I recently built my own hackintosh with a couple of modifications to the Lifehacker build - notably I used the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R board which has the same specs but instead it only has 1 LAN port vs. the 2 on the UD3P (didn't need 2 LAN's and if I might have to use the PCI NIC why get the the UD3P?).

Bottom line, the build went smoothly and I was quite grateful for this forum as a resource - Thanks to every one!

Also wanted to report that I am using an 24" HP monitor with HDMI and was able to update to SL 10.6.2 (I'd hate to jynx myself so that sound in the background is me knocking on wood!). My PNY 9800 GT has 2 X DVI and I am using a DVI:HDMI adapter on the lower port.

But I do have a few questions:

  1. I intend to make this into a multiboot with Win 7 Ultimate and based on the info in the forum I am sure that too will go smoothly (just waiting to get another copy of Win 7). I have an ATI TV Wonder (HD 650PCIe Dual Tuner) card that I want to use with the Win 7 build. Any thoughts as to what will happen or if it will cause a conflict when I use SL?

This is kind of a crapshoot. Afaik it can go either way.

Either OSX will ignore it completely because the DSDT was setup saying there'd be no card there, or it's going to KP because it has no idea why it's there.

SBMac is the Graphics guru, and has experimented more in that area.

I would say that if you have the card, it won't hurt to just stick it in now, boot, and see what happens.

(After all, getting Win7 to use/ignore extra cards is commonplace and not the experimental part)

2. Is there a way to remap keys on my Logitech LX710 keyboard so I can have an "Apple/Command" key - or would I be better off getting the diNovo for Mac keyboard noted in post #952?

Can I ask why you aren't using the Windows key? It's already set as the Apple key.

I'm a noob so please tell me how I can determine my CPU temps - With Win 7 there is a gadget I have on the desktop; is there something like that for SL? Where can I get it?

As mentioned here before, we use FakeSMC to translate the mobo sensor data to data

the SMC would send to OSX. It is NOT exact and there are misfires all the time.

At this point I wouldn't trust any data from that just yet. (We've seen CPUs hotter than the sun here!)

Thanks for the props, it's nice to know we're appreciated.

As for other places to get info, there are some, but I think IM is the best.

Check the rest of the forums for general OSx86 info, there's a wealth out there.

When you go into About This Mac what type of proc does it say you have?

i believe i used the version 3 of the installer from stell's blog

my about this mac says Processor 3.1 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

anyone else having problems with getting netflix streaming to work ?

You can modify the modifier keys in the Keyboard System Preference->Modifier Keys.

Is your USB reader USB 1.0? Was it plugged in via a hub or directly to the mac? These can affect the speed.

I sometimes see the snow when my monitor wakes up and I'm using DVI. At worst case, I've had to turn the monitor on/off. That's about it.

Thanks Ed (and of course your previous posts were helpful as well!). It was connected directly to the Hac and I believe the card reader is 2.0 but don't know for sure... I do know it's the same one I've used on other PC's (XP, Vista and Win 7) and it was never took that long to download. In the future I may upload to my server and then grab them from there.

As to the monitor, not going to complain if I have to turn it off and on every once and a while but was just curious if it was unique to my situation (HDMI monitor, 10.6.2, etc.)

Thanks! I was going to plug in the TV Wonder card and see what happens but had a concern of messing with something that works. But trial and error is part of the game, right?

"Windows Key" - yeah, was playing around today and found that one (noob!). But I've gotten to the point of using the "CTRL" key so often it will take time to learn. Also getting frustrated with the "home," "end" and "F5" keys as well as the extra buttons on my mouse not going back and forward on screens. Again, it's a learning curve and experimentation.

CPU temp was of a curiosity (and perhaps to get a baseline to see if something starts to go out of whack). Found and started using iStat.

New question: can I use Parallels 5 with my Hac? I downloaded a trial and when I installed Win 7 as a virtual machine, W7 wasn't able to find the driver for my network adaptor... BIOS is set to internal and works on the Hac. Perhaps I should install the PCI card? I was going to search IM but saw your replies and thought I include in my response. (FYI - Would sure make it easier when I want to use different programs on each OS and saw that Amazon has it on sale for $40 after rebate. Decided to try the trial and if it works then I'd buy.)

Again, you guys have been a tremendous help. Thanks!

For the mouse, I always recommend SteerMouse. It's completely mappable and awesome.

As far as Parallells, that's not just a general question, but one that is covered heavily in its own thread. Run through the forum and you'll find what you need.

We try to keep this thread small so it's easier to find stuff. ;-)

just wanted to drop a note of thanks to everyone on one the forum for being an amazing resource -- and a special shout out to Stella & Adam for...everything. my hac is running 10.6.2 with stell's v3 pkg smoothly -- same hardware specs as the lifehacker post, except with the asus wireless card stella rec'd on his blog (WL-138g v2) as well as an arctic freezer pro 7 rev2 heatsink. (my first build attempt, i didn't get that poorly designed intel heatsink seated properly on the mobo and things went haywire. the artic is so easy to install, much better design, cooler, and quieter).

one strange thing is that on a previous (failed) install, photobooth recognized the webcam in my dell sp2208wfp's camera OOB, but it's not being recognized right now. i've only had the system up for about 10 seconds, so i have some more poking around to do.

a million thanks. i'll be checking back - curious about the netflix streaming issues. i'm going to attempt to add some firewire audio recording hardware & a protools setup for anyone interested, so i'll post my experience with that....

