Try booting without PCIRootUID but use -x for safe mode and if successful then check System Profiler

I can boot into safe mode without PCIRootUID. The card is detected, but I'm still limited to 1400x1050 and no QE/CI.

Thanks - same situation as me then.

I'll keep working at it but I think we need the big guns to take a look at it because I'm a bit out of my depth at this point.

Nope, I think we are pretty much stuck now until Apple come out with an ATI6000Controller.kext

Editing device id's into the 5000controller file will not work for the 6800 series cards.

10.6.5 also has the 6800 series device id's in the ATIRadeonX3000.kext file however without an ATI6000Controller.kext they are as good as useless.

I don't think apple would needlessly throw in the 6xxx dev and ven id's just to tease you fellow people.

I'd assume that they are still in the phase of testing out the 6xxx series or else there would have been no signs of the id's being in the x3000 kext

Guess it's just more playing of the waiting game ~_~

I'm getting so crushed by these 6870 and 6850 cards right now..

It started when I wanted to get the new 27" led cinema display for my 2008 mac pro, obv my 8800gt doesnt have any mini-dp ports so i thought id upgrade my gfx card at the same time...

People said hd6870 and 6850 would work as long as I only ran windows, which I do...

So picked up the HIS 6870 and realized i needed double power cables and my pro only had one, so I went back and exchanged it for a Sapphire 6850 which is supposed to only need one 6 pin power cable as I didnt wanna wait 4 days for the delivery of another cable cause I had already gotten the cinema display...

Anyways, the sapphire 6850 toxic with 2 mini-dp, 1 dp (or hdmi?) and 2 dvi ports refuses to light up, computer starts and i can clearly hear the windows sound as it starts, but it just wont send a signal on any of the ports, tried with the 27" ACD and some old DVI screens and nothing works... People seem to be convinced its supposed to work but none of the tips they gave me are usefull (sweep drivers for the old 8800gt before installing the card, booting with windows dvd etc)

My friend has the exact same 2008 mac pro and also got a sapphire 6850 but his card works, the only difference is that his card doesnt have the 2 mini-dp ports..

Is this completely hopeless? If so, will even the apple 5770 work with my 2008 mac pro and my 27" ACD? If I had to order a 20%+ more expensive card from apple that is like 25% slower, wait 1-2 weeks for delivery, and then it still wont light up my ACD I think I would jump from my balcony.

Someone tell me what to do!

@ Cashdonk

Before I do jump just send me that ACD i'll make good use of it 8)

and you should have held out on the 6xxx cards because they don't work the same in bootcamp as they do with regular windows on a pc bios.

and you should have gotten a 5xxx card because there are multiple threads on it actually working the 6xxx only has this one thread going for it and there is no acceleration supported so your best bet would be to go with like a 5770 because it's sure to work in your mac pro

Sounds like your card could be faulty - do you have a pc or a friend with a pc that you can test it in? You may need to send it back for replacement :(

I have the original Sapphire 6850 (non-Toxic edition) with a standard DP. I use the Startech DP-to-miniDP adapter to connect to my 27" ACD with no issue running Windows. I am NOT using a Mac Pro, however.

In case anyone is interested, I ordered the 5770 from apple, got it today, obv came with a second power cable so I thought I'd try my sapphire 6850 toxic with two power cables for fun, was not expecting it to work, but it did, lol.

So now im running my 27" ACD on the 6850 in windows, all ports seem to work, and even the sound in the monitor.

I guess thats what I get for not ordering a second power cable in the first place.

Guess I'll be sending the 5770 back to apple since the 6850 is faster and cheaper, plus have more ports.

Seems you can't get brightness control on the ACD without bootcamp in windows, anyone know a way around that?

The manufacturers don't just throw another 6 pin pci e power port on there to make the card look more badass it actually serves a purpose (~_~)

I woulda found it quite funny though if you kept the card lying around not knowing it needed two cables.

On a side note..

Have you tried out the 6850 in os x to see if it at least gives some form of a display although it isn't fully supported yet?

The picture of the Sapphire 6850 Toxic box contents shows it includes two 6-pin power cables. Did yours not come with two?

The next one is probably inside of the box still but to get a bit back on topic

6xxx netkas

It seems that netkas has been aware of the accelerator but as he states the FB that actually has the card render on screen graphics is still missing out of the lingo which means Apple is doing their thing in secrecy like usual. Just have to sit tight and wait for the FB to drop in an update of some sort.

Sounds about right, I've tried pretty much everything I can think of and being a novice I had to stop after adding in the device id's and new framebuffers to kabyl's chameleon branch and recompiling without any luck :(

Heh, well it clearly states on the box that they recommend one 6 pin cable in regular mode, and two 6 pin cables in dual mode with another card... atleast thats how i enterpret it...

Yeah if I wouldnt have tested it i would've just returned it and be running the apple 5770..

I actually dont have os x on my mac pro anymore :)

Oh the irony of running windows on a Mac Pro SJ would not be pleased to see this.

And it's a good thing you were curious with the second cable or it would have went to a lost cause. And btw your 6850 that your running it to no added work to get it working in the Mac Pro right?
