I've been following the PS3 since E3 05, and it seems awsome. I keep reading that the PS3 can support operating systems, like osx. what do you think about this? Since the PS3 has 7 something cores, it should be pretty darn powerful. I doubt Apple will let users install OSX so the hacker community has to come up with something new, I guess. Or do u think osx86 will run?

sorry if this is in the wrong forum :/

I very much doubt it will ever run OSX legitimately, unless Sony has been doing some *serious* back-room deals..

I think the so called quote was just an example that you could potentially run "other" operating systems, not just Linux and the main PS3 OS, *if* anyone bothered to write anything..

Well... i highly doubt OSX will ever run on the PS3 simply due to the fact that OSX only runs on x86 and ppc.... not cell (the cpu that the ps3 uses.) To even get osx to run it must be emulated (it would still lag and suck on the ps3)... or would require porting from apple (that would only happen if sony made a major deal... which is highly unlikely.)

Yea, that's what I thought too. But the site says the Cell is based of the PowerPC o.O

Sony's Cell processor is a derivative of IBM's PowerPC chip used by Apple in its personal computers.

Well, there are cores, and then there's all the other stuff that makes a computer fast. Like FSB, on die cache (L1, L2, L3 [for you Intel folks]), north bridge & south bridge speed, memory controller speed, etc. So what makes for a good gaming console may not make for a good desktop computing device. Or what makes for a good computing device for one type of computing task may not work for the type of task you do (SGI workstations, Sun boxen with 64 SPARC processors, etc). So I think it's fair to say that while it's interesting to speculate, until someone actually gets one in their grubby little hands and makes it run, there's no way to tell if it would be a worthwhile endeavor. Overall, though, I don't think it would be a good idea. While right now Apple is writing unibins that run both arcitectures, I imagine there will come a day when they don't. Simply to save space and coding time. If that day ever comes, your PS3 wouldn't run the new applications. Now that day may be so far in the future that it would be irrelevant, but it's a thought.

The cpu archatecture is like no other so any os would have to be ported (actuially i think its ppc, if i remember correctly) and its gonna be uber expensive and i think that will kill it (700 dollars usd) and i think that microsoft will drop the price of xbox 360 when it comes out, so i dont see anyone flocking to it... cept for marketing hype that they are "sold out"

max

Edit: its true that it is ppc based

why would you want to,

why the PS3 itself is quite unappealing, and at such a high price why not just get a Nintendo Wii or xbox 360 and a Mac Mini, you get the pure mac experience, and you get a better gaming experience !

Amen to that, man. Except that you wouldn't be able to buy all of those things on the budget of a single PLAYSTATION 3, which is hard to believe, since it costs so much!

Why would you spend the $500 or $600 to buy a PLAYSTATION 3 (their official naming, all in caps :D), possibly screw it over by trying to run OS X on it, and waste all that money that you should have actually bought the system for: the games (or the Blu-Ray)?

With the money spent on the higher end PLAYSTATION 3 (the $600 "HDMI-enabled" one), you could buy the basic Mac Mini model, or buy the higher priced XBOX 360 package, a few games, a remote control for movies, and another controller, or even a Wii, a few games, another controller, and a DS LITE with a few games! I'd prefer not to buy a PLAYSTATION 3 until its cost comes waaay down.

Compared to Apple Hardware the PS3 is actually pretty cheap, as it is a very powerful device (unlike the mac mini). Someone at SONY once said "If there was an Apple Logo on PS3, we could sell it for thousands of dollars" and I think that statement is true. If you consider the PS3 overpriced you also have to consider that the hardware is very expensive and the PS3 is still sold at loss. However one may of course criticize SONY's decision on using such expensive hardware.

I think there may have been some misunderstanding along SONY employees considering the possibility of Mac OS running legally on PS3, but it is technically possible of course. I think SONY has plans on x86 "emulation" and while it may not be equally fast as native software, it is still possible - after all SONY wants to replace the PC with their new Console, they also wanted the PS2 to be a new Home Computer.

Entering the world of conspiracies, I believe you will all be enjoying Mac OS 11 on your new Cell-based Macintosh Computer sometime around 2008.
