So, Windows 7 betas are now being scattered around the OSx86 and InsanelyMac community. I've gotten my hands on it, and so far, its pretty nice. The taskbar is somewhat different. The only drawbacks are that for one, I was forced to use Vista drivers, instead of my Dell Vostro 1400 XP disk. For two, you cannot upgrade from XP. It says that you must be on Vista SP1, or else you'll have to backup your internal HD, and do some partitioning. I've got Leopard, XP, and 7 tri-boot Windows 7 and Leopard dual-boot. So far, Leopard has no problems with Windows 7, XP is cooperating nicely, and 7 has adapted. In other words, Leopard and XP can access the 7 drive. Windows 7 can run programs from the XP drive. So, what're your thoughts on Windows 7?

I downloaded it and I like it. I think its what vista should have been. I've always been a hard core windows fan, but unfortunately, I'm still more impressed with leopard. So has the "Wow" started yet?

Wow list-

GUI-Yes

New Library Feature-Yes

Home Networking-Yes

No more than 2 versions-Well the wow started back when we had Home and Professional Editions, and then the Wow ended with Vista.

GPT/EFI Support-Yes

File Preview(Preview Pane)- HELL NO, it just clutters the explorer window!

Native Disk Image support- YES FINALLY

Driver Compatibility- Well as funny as it sounds, vista currently has good driver compatibility, and since 7 is based off of vista, then Yes, although, a lot of my USB networking devices did not work...

HFS+ FS Support- OK, jk, im getting carried away =P would be nice though...

Good pre installed programs(movie maker, DVD maker, photo gallery)- Yes, they're not super powerful, but they give the average user a nice set of tools to put together a nice looking project.

Fast boot up times- Eh, sure, I mean it boots in 25 secs for me, not bad...

New Taskbar- Not wow =P It doesnt make anything easier...

Well, those are the main things I can think of. I'm still not saying wow unless I'm using leopard... =\

I say Windows 7 is huge improvement over Vista.

I am a Linux fanboy and I have never really hung out much in Windows unless I needed it for my video games, but after installing 7 on my laptop I found myself choosing it over Linux when i would start up my computer!

Though I think its major downfall is that it still assumes that everyone using it is on a 1 track mind, meaning that their little window preview thing I think could be better if you could group windows together that you want to show instead of looking at each individual window. I use Compiz-Fusion in Linux and I can usually do just fine with 4 desktops but sometimes I need to stretch it to 5 because I am doing that much and being able to group windows together makes productivity sky rocket.

So over all I like everything else, they make it less cluttered which is very nice with the single icon for applications and the notification bar doesnt grow. So I say Microsoft is on the right track!

So far it feels like a very 'solid' release, a few thoughts....

- I want someone to write an Aero Snap clone for OS X :-)

- It managed to do one thing I couldn't get Vista to do on this machine despite two days of trying... play Halo 2

- Not nearly as many UI bugs as Vista SP1

- Feels much snappier and faster than XP and Vista - a VERY smooth GUI

- New 'Superbar' doesn't make sense in places (to my mind) and possibly suffers from a bit of 'featuritis' but on the whole it is in an improvement that can be refined.

- Far and away better hardware detection than it's two predecessors.

In short, its where Microsoft needed to be 3 years ago. It would have competed very well against OS X and the Linuxes (from a technical standpoint) - and it still will, but to a lesser degree I feel. Microsoft just arrived at the party Tiger and Dapper Drake left a while back... The true 'big' OS release of 2009 will be Snow Leopard :-)

Windows is one of those things, where you either love it, or hate it. Sometimes though, you think you hate it, but you're actually dependent on it (found that out about myself). But then, sometimes with OS X, once you use it, you hate to say goodbye to it (like switching from Mac OS X to Windows). That's also me. :P

Getting to the point...

I really think that Windows 7 is a nice leap/improvement from Vista. XP only had 3 versions, not counting third party modded versions (like XP Ultimate). Vista went too far, with how many? 5 versions? Plus, they crapped it up with security and compatibility. As for Windows 7, its predicted to have only 3. Vista-like GUI, but the taskbar is more compact, in my opinion. The only "down" is that I can't use the drivers on the Dell Drivers and Utilities disk, since they were intended for XP. Instead, I had to go to Dell.com support and get drivers there. Otherwise, I haven't seen any other compatibility issues (I have yet to try WindowBlinds. I totally agree with you, Embio, Snow Leopard will be the major release of 2009. Hopefully, the OSx86 community will start cranking out 10.6 .iso's soon.

I just installed W7, there is fews minutes... First impressions: looks like Vista.. Ok. the organistaion of differents parts of the OS (configuration panel, network, display etc etc..) it also noisy than others windows.. Ok.. and I found a things called "windows media center". wouaw, I never heard talking about that... What is it?? clic.. open, and.. oh.. we can see pictures/movies/music etc.. but.... hummm it looks like something I know...hummm. what is it..ah I can't remenber.. oh! FRONT ROW.. pffffffff.... pathetic.

ok, it is just several minutes I running it, but..pffff it is only a windows.

sorry, may be I'm not objective..

I personally quite like Windows 7 compared to Vista, despite the one glaring annoyance of having my laptop seize up if left to idle for a few hours. Media centre isn't any different than it was in Vista or XP MCE (look back a little Le-Bebop, it's been around :D ). It's no OS X, but I kind of need wifi and sound working to do anything, something OSx86 doesn't do (yet)

Yeah, Windows is trying to become Mac OS X in many pathetic ways. First thing I noticed with Vista: the "Users" folder. Then, with Windows 7, I was watching a movie with Windows Media Player, and that really reminded me of Front Row. Why doesn't Microsoft just confess, its trying to copy Apple (in some ways). Microsoft should just get permission from Apple to PORT Front Row to Windows, just like QuickTime and iTunes. My friend said "The reason why you use Windows is because of it's originality." Well, some of this is true. Some people who use Windows add OS X themes, dock, etc. because they want Windows to be more like OS X. And yes, first impression: looks quite a bit like Vista.

Media Center was around well before Front Row. It was released in 2002 as part of Windows XP Media Center Edition

Early indications running the 64 bit version is "this is what MS should have released 3 years ago"

It seems a stable, reasonably light, fast, (dare I say it) intuitive operating system.

Unfortunately for MS IMO they have only caught up with Tiger, and I remain to be convinced that the security will be better than in previous versoins.

  • 2 weeks later...

Came from XP, not Vista so....

I like the eye candy, very easy to install .. found all my drivers automatically except ICH10 ... task bar preview when mouse hovers over icon, fast, network setup for dummies, runs most programs I've tried

Don't like the network setup for dummies .... can't see my XP or Mac computers after may days of trying ^_^ , UAC ... "I thought I was the admin" , slower than XP when burning ISOs

I've been using Windows 7 off and on for about two weeks really. I'm running it on a macbook through Parallels 4. Having tried Vista this way, I can say this version of Windows is so much better. The Macbook doesn't sound like an A380 powering up for takeoff nor does it bring it to its knees... it's relatively zippy, stable, and not so ugly. This is what Vista should have been when it was released way back when. Apple fan boys can sleep soundly. Windows 7 is, well, still Windows. Still, we should be rooting for Redmond's success. If necessity is the mother of invention, we need serious contenders to spur competition and innovation. Remember those dark ages when there was only one serious PC operating system? That was a big YAWN! A slick version of Windows will drive innovation in Linux and OS X... and as we have seen, the reverse is also true!

When it comes to starting the photocopiers, I just hope there's something worth copying. *keeps fingers crossed*