I know this is a long shot but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the second (lower) PCIe(8x) slot? I have 2 ATI 4850 and the second one causes problem in my 10.6.2 install. However, I dual boot this machine with Win7 and I am hoping to get crossfire (reason for this MB.) If there is a way to disable it in the 10.6.2 then it will get me going as I don't need the second card for 10.6.2.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have followed the Lifehacker guide to install Snow Leopard Server on my GA-EP45-UD3R I prefer the USB Method over doing the having to have a old Leopard partition and all of that junk lol.

I was able to install and everything is smooth. The only problem I'm having is the AUDIO.

I don't have Audio.

When I go to System Preferences and go to Sound, I am able to select noises but I hear nothing from my Speakers. I also followed the instructions to set the Audio to Digital Out still nothing.

I tried to use my DSDT.aml from my old setup and rebooted the system, after rebooting I lost Video, Network and the ability to select sounds from System Preferences.

Any suggestions ? I just need Audio lol

Parallels 5 has worked fine on my hack. I have a win 7 VM and a Win 2003 Server VM running at all times and have not had any issues....I did not purcahse the additional network card, Im just using the one on the board. I would try using an already existing VM rather than trying to create one in parallels and see if that helps!

I would try using an already existing VM rather than trying to create one in parallels and see if that helps!

Thanks for getting back - I appreciate it. I don't have "an already existing VM" but maybe I'm missing something.

When I installed using onboard LAN I was able to install Win 7 fine except I didn't have access to the LAN and therefore couldn't update or basically do anything requiring access to my network or internet. Then I installed the recommended PCI NIC but ironically could never seem to get that to run right (yes, reconfigured BIOS and even did a fresh install of 10.6 with from the flash drive and the V3 installer).

I was going to post an inquiry in the "dual-boot and virtualization" forum BUT since I'm a noob who hadn't posted five times I was unable to start a new topic (figures this new rule would be implemented TODAY when I needed to post). As luck would have it, this is now my fifth post so hopefully I'm eligible now!!

fyi, that card isn't supported in Windows 7 as of now.

I followed this guide and it was very easy.

a few things didn't work.

i have the EP45-UD3P V1 motherboard, several sata HD's, and a 8800GT 512.

Sound didn't work at first but simply switch the output to digital out and its all good.

Bonjour didn't work, but i installed a little script to put en0 into promisc mode and that was done...

Now the weird part. Majic mouse doesn't work but mighty mouse does.

turns out you need to update to 10.6.1 for that.

I download the 10.6.2 combo updater from apple and it says...

"Mac OS X Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update"

Perhaps i didn't search well but i can't find any posts about this. Maybe i am missing something really simple?

All drives that are listed on the update have yellow triangles with exclamation points in them...even time machine disk.

Can anyone help?

Oh and the software update app shows i am all up to date, so it seems to know i can't update to 10.6.1 or 10.6.2.

Thanks in advance.

Try using "internal speakers" instead of "digital out" - had the same problem and that's what worked for me.

fyi, that card isn't supported in Windows 7 as of now.

I used these drivers on ATI and was able to get it to work after several attempts. (Also, DON'T use the Catalyst tuner/PVR software... only Win 7 works!)

I'm using MC in Win7 and was able to scan in channels through the (useless) COMCAST set-top-box as well as ClearQAM for HD. The only problem I've had is when I record HD immediately prior or after "cable" (or vice versa). Perhaps the signals cannot overlap one another (which a "dual-tuner" should be able to do!).

After your comment, I went back to ATI and noticed they uploaded a new driver a couple of days ago... may give those a go over the weekend.

(FYI - I'm using the ATI card in my other PC and haven't yet tried it in the hackintosh.)

Parallels 5 has worked fine on my hack. After reading your reply, I uninstalled and then reinstalled Parallels 5 after removing the PCI NIC and low and behold it's working like a dream. It's a little slow but still pretty amazing considering. I'm running 1 core with 2048MB of RAM - my hackintosh has a total of 4GB. Perhaps I should add more RAM and that would speed things up a bit.

Thanks for your help!

OK, I've got a fairly standard Lifehacker/Stella Hack that I built in late Sep/early Oct. Only substantive changes were to use a C2D E4500 and a MSI NX8600GT Twin Turbo video card, both left overs from an upgrade cycle on my Windows 7 box. Upgraded the Hack to 10.6.1 without issue and then upgraded to 10.6.2, also without issue. With 10.6.3 soon upon us I started poking around this forum. The ONLY issue I've had is that the 256MB VRAM of my video card shows up as 512MB in System Profiler. I've never thought that was a big deal and it doesn't bother me unless it could cause problems in the future. I'm 90% sure I used the V1 Stella MAgic Installer. After reading about the V3 update, and the auto detect for graphics cards, I'm considering doing it. Most of the references to V3 discuss doing it on a clean install or on an install still at 10.6.1. The box is very stable so I don't want to mess it up. Is there a step by step guide for updating an existing install to V3?

