Aw, come on, we all wants a complete home entertainment system on something the size of a thimble. The PS3 is a start. I want one to run Linux on; heck, you can even skin Linux to resemble OS X, though XP skins more convinvingly. Seriously, the older you are, the more PC boxes you tend to have accumlated. I bought and Macified a laptop as a step to saying cheerio to the lot but, you know, it would be great to just have one box do everything, right? Preferably it sits on your wris and has a camera on it so you can show your girlfriend that the secretary who you are lunching with isn't hot. ;)

Any word on this? Another message board (I forget which) mentions that OSX has been successfully installed on a PS3, but doesn't provide any usefull info (LINKS!)

I just want to be able to have GUI access to my iTunes library (yes, iTunes, DRM, blah blah blah) on my television. I know you're going to say appleTV, but I've already got a PS3 and like the idea of not having to put ANOTHER box by my tv.

Since I am a programming retard, Mac on Linux looks promising, just need the nvidia support, I think.

MOL looks promising, yes, however the devs do NOT have access to a PPC64 system for development.

That being the case, there is ZERO G5 or Cell support at the moment.

It is one of those things that people have been working on it based on the Spec, however have not yet had a chance to test their code in a real-world enviroment, which is one of those "essencial" things prior to releasing something.

It is definitely the project that I see with the most hope, though.

Note, no builds of OS X have been reported working on the PS3.

Um... wow.

Okay Naugahyde, lets do a quick recap...

PPC systems do not have Rosetta to let them run Intel-Only code.

Backrow (AppleTV's Frontrow 2.0 Application) is Intel-Only.

The only way it could be made to run is through the use of Qemu, so all emulation resulting in substantially crappy performance. By substantially crappy, have fun trying to watch a video on it.

When Leopard includes Frontrow 2.0, then it should be relatively easy to run it on a PS3, assuming that we get a bootloader to work beforehand.

If someone got it up and running, let's put it this way, how many pages do you suppose the thread would run to? A couple of hundred? Are you kidding me it would be huge. I don't know anyone out there who doesn't want to see an all-in-one home entertainment system. That they would like it to be the size of an iPod is another matter all togther! Putting XP on an XBox, for instance, was not a minorithy sport and the number of people who tried to hack the 360 to run any kind of operating systme is not insignificant. But hey, Linux on the PS3 may be enough. In a couple of years Linux will overtake both Vista and OS X. Useless for games though. Hey, wait a minute, doesn't the PS3 allow you to play games?! Personally I would love to throw out some of my computers and have just one. Can't play games on a Mac Mini, pretty crummy on a laptop.

The "gaming" issue at the moment is because 3D Accelerated drivers have yet to be written, and Sony did not feel like writing those ones for the "community".

As people already have some 3D Accelerated Nvidia open source drivers, it could only be a matter of time until they are ported over to the PowerPC Architecture and made to work with the RSX chip.

Note that by a matter of time, I am not saying any day now... I am saying that it MAY be possible with some rewrites but only after some devs find it worthy of their time to go out, buy a PS3, turn it into a computer and make it into their main project for a few months.

Think about how long it is taking for there to be Wireless Networking drivers for PS3 Linux...

That is one of those "small" things.

Has anyone tried Mac-On-Linux with PPC Linux on a PS3?

http://mac-on-linux.sourceforge.net

It should work, as the whole point of the original project was to run OSX through the processor on a PPC board... I would try it, but I really can't go out and get a PS3, as I'm in some bad weather.

It should work "IF" MOL actually supported PPC64.

At the moment, it doesn't though.

From what I have found, the lead developer does not actually have access to a PPC64 system (G5 or PS3), making the development a little "difficult" to say the least.

Latest news is that they may be getting a PPC64 system, however the development team has not posted any info on that since the 27th of last month.

