So is this method and speed the same as installing on an external USB2 drive? I always wanted to do this since I saw a dongle ad about linux on a stick a year ago. how fast is the throughput with 300mb db and php rendering?

What the myslax creator does is create a custom .iso (from the plain vanilla official slax .iso) and burn it either to a cd or usb thumb drive. It allows you to add modules and choose default options for how Slax will boot. (like the 'no cd' which loads slax into the memory -- resulting in a very fast OS). Running it from my thumb drive in a usb2.0 port is seems to be just as fast. php rendering seems to be faster than it is on my Windows or OS X installs.

Impressive! I love the modules. Lots of things you can on a 4gig flash drive.

I just did one on a 123mb stick and it works just fine (cept when i try to change the screen resolution it shuts down) its a really cool proof of concept! i might go get a 4gb stick and then have a full os on there! that would be cool! but i like my 250gb hdd more...
