all transparencies and other effects turned off. At least my personal experience has been to go with the dGPU version if you want 4k60. You may be ok with 4k30 (I don't know...).
