imPaTT
I love and adore everything about apple. All that I fidn wrong about apple, is that they charge way too much for thier computers, all though, if you want a good custom built pc you do have to pay ABT 2000$ CND for it... but anyways. Today, my dad recieved his credit card bill, and Apple Online Store was charging me 51.22$ for somthing me nor my father had purchased. They did however credit 37.99 for the replacement earbuds I ordered since the ones i got with my ipod were broken. Anyways in on the phone with them now and i've been on hold for soo long now... lol Just all of that to say that ièm dissapointed with apple, and hope fully, i wont have to pay that... and maybe they could send me somthing for my troubles lol (like that will ever happen!) I'll tell you the outcome! What about you guys has anything like that ever happend to any of you?
milesce
I think generally you get what you pay for. I've bought Dell laptops that were similarly configured to Apple and paid roughly the same price (though I love Dell's accidental damage coverage, and that's why we bought a Dell for my son rather than a mac). On the other hand, I've bought supposedly high-end Toshiba laptops, and my most recent spent nearly 30% of the time I owned it at the repair depot. It took 2 years, disputing the charges with my credit card company, then a complaint to the better business bureau, before they finally replaced it. By that time I'd bought a new macbook pro. The one time my MBP needed repair, one of the fans broke. I dropped it off at the Apple store in Durham, NC, and started to drive home, but stopped in the bookstore first. Before I left the bookstore, they called me -- repairs were complete. So no, I've got no complaints.
kevin_4e
I think it's true you get what you pay for but that's not true for all of their Apple products, including stuff such as their mice. Is the wireless mighty mouse really $70? When it comes to and at Apple, they are great when they actually do repair. When I needed my MacBook fixed, an Apple technician was telling me I need a new heatsink AND a new logic board. They explain they will only do the heatsink so I handed it over at that point. It was repaired in a day and all seemed fine. Since then, I've been to the store trying to get a repair for a reccuring problem they claim is a software issue. So they just keep re-installing but the problem keeps coming. I'm experiencing a lot of the previous problems when I asked for a new logic board and I strongly feel that's what's need to be fixed. What I feel is overcharged is their AppleCare. I feel as an AppleCare member you should get the same benefits as a ProCare member by being able to make repair meeting deals at the genius bar ahead of time. Instead I have to stay up 'til midnight and make an appointment then.
bofors
... Apple Online Store was charging me 51.22$ for somthing me nor my father had purchased... This is surely some mistake, Apple would not try to steal from you like this. What I feel is overcharged is their AppleCare... Ditto, AppleCare is a rip (and so is Apple's standard one year warranty). When my AppleCare contract on my PowerBook was about to expire last year, I took my PowerBook into my local independent Apple dealer (who I am friendly with and try to support) for a minor repair. The bottom of the PowerBook shell was a little loose in one corner (barely even noticable), apparently some epoxy which holds it on there had failed. This should have been a 15 minute job, which is what it took me to fix it myself. But Apple claimed (without even looking at my almost spotless PowerBook) that this was "abuse" and not covered under AppleCare. My dealer told me that if I protested, Apple would fix it for free, but that it would have to be sent in. Others things you have to watch for with Apple is their "dead pixel" policy on displays, BS "restocking" fees and outrageous RAM prices. On the other hand, when I ordered my refurbished PowerMac two years ago, I got an additional $100 off the "special" price for no particular reason and it came with extra RAM, a larger hard drive and a better graphics card than I had ordered (some $250 worth of options) for free. sandmanfvrga
They do overcharge and I do wish the government could some how come in a slap them with a fine for overcharging PC hardware. I really do but I know if won't happen. (No flaming me on that). Apple is great and if they would lower their prices and put there stuff in walmarts (the mac minis and such) they would take off. Alas, Jobs is an idiot and wants it HIS way. Maybe he needs to work for burger king. heh.
non sequitur
Selling it in wal mart would make it look cheaper. what kind of pcs can you get there anyeways? im telling you, anyone that actually wants a computer instead of a crappy beige box 2 year old machine will go to best buy or circuit city, etc. i dont see how hard it is to go to an apple store(which are amazingly sexy) or online to their site(which is beautifully designed)

I've bought Dell laptops that were similarly configured to Apple and paid roughly the same price (though I love Dell's accidental damage coverage, and that's why we bought a Dell for my son rather than a mac). this is just not true. Dell often have deals which shave hundreds of dollars off their laptops. Recently I configured an E1505 with Core 2 Duo 2ghz, 2gigs RAM, 120gig HD, DVD burner, 1400x900 (or whatever the res is) 15" screen, ATI X1400 video card, and it was going to cost me $990. I hardly see how a $1099 Macbook even compares to those specs. Sure the Macbook comes with an iSight, and the firewire port can power bus-powered devices, but thats just a huge spec difference for the price. In the end, I didn't buy the Dell just cos I'd much rather be running OSX without hassles and be able to update to Leopard. I will most likely buy a Macbook when Leopard comes out. Sure I'll be getting slightly less powerful hardware, but I guess thats the price for quality software and design (and don't forget that you probably won't be speaking to someone in India for tech support). INFNITE
and Ferrari overcharges for their cars....come on, stop bitching. The prices for Mac's is already much more reasonable than what it used to be. You used to have to spend $3000+ to get a reasonably spec'd PowerBook

