Glad to hear you're doing some testing :)
Yes, I felt it was the next step for this install.

Networking Test Update:

Well my testing today has been with the iPhone remote app for controlling iTunes and iTunes' music library sharing with a vista machine which both use Bonjour. It might come as no surprise to some of you, but these tests both fail with my install, where as they work with lensboard's install.

I have managed to get these working with this install by using Psystars RealtekR1000 driver here, but the bad news is that I can't get it to work from Chameleon's /Extra/Extensions :D

Therefore, at present, the only way I can get these working is to add this kext to /System/Library/Extensions in the retail install, which defeats the point of this install. Hopefully, this doesn't mean it can't be done, so if anybody else finds a way then please share the details. If any of you want to add this kext to your install then you can do it easily by using Kext Helper b7.

I have got it working from Chameleon's /Extra/Extensions by copying the RealtekR1000's dependencies in with it. These are IONetworkingFamily.kext and IPOCIFamily.kext which you will find in the retail install's /System/Library/Extensions.

I don't think this is ideal, as it's similar to the VoodooHDA situation where the dependencies are required. Which means if and when Apple do an update and change any of these dependent extensions then we might have to copy the new ones in to /Extra/Extensions. But for now, this is good enough for me.

EDIT: I have found reports of the GA311 not working here but I would like this confirmed.

@justmetoo

As you are using the Gigabyte GA311 network card, would it be possible for you to test iTunes' library sharing with your system? I would like to find out if iTunes sharing works with the install described in my guide with the network card without having to add the Psystar kext.

If you can and would like to help or have any questions on this then please PM me.

Thanks

This does look like a USB issue. Are you using USB ports 1&2, the top most ones on the back? Have you any other mouse to try?

Re: iTunes music file sharing on a network

“In iTunes / preferences / sharing tab can you tick 'Look for shared libraries' and 'Share my library on my local network'. And do the same on your G5 iMac. Then on each machine, can you see the other machines library in iTunes in the left pane?”

Tried this and no users appeared on either computer, hack or G5.

When I went to this apple support link:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203

and moved the music folder to a public place (desktop) I could see and play the music from the other computer.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for trying this out.

So it didn't work and you had your network cable plugged in to the GA311 network card? From that then I can take it Bonjour doesn't work with the default install even with a GA311 network card.

When I went to this apple support link:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203

and moved the music folder to a public place (desktop) I could see and play the music from the other computer.

This will work because it is just file sharing, but here I wanted to test Bonjour, which is Apples Zero config network protocol which allows automatic discovery of services.

Thanks again for your help.

EDIT: I have found reports of the GA311 not working here but I would like this confirmed.

@justmetoo

Thanks

Did you mean Netgear GA311?

I have a Netgear 311, not a Gigabyte.

I did a quick test out of curiousity.

Firstly, I usually have this iTunes shared library feature turned off.

With it enabled I just found iTunes would partially freeze for short to long periods with varying frequencies.

With it disabled, iTunes functions normally.

This is true for me on a MBP and for OSx.

I enabled iTunes sharing on a MBP and OSx (both for this retail vanilla install and iDeneb 10.5.6)

iTunes in the MBP recognises, loads up and plays the shared playlist from iTunes library installed on OSx.

iTunes on the OSx does not get the shared library from MBP.

This is the situation for both iDeneb and this Vanilla retail.

I did not try what justmetoo mentions.

I hope that helps a bit.

Thanks for the comment about my install guide. I am happy you found it simple to follow.

As for your iBall Wireless keyboard & mouse, I don't really know why it doesn't work. I don't have them to experiment with so unfortunately it's going to be up to you to do some research. Nobody else has had any problems using a standard usb keyboard & mouse, so it must be something to do with the the iBall.

But at least you have a functioning setup using your PS/2 keyboard & mouse which will keep you going for now. Sorry I can't give you anymore help on this. But if I find anything out then I will let you know.

Hi geithals

Yes, I meant Netgear, not Gigabyte (it was a long day yesterday).

I enabled iTunes sharing on a MBP and OSx (both for this retail vanilla install and iDeneb 10.5.6)

.....

iTunes on the OSx does not get the shared library from MBP.

That means that Bonjour is not functioning correctly on yours either and that's with a Netgear GA311 too.

So from what I am reading and understanding is the Netgear GA311 doesn't work OoB using my install.

Thank you

It's up to you if you want to try the USB fix, you can do whatever you like to your system to get it working as you want it. This guide which I put together was a way to try and get everything up and running from Chameleon's /Extra/Extensions folder so as to leave the /System/Library/Extensions folder untouched. But if you need to add something else then try it first in /Extra/Extensions and only if it doesn't work then of course resort back to adding it to the retail system.

FWIW re Bonjour

I just did a test on my daughters, which has iAtkos v7 (cham2)

same Gigabyte MB but uses onboard R8111c for the net, installed driver that comes with that install (r1000?)

