teddiesmooth
1-Is it mandatory to format GPT? Can I keep Vista on MBR? I already shrink the volume in half and I have an active HFS+ partition. I would recommend doing a fresh install on a spare hard drive for iAtkos. That's good what you did. I prefer GPT but MBR will work too. After you get your Vanilla OSX install straight on the HFS+ partition, keep the HDD with iAtkos on it in a safe place, just incase you bork something in the Vanilla install. 2-What would happen to vista when I switch to RAID? Make sure you install the Intel Matrix Storage drivers in Vista before you switch to RAID mode. Windows will bluescreen if you switch your ACHI mode to RAID and try to boot before doing this. You can download a fresh copy from Dell's support site. 3-Can I run RAID in both OS? Yes and no. If you want hardware RAID in OSX, stick with 10.5.6. The 10.5.7 update requires Chameleon 2.0 RC1, and as I found out the hard way, the ACHI and ATA kext with Chameleon 2.0 RC1 won't work in RAID. Also note that if you install Chameleon 2.0 with 10.5.6 using RAID mode, you will get a boot1: Error message and won't be able to get into OSX. I would recommend using the RAID builder from the Intel Matrix Storage utility during bootup (screen will show up with all SATA/eSATA drives available, and which ones are part of the RAID array, press CTRL-I at this screen). Read up on the utility through the documentation on Dell's site and you should be good to go. You could always use the software RAID from OSX or Windows. There are pros and cons to each method. mutis
Thanks Teddiesmooth I can claim "another success" but I end up using "XxX x86 10.5.6 Install Disc Universal Finalv2" patched w/PF1 (note is version 2), it's way easier and it's vanilla, thanks to TsubakiSama. With this distro there's no need to change to RAID but CPU must be set to 1 and disable Hyperthreading at boot use busratio=20. I choose Chameleon 2.0 RC1 dual booting with Vista, not RAID for now I think I'm going to wait for a RAID fix. First time I boot I did it with -x then I copied dsdt.aml from Yardie and I run the HD3650 installer. 2nd time before I boot I went to BIOS and enable CPU ALL and Hyperthreading. Geekbench 32bit it's all I have now it scored the same as Vista 8800. Couple of little problems system profiler and geekbench report my memory DDR2 667Mhz how do I fix that? and USB is not mounting unless I boot with it. That's about it all I need is to fix network and audio but the system it's very stable. Thanks to Yardie, even though I didn't exactly use his guide but he started the ball rolling. ebox86
Ok, can someone help me waaaay back in the begining of this. Way back to the part where you install iAtkos 5i, and i have customized the installation and i click 'install' and os x installs and then it reboots. Now when it reboots, it seems to want the disk in there, or else it won't do anything. So i leave the disk in there and i don't press any buttons when it asks, and then it starts to boot for the first time after install now at this point where im at is a grey screen with a grey "X" circle and a spinning progress wheel to the bottom. Now i have left it here at this stage for minutes, tens of minutes, and now hours. Is this correct? did you all do it this way, or am i missing something. OP moves on the updating to 10.5.6 part really fast, and it seems like im doing something wrong. If someone can help me with this, that would be great, i love mac osx Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/151117-guide-installing-leopard-on-dell-studio-xps-i7/page/5/#findComment-1172040 Share on other sites
ebox86
Ok so basically im trying kalyway 10.5.2 since im having no luck with iAtkos 5i and it the instructions posted here are not very clear. Im using the same dell studio xps 435mt and it seems like the posts here and what the actual computer is doing is two completely different things. anyway, im trying the 9.2.2 vanilla kernel and im gonna try the combo update to get close to 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 So anyway, i will post any progress i am having, or any unluck i am having... mutis
I fixed the long boot problem by editing the dsdt.dst and then running DSDT Patcher again.1. Run DSDT Patcher and select option 0. Open the debug folder and edit dsdt.dst. In the first 20 lines of code remove any CPU aliases. copy dsdt.dst to the folder above and run command DSDT\ Patcher dsdt.dst. It will create a new dsdt.aml. Rename this to DSDT.aml and copy to the root of Vanilla. Boot time drops from minutes to 30 seconds or less. You should also enable all cores and Hyperthreading in the BIOS. When I opened activity monitor I thought I was down to one core. It's because activity monitor ran out of space and showed a summary. Open CPU history windows and you'll have all 8 cores listed. Yardie or anybody else could you be more specific what lines (CPU aliases) you'd removed? and I'm guessing dsdt.dst is a typo you meant dsdt.dsl correct? disregard I've been using Yardie's dsdt.aml but I want to create my own to see if can solve the sleep and USB not mounting issue. labboss