I catagorically refuse to pretend not to be excited! And you can quote me on that!

ok, so i might be taking a step backwards here but what about pearpc on ydl 5.0? Has anyone tried it at all? I compiled everything yesterday and got pearpc to boot and then the apple logo came up and then it went black and now the shell is just processing "[cpu/exc] 0ffff8a48: type = 00000f20 (00000000, 00000000) and the pearpc window keeps saying wierd things that im not sure if they mean anything. I know that pearpc runs something like 500 times slower than a real mac but i would love to see if it was possible. The shell has been processing the above code for about 14hrs now with nothing exciting happening....anyone able to help?

hey guys,

i am just thinking about getting a ps3, but i would like to use the power of the cell processor to get osx working on it to have a nice fast and cheap mac system.

so will there ever be a chance to get in hands of a ps3-osx-copy??

or will you make all the people wait until ps4 and 10.6??

;-)

Does anyone know of a forum where we can actually discuss darwin on PS3 without having the thread filled out with junk? Sometimes I wonder if MS hires people to bash the PS3...
I'm sure there are a handful of people on the MS payroll that go around bashing the competition, but the majority of the idiots we're dealing with are FANBOYS!!!Look, I am still working on OSX for multiple platforms. Right now my main focus is the PS3 because of it's PPC architecture and the fact that the cell band processor's cores can be used to function like ram. So, yes, the PS3 may only have 256mb ram (literally), but technically those rules don't necessarily apply here because individual cores can be utilized like ram. I am also working on OSX for the xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. It is more likely to work with the PS3 because there is less security to got through than the others. However, the xbox 360 has a PPC processor prior to the systems release the dev kits and demo kits were all G5 towers; that's a fact. It is also possible to run OSX on the Wii because of the obvious reason that the Wii OS, like both other next gen consoles, is Linux like Darwin. Oh, and to all you {censored}s that might say it's even more pointless to run OSX on the Wii than anything are just that, {censored}s. Hey man, if the iPhone can ran OSX and multiple third party applications at once why can't we get the Wii to do that? And if you disagree, you obviously know nothing about the iPhone or how Linux can be broken down to utilize specific hardware schemes. I do appreciate all of the positive insight and attempts at helping this project, but all of you haters are nothing more than hating fanboy internet nerds with no lives and nothing better to do, but aimlessly crawl around the internet like the rats you are looking for something to point your fingers at. To all of the useless people out there, and on behalf of everyone who wants such innovation to work; We all hate you useless retards and unless you can help us find a solution or at least give positive insight, go f*ck yourselves!! I'm sure all of you haters wanted a project supporter like myself to reply to all of your stupid rants, but people like us, with lives and {censored} to do, don't generally waist our time with fools such as yourselves. :happymac:Peace yall and may the innovative people rise to the top. :gun: Oh, and P.S.I have 5 PC towers (two AMD x2s), a Power Mac G5 Quad, a PowerBook G4, and a HP laptop. Not to mention I've been working on Linux on all of these machines and then some for over ten years. Well, excluding the machines that weren't out ten years ago, but that's not my point. My point is to show how long I have been using and hacking Linux on multiple platforms. And as far as Windows is concerned I've been using Windows and MAC Operating Systems since both companies were created. So, to the innovation haters, eat me and don't get too mad if active community people don't want to waist there time responding to your rants.
-_- I seriously think Apple should have gone for Cell rather than IntelBut I'm a PowerPC fanboy....
I partially agree with you. As far as performance is concerned they should have, but apple has bigger fish to fry and that fish is Windows. They went Intel so that they could show people, literally, how much Windows sucks. They wanted to give consumers the choice on purpose so that people would realize what's really up and Apple would end up on top. In case you don't fallow the business world and market trends, there have been a record amount of people switching platforms since the Intel Macs came to life. On top of that, the majority of the new users that utilized the Windows option have since left Windows behind and never use it; and if you don't believe me check the WallStreet Journal Archives. Though, I do believe that once Apple feels they have stolen enough of Microsoft's Windows users they will go back to IBM for their CPU needs.

I can't believe I read the whole thread. Seems to me the original idea would have much to gain from... Oh, I don't know... progress. There is a single post aways back of a video of IBM at a trade show running OS X on a cell machine. If no progress can be made by brute force (i.e. posting links and screaming "get 'er done!") then perhaps tracking down the IBM employees and their cell machine would be enlightening... specifically finding out how they did it and what the differences between that machine and a PS3 are.