It recognises the MBP iTunes playlist fully

Thanks for that info, but that driver is pretty much the same as the one I got working earlier. I think Psystar just tweaked it slightly. But if you want to try that version of the R1000 on your system instead of the one I posted and let me know if it works too then maybe we could use that one instead of Psystars. (Or post the link to it here and I will give it a try).

Network Testing Conclusion

As far as I can tell, the Bonjour issue with iTunes is now fixed and all from Chameleon's /Extra/Extensions folder. So we can call this a success. Thanks to everyone for their help and with testing.

To recap what is needed....

Get Psystar's RealtekR1000 driver here and then copy that and the required dependencies 'IONetworkingFamily.kext' and 'IPOCIFamily.kext' which you will find in the retail install's /System/Library/Extensions, to Chameleon's /Extra/Extensions. Rebuild your Extensions.mkext and reboot.

This will fix any Bonjour issues with iTunes, it has the added bonus of activating Automatic Sleep and I can now wake from sleep with the keyboard rather than pressing the power button on my case.

One outstanding question is Bonjour's printer sharing. If possible, can anyone maybe test this?

An updated version, RC2, of the Chameleon bootloader is out. I am going to be testing it out today.

You can read about it and find the installer package at

h t t p : / / c h a m e l e o n . o s x 8 6 . h u /

It works great so far. If anybody wants to try it, and feels confident they know what they're doing, you can install to the Chameleon partition over the RC1 version currently there. Leaving the options on default for now.

Remember: As with anything that makes changes to your system, it's always wise to have a backup of your system and a way of recovering if it ever becomes un-bootable

I would be wary if you are going to try using deep sleep / hibernate mode 1 as it results in a CMOS Checksum Error.

Hi blackosx, i tried putting the IOPCIFamily.kext and IOUSBFamily.kext in the /E*/E* folder rebuild the Extensions.mkext but the rig froze, next i tried removing IOPCIFamily.kext and IOUSBFamily.kext from /S*/L*/E* folder and touched the Extensions.mkext still no avail may be it has some dependencies idk. So i was back where i started

Then i found one could make an entry in the apple.boot.plist to reset UHCI and ask EHCI to acquire

<key>UHCIreset</key>

<string>y</string>

<key>EHCIacquire</key>

<string>y</string>

it didn't make much since so i just gave it a try. Now it works fine if i plug the transceiver to the rig directly but i still get the same error when i plug it in the kvm switch. came up with another solution for that too. onec i plug in the usb wireless transceiver into a usb port i unplug it and plug in the kvm's usb cable into the same port and then plug the transceiver into the kvm's usb port. its strange but it works.

Will try the new chameleon and the paystar lan driver

Hi -iCE!HACKER

Well done for persevering with your build.

For the Bonjour fix you need to copy the Psystar kext, the IOPCIFamily.kext and IONetworkingFamily.kext, not IOUSBFamily.kext.

Then i found one could make an entry in the apple.boot.plist to reset UHCI and ask EHCI to acquire

Yes, there are a few different options to play with in the com.apple.Boot.plist. I have never played with the UCHI/EHCI fixes. But it sounds like it has worked for you. :)

Just thought you would me able to make more sense of things than me.

What things are not making sense that you would want me to see?

Thanks :)

Thanks for very much for the guide blackosx. I installed and it works almost perfectly. Having a couple issues though. First, the motherboard's ethernet isn't working or showing up in system prefs. I am using a PCI ethernet card at the moment and it seems to be working fine, but I'd prefer to at least have the onboard LAN working. The other issue is that Transmission freezes the whole system if I add a few torrents to it, not sure if it's related. Anyone have any ideas? I'm running the EP45C-DS3R.

Hi thedrivel

It's great this install for the EP45-DS3L nearly works for your EP45C-DS3R but I can't really do any specific testing for you. But looking at the specs of your board, I would have thought the onboard LAN would work. You do have it turned on in the BIOS? Have you tried it without the Psystar R1000 kext to see if it works natively with 10.5.7? or maybe try a genuine Realtek driver? The audio chip on your mobo is ALC889A so you might be able to use a complete DSDT.aml and not voodooHDA?

As for Transmission freezing the system? I have no idea on that one, maybe a network issue?

Get Psystar's RealtekR1000 driver

I guess I'll need to give that a shot. Pity about the extra kext needed, but I suppose it's either that or more hardware.

For anyone considering the a hardware option, a pci or pci-x gigabit card, xlr8yourmac has a lot of reports of various cards and problems, these issues aren't limited to hackintoshes ;) In fact some people even installed the psystar drivers to get third party gigabit cards working on leopard macs!

This will fix any Bonjour issues with iTunes, it has the added bonus of activating Automatic Sleep and I can now wake from sleep with the keyboard rather than pressing the power button on my case.