Does anyone have 10.5.7 running cleanly on the XPS? If so, could you update this thread with a listing of what bios settings, bootloader, kernel and kext combination works for you? I have a virgin install of 10.5.7 on an external drive (USB, FireWire or eSata) formated GUID... and IATKOS on an internal drive. However it freezes after a few minutes of operation, regardless of being idle or active, so it may not be very usefull. Many kudos to those who put so much effort into this project.... it is appreciated!! Thanks.. ebox86
UPDATE Ok, so basically i wasted my time with kalyway, and went back to the guide and yardie's instructions, and it turns out, im a dumbass... ...basically what i was doing was when iAtkos was done installing, i would just reboot it, but on this {censored} ass dell bios, it tries to boot from the cd, and with the cd inserted, it would try something funny and not boot, so what i had to end up going to get the iAtkos to first boot, was hit F12 at the dell logo on bootup to select a boot device. I then selected my hard drive, and iAtkos booted. So that was my problem, i just was getting confused when it installed and when i left the disk in the drive after reboot. So if anyone was confused at that point, jus press F12 to select your hard drive on reboot after the iAtkos install So anyway, getting back to progress. Here is where im at now: (√) ---------- Change Bios settings (√) ---------- Install iAtkos 10.5.5 (√) ---------- Update via combo update to 10.5.6 (√) ---------- Added yardie's kexts (√) ---------- Copied over the system.kext to S/L/E and the voodoo kernal from the kernal folder within DD's package and renamed it mach_kernel.voodoo (you need to add the .voodoo) and placed it in the root of your boot device. (√) ---------- Run PC_EFIv9 (√) ---------- Put yardie's DSDT.aml in root and com.apple.Boot.plist in library/preferences/systemconfiguration (√) ---------- REPAIR PERMISSIONS!!! REPAIR PERMISSIONS!!! (Disk Utility) (√) ---------- Reboot ( ) ---------- Install Graphics (4850) ( ) ---------- Install Lan/Audio ( ) ---------- Update to 10.5.7 So i can boot into the new voodoo kernel, but what i can't do is get into the gui because i have no video drivers, and when i try to boot up into the gui, i get a garbled screen of pink, and green and grey static. But its good that voodoo boots, and its also good that there is a way to use 10.5.7 beta drivers to get the 4850 to work under 10.5.6. What i don't know is how to load the 4850 kexts into the system via the -s single user mode prompt. I've tried booting using -x, -f, -v and i can't get into the gui to load the 4850 drivers So anyway, that is where i am at. I have included the needed files to get the 4850 up and running with 10.5.6: ♦ Run the 7_radeon_hd_48x0_drivers.pkg i have included. It is in 3 parts because of the upload cap of 2 megs (DON'T RESTERT YET) ♦ Install the ATY_Motmot kexts with kext helper (Repair permissions) ♦ Reboot with -f -v If you are getting a jumpy/bouncy screen when you move your mouse, apply the natit_no_powerplay.pkg i have also included and reboot. This is a great thread and it needs to stay active, please post if you can help As soon as i can get graphics up and running on my voodoo kernal, i will be on to getting Chameleon v2.0 and the AHCI port injector and the 10.5.7 update ּּ▲ ▲ ▲ yes, its fake ATY_Motmot.kext.zip 7_radeon_hd_48x0_drivers.part1.rar 7_radeon_hd_48x0_drivers.part2.rar 7_radeon_hd_48x0_drivers.part3.rar Natit_no_powerplay_4800_4600.rar Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/151117-guide-installing-leopard-on-dell-studio-xps-i7/page/5/#findComment-1174765 Share on other sites

I used XxX distro and upgrade to 10.5.7 it's easier (less complicated to achieve vanilla install) than Yardie's but I have some issues USB is not mounting unless I do repair permissions command also sleep is not working, performance is not a problem and it's very stable no panics or freezes. Audio internet firewire all working and it's vanilla. Check previous postings from TsubakiSama . I can't post for a v2 link but look careful here http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...2876&st=540 this v2 Final needs to be patch, google for the patch. I haven't read any feedback from people using Yardie's method about issues so I'd be great if someone can chime in and report back. BIOS setup: change CPU from ALL to 1 and disable Hyperthreading. boot busratio=20 on distro pick: Vanilla 9.6.3 kernel i7 AppleDecrypt NullCPUManagement SMBIOSEFI Enabler Chameleon 2 RC1 DSDT patcher disabler.kext SMBIOSResolver new iCHx (ICH10) IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext This would get OSX running, maybe one or some options aren't necessary if someone try please feedback. teddiesmooth