Thanks

- Boot up your hack.

- Back up your /Extras folder, then delete it.

- Run the v3 installer and point it at your main install HD.

- Enjoy.

Appreciate the forum.

Getting ready to try this. Wife and I have twin Mac Mini 1.25 G4s running 10.4 at present. Planning on building a set of twin Hackintoshes to replace them. The hardest work the new machines will be doing is playing WoW (wife and kids like to play). The Minis have both had hard drive failures and are being run off of Firewire external drives. Both have had thermal issues. Really, really don't like Minis.

Highlights:

Keeping the motherboard and video card the same,

Subbing a Dual Core (same clock) for the Quad Cores,

Subbing Corsair memory (same spec and quantity).

Omitting the NICs (it appears a lot of folks have been able to get the onboard Ethernet working)

Using a NZXT Gamma case with a Corsair 550 power supply.

I don't want to overclock , but I am trying to overbuild, so at the end of the day I have something that will be cool and stable for a long time to come.

Here's my Amazon list (planning on pulling the trigger at the end of the week). I welcome any constructive criticism. I've tried to research this pretty carefully but I am by no means an expert.

The CPU, as is noted earlier can be any intel fitting the board, technically I've heard Pent D's working, so no problem there.

The memory can be anything that fits in the board, and doesn't have to be 8GB. (Mine is 4)

The RAM listed is slower than the same brand I bought from Newegg. (mine is 4-4-4-12)

The DVD you'll want to make sure is one someone gave a nod to here, or in OSx86 in general.

The v3 installer we use enables tons of Nvidia cards, so you'll want make sure you have

a card that works best for you.

YES, the vidcard from the build is the ONLY one Stella will ensure works with updates,

but I think the increased support is here to stay.

There are benefits from other cards; Newer/faster tech, lower NOISE(This one's a beast), HDMI ports, etc.

If you want a vidcard nomination talk to SBMac, he's generally the go-to on vid tech here.

Other than that, you're all good.

OK, have swapped the Corsair Memory for Crucial Technology BL2KIT25664AA80A 4GB Kit 2GBx2 Ballistix 240-Pin DIMM¿4-4-4-12 Unbuffered NON-ECC DDR2-800 2.0V DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module (Closest I could find in Corsair was something like 4-4-4-15

I'll need to do more digging on the DVD, I know it's a model sold by OWC for Macs.

On the video card we're both running DVI displays (hers 20" 1600x900, mine 23" 1920x1080). I'm sure anything will seem incredibly fast compared to what we are used to.

I would get the fastest quad core that you can afford. Really shop around and wait. There are always sales that pop up. Having a fast quad will make it last longer before you feel the need to upgrade. Good RAM is also worth the extra money. Don't be afraid to overclock a bit The UD3P is made for overclocking and a 9550 goes naturally to 3.4 GHz without any trouble or heat issues. Silent video cards are always better. A loud card can drive you nuts and force you replace it.

This is a really good and proven hack and worth the few extra bucks upfront so you don't end up buying replacement cpu's and RAM later.

RANT:

I have to say that it's quite a shame that this thread has gotten so far off topic that it is not very useful for people with the EXACT lifehacker build.

A new thread could have been started for this motherboard and differing video cards, or another thread for the v3 installer and what hardware works and does not.

I have come back to this thread a few times to try to see what other users had experienced with this exact build, but instead, I've never been able to catch up due to all the questions that are NOT relevent to the original topic. I've given up after reading 30 pages of video card problems.

THE DSDT DOES NOT CONTAIN KEXTS FOR OTHER VIDEO CARDS.

It's a shame that what could have been a useful thread to users with the exact build in maintaining their systems over time has been buried with irrelevent information.

/RANT

Ok, I have a few questions that I would like to put into the original post, like a sticky, so that we can recover some of the buried info.

1. Updating the OS with software update, is there an installer (other than the original) that will safely allow me to upgrade? Is there anything to watch out for?

2. I've had alot of issues getting windows to run on a seperate HD. Does anyone have insight on whether to use the darwin boot or the motherboard boot priority to boot windows?

3. Is there a way to use the onboard NIC's without being limited in any way?

4. What is needed to get silverlight working?

Feel free to PM me any other pertinent issues and I will update the original post.

Sorry to rant at you guys, it's just a bummer to have to sift through so much information that isn't relevent to the topic of the thread. Please start new threads if you want to change the subject. Cmon, forum etiquette is pretty universal now.

RANT:

It's almost as bad as people asking for help and not giving enough detail...

:)

What version of Windows? If it's XP, you're going to be far better off using Windows' loader and chainloading Chameleon. This is the only way I could reliably run my Windows installation as both a boot OS and in VMWare (seen as a BootCamp partition).

4. What is needed to get silverlight working?

Mine worked without any extra effort.