I've never been able to get the power button to wake from sleep, it always reboots - might need to check the way I've connected the cable from the case to the mobo :)

One outstanding question is Bonjour's printer sharing. If possible, can anyone maybe test this?

Well I haven't installed this fix yet, but it was working at least some of the time before, whereas trying iTunes sharing yesterday failed completely, can't even see each other. There's always the possibility of this being a firewall issue, I haven't checked into that (I use waterroof to config ipfw ). But I'd be very surprised if printer sharing failed after this fix.

I'll let you know how it goes when I get around to installing this fix :)

Hi ZenGiga

Yes it is a shame to have to use extra kexts for the Bonjour fix, but I think it's worth it as it now gives a more complete experience. As for your sleep, I still wonder what could be causing your problem as mine is perfect. And the printer sharing issue, I would guess that's sorted now, but without being able to test this myself I don't know for sure.

I have left my firewall set to default settings.

But with regards to installing this fix, I have uploaded all the kexts that I use in /Extra/Extensions on the front page of this thread. You should just be able to add all of them, except the UUID.kext, to your /Extra/Extensions folder, rebuild Extensions.mkext and it should be done for you. (it might help with your sleep too?)

Thanks :)

Hi, Could I be doing something wrong here? Most people seem to have some success with RC2. I set up all my systems (see sig) for RC1 using a combination of the Blackosx and LS8 methods and all systems work great both with a USB stick and with the EFI partition.

But with RC2, all I get is a 'can't find mach_kernel' message. I've tried using -f prior to hitting my OSX button, but get the same message. Using RC2, I get all my Windows drives showing, but only my boot OSX drive (don't see my Chameleon USB stick or my OSX data drive as I did with RC1). Under RC1, if I would have clicked on my Chameleon USB stick, I would have gotten the same 'can't find mach_kernel' message as I get with my boot OSX drive under RC2.

I haven't seen anyone else even mention this and since this happens on both my Gigabyte and BadAxe2 systems, I'm guessing I've missed something that is pretty obvious to others. Thanks.

Hi, Could I be doing something wrong here? ....

with RC2, all I get is a 'can't find mach_kernel' message. I've tried using -f prior to hitting my OSX button, but get the same message. ....

I'm guessing I've missed something that is pretty obvious to others.

As you've had it working with RC1, then I guess you've done something different with RC2 as it should work the same. I think the 'can't find mach_kernel' message means you are asking it to boot a partition which doesn't have the boot1h loader on it. Maybe re-installing the files manually might help? or try asking over at the voodoo projects forum who created Chameleon, they should be able to be more specific.

Hope this helps

1st: Thanks for the tutorial - my new installation (EP45-DS3L + 8800GTS 640MB) works fine - except:

1. Audio - works fine with output to "unknown". But I think this might cause the real problem I have: "I have

a Stealth-Plug to connect the guitar - its an USB device. It is recognized as an USB device (checked via SystemProfiler), but it does not give me another audio in/out-device.

In the System.log I see "Jul 28 15:23:16 localhost kextd[10]: cannot resolve dependencies for kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext"

It should work with Apples USB Audio - according to the description....

2. Sleep - OS X is going into sleep and powers off correctly. But on wakeup (e.g. double-click with mouse) resets just like a normal power-on

Any ideas ???

regards

Gerhard

Hi Gerhard

The VoodooHDA audio driver recognises the audio out as unknown device, so that is correct.

This install is built around getting everything working on this motherboard, so when it comes to extra hardware, this is always going to be unknown territory. So you are going to have to do some playing here and from reading the system.log error for the Stealth-Plug USB device I can ask you to try and load AppleUSBAudio.kext manually to see what dependencies it's missing.

To do this, go to the Terminal and type sudo kextload -t /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext

This should do a test on the kext and indicate whether it's loadable and it's required dependencies etc. Then hopefully from the result you can have more of an idea.

Doing it on my G5 gives this....

sudo kextload -t /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext
Password:
extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext has potential problems:
Warnings
{
"Kext has no explicit kernel dependency" = true
}

kextload: extension /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext appears to be loadable
kextload: /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBAudio.kext loaded successfully

2. Sleep - OS X is going into sleep and powers off correctly. But on wakeup (e.g. double-click with mouse) resets just like a normal power-on

Can you find anything in the System.log about this?

Have you any other hardware plugged in other than the keyboard & mouse? If so, can you maybe try it with only the keyboard & mouse?

I will try to re-install the boot1h loader when I get home. Am I correct though, that if my RC1 USB stick still works perfectly, and it's just the RC2 that won't, that that means the boot1h loader must be there or RC1 wouldn't be working?

Both of my USB sticks are identical and both are formatted as mbr/journaled. The only difference is RC1 vs. RC2 installers. Thanks again.