Prasys
Now , it depends how you define overpriced Lets take a look at a Dell Inspirion 6400 notebook vs MacBook Certainly , the Dell has Core 2 Duo processor , 1GB of RAM , X1400/X1300 , blah blah blah and the MacBook has Core 2 Duo processor , .5GB RAM , GMA 950 , blah blah blah with extras Take a look at the software side , it comes with iLife , MacOS X and other cool stuff. Could you Dell or any other cheap PC has that kind of software out of the box. Its still unbeatable , iLife suite still rocks. So for me , well umm yeah it has its own advantages. Support wise , I am not too sure , but its getting cheaper and cheaper Last time [2 years back] iBook G4 - 256MB RAM - no Airport - $999 or 1099 now - MB - Core 2 Duo - 512MB of RAM - $1099 [With Tiger , wireless and iSight]

Walmart isn't much different than Target, which sells higher end stuff than Walmart, and Circuit City isn't that great. Walmart sells some high end stuff. You can go there, get Blue Ray DVD PLayers, HD DVD Players, HD LCD tvs, VD recorders, iPods and many other mp3 players, Xbox 360, PS3 (when they have it), among other things. They have got nice laptops there and their machines are not to shabby. Some are REALLY low end, but so what? Most of the machines there are around a Mac Mini's price so putting it in a nice display like some walmarts do with the iPods, you can market the Mac Mini. Have it on display, on shelves in different flavors or if you want more customization, you can order from Apple. Makes sense. INFNITE, please have a better reply than "Get over it". macmaniac
Canadian prices (both configured with combo optical drives) as of today, online at dell.ca and apple.ca Mac Pro Two 2.66 dual core Xeon 2G RAM 250G HD 256MB nVidia7300 $3158 Dell Precision 690 Two 2.66 dual core Xeon 2G RAM 250G HD 128MB nVidiQuadroNVS $3758 A 32 bit Dell Precision 490 with same specs came to $3538. Is Apple overcharging? Please correct me if I'm wrong.... I suppose Dell offers "special discounts" and online coupons, etc, but I'd saythat Apple is in the ballpark. Suzuka
I don't think they're too overpriced, the RAM upgrades are a bit pricey, but not enough to go cry about it, maybe its high quality
sandmanfvrga
macmaniac, I agree the Mac Pro is FAIRLY priced, but build/configure a laptop with similar specs and you will see a BIG difference. Plus, Apple reselling old PowerPC stuff as high as they do, rediculous. The Mini's with the Core Duo finally were worth the money, but the $599 core solo was a joke. Apple keeps upgrading and after a while, things get ok for the price, there is a $999 iMac after so long, but there are still overpricing.
Big Kahuna
it's like buying a higher quality car. resale value. you can sell an ibook or powerbook now and still give a pretty penny for it...from apple refurb, ebay, craigslist, or wherever you look. apple's resale value is something to consider as well. non sequitur
yeah, they do have a few high end machines, but i have never seen any in the wal marts around here. also, even if they do sell the stuff, its not the most glorious arrangement, if you know what i mean. most people would rather go somewhere else than wal mart who kind of specialize in computers if they wanted a high end pc. katmail
Apples cheaper than Dells? It may come as a surprise that Macs occasionally offer a price advantage over PCs. A price comparison between a Dell XPS M1710 and a 17-inch MacBook Pro showed the Dell's final price at $3,222 while the Mac clocked in at $2,699. WhiteStar
I've been buying laptops for 7 years now and desktops for much much longer. I started with Micron who made the best machines I ever used. Then I moved to Dell. Things were great with Dell until 2 years ago when they went to hell without passing go or collecting $200, in both hardware and customer service. Then I switched to HP and they are pretty good machines. To make a long story short, because of my business, I usually buy a new laptop every 15 months or so. 3 weeks ago I was shopping around and decided to get a MBP now that Macs can run Windows. I've heard so much about Apple doing no wrong that I decided to go for it. Needless to say, so far, I think Apple's hardware is good and bad. The internals are good, but the externals are so so at best, meaning the machine is glued together in a flimsy way. And the speakers, oh the speakers, please don't get me started. I'm appalled at the quality of those speakers. Also, only 2 USB port? Give me a break! Anyway, now for the price. I bought the 15" MBP C2D 2.33 Ghz, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB HD, 256 MB ATI X1600, Super drive. Total: $2650.00 including Tax. Dell and HP COULDN’T EVEN COME CLOSE to this price for the same configuration. I get regular discounts from Dell and the last coupon I got from them was $600 off, plus $300 off on the web. That's the only way to get a comparable machine from Dell. With HP, forget the Pavilion, you have to go with the Compaq line and I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. So, needless to say, I am totally shocked by Apple's pricing. I always believed they were so much more expensive, but I guess it's true, don't believe everything you hear.