I don't have that problem.Mine takes 17 seconds in the last bootup from the apple logo to login screen. Looks like I have some monkeying around to do (i.e. remove irrelevant Yardie kexts, repatch DSDT file). I knew I must have botched something up during the install of 10.5.7 to cause this. I'll follow your steps outlined a few posts ago and hopefully it will fix the slow boot times. rix187
Format the hard driveGrab a copy of iAtkos 5i. I've tried iDeneb but the voodoo kernel crashes on my system. When the installer loads open up Disk Utility. Format the drive for GPT. Create 2 or more partitions. I have a small iAtkos partition of 20GB used as my failsafe. I have a MSDOS partition of 80GB for Windows Vista (yes, you can install Windows under GPT. I'll show you how). And I have a Retail partition of 80GB I call Vanilla. After the disk is formatted you can either proceed to install iAtkos or reboot and run the Windows installer. Nice guide. But I have one question. When it says grab a copy of iAtkos 5i, does that mean to go ahead and install that onto the system? or do I use windows to do the partioning? Please help me with this. ebox86
... gave the installation a try yesterday. i decided to go the way titelio did ... thanks for the step-by-step instructions. unfortunately it didn't work for me my machine seems to be the same ... i7 920 - radeon hd 4850 - got the standart hd in it with Vista 64 and a 2nd SATA-HD which should be used exclusively for osx (partitions: Inter HD -> iAtkos install + Studio HD -> 10.5.7 install) so I do a listing with my stuff to locate what went wrong here, hope titelio or someone else could help.... 1 install iAtkos ( went fine ) 2. Install Leopard 10.5.6 and do not add any kext or pcefi or change any files. ( went fine - installation from an image) 3. Install the 10.5.7 upgrade. ( went fine, but which updater is better 2 use? combo-updater or the one from 10.5.6 ???) 4 Install these kexts: dsmos.kext intel82566MM.kext OpenHaltRestart.kext VoodooHDA.kext IOAHCIFamily.kext IOATAFamily.kext AppleAHCIPort.kext Osx86tools used for this. Download here: http://######.com/osx86tools/ ( went fine I guess ... I use Osx86tools and tell it to install the stuff on the Studio HD which has the virgin os 10.5.7 on it, right? After installing them all, I did a 'rights repair' on the Studio HD with 10.5.7 from 'disk utility' started in IAtkos) 5. Install Chameleon v2. Download here: http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,233.0.html ( went fine ... did the install on the Studio HD partition with 10.5.7) 6. Patch dsdt with DSDTPatcherGUI_1.0 2 Run and choose Darwin/Mac OS X and Apply DSDT Patch to: (Your installation disk or partition) and finally Run DSDT Patcher Click to view attachment Download here: http://######.com/index.php?option=...0&Itemid=48 ( went fine , as the installer shows ... did the install also on the Studio HD partition with 10.5.7) 7 Replacing com.apple.Boot.plist. from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration ( just copied that in the folder on the 10.5.7 HD and replaced the old one after puutting in my password) 8 Put smbios.plist in /Extra. Click to view attachment ( just created a folder 'Extra' on the 10.5.7 HD and put the file in) ( here I once again did a rights repair on on the 10.5.7 HD with "disk utility" ) 9 Install the last Natit.pkg for Ati 4850 graphics card. Download here: http://netkas.org/?p=101 ( in the first of my tries ... I installed the normal 'Natit pkg', on the 2nd and 3rd try I didn't do any natit install in the hope I can do that later in the proper booted 10.5.7 - or use the Natit for Quail.pkg ??? ) 10 Reboot and run bios setup. Enable all cores, Hyperthreading and choose mode ATA in Advanced Chipset Features. changed the stuff back in bios and ... didn't work out, got a kernel panic in all tries the best I got was 10.5.7 boot in safe mode (-x), but this only worked also with just 1 core aktivated and HT disabled. I guess I'm missing something really important? thankful for any help, hints or tips Well i am having problems too, but its at the beggining of titeleo's guide. I can install iAtkos as told by Yardie, then you say to install Leopard 10.5.6, so do you mean Update iAtkos to 10.5.6, or do you mean install a retail copy of 10.5.6 onto another partition? I think its the latter, but not sure. If so, have all the problems been worked out with titeleo's method, i.e. the problems associated with the poster to which i am quoting, or are people still not able to boot into 10.5.7 Any help would be much appreciated, thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/151117-guide-installing-leopard-on-dell-studio-xps-i7/page/5/#findComment-1179696 Share on other sites

The iAtkos install is a failsafe installation. Once it is installed and working you install the retail CD into another partition. On my PC I have 3 partitions (formerly 4) Macintosh HD[retail], iAtkos, and 300GB Data partition. I haven't updated to 10.5.7 since I haven't had the time nor the inclination. If you do have a problem with booting into 10.5.7 what you can do is put the voodookernel in the root and the System.kext in the S/L/E, modify the com.apple.Boot.plist to use the voodoo kernel.
