gb fiber rocks for sure but they are not really the first, are they? thougth the asians (taiwan maybe, im not sure) have done this before

it's now my dream city to live.

you have never been there right?

on my first adam visit i arrived about 5:30am by train, first thing i saw was a man taking a {censored} in the middel of train station building with a whyskey bottle in his hand.

second thing was a men persuing an other, it seems he got his purse stolen by him

walking trogh the city you wont find a single bush without at least one empty handbag or backpack in it. heroin and crack addicts everywhere begging for money and cigarrets.

it's fun for a few days, but living in a place like this isn't what i want

Just a note that I've spent quite a bit of time in Amsterdam, and although it can be abrasive and nasty in the center, particularly in tourist season, there are far worse cities in Europe, with higher crime rates & worse drug problems. The central station is often the worst part of any city, as newly-arrived strangers/foreigners often sleepy & with no idea of where they are, make easy targets.

As for Gbit fibre, that has to be tempting.. I can get 100mbit here where I am, but it's still too expensive for me to contemplate. A quick scan of the story linked above didn't reveal any prices....

I lived there for 4 years; is a quite peacefull place. You make it sound like a lost city!

I wonder what you would say about places like Sao Paulo or Buenos Aires....

Exactly. I lived there for almost 5 years and I loved it. It was a long time ago, however.

Also, Amsterdam isn't just the city center, it is a huge place, and some areas are really nice. I lived in Amsterdam-North.

For those who understand Dutch (but everybody can watch the picture), this is where I lived:

The building was one of the ugliest in the area, but the area itself was beautiful, minutes walking from the (then) largest shopping centre in the Netherlands (Boven 't IJ)

This is not uncommon in any inner city or big town.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree with that. Welcome to any city, seriously, especially in the tourist area where these people know that people coming in are rich.

I have never been to Amsterdam but hope to someday because my grandfather was born there.

Crime is in every city in the world some worse then others, hell I've been in parts of NY that even warring full body armor and carrying an AK-47 I would still not feel safe.

Even in my own city we have bad areas of the city. For a time I lived a few doors down from a housing complex that had cops coming and going so much that we joked saying they should setup a police station there.

Back to topic:

It's too bad that North America is so far behind in data speeds with the majority of users still using connections of 5Mbps or less. Even with Verizon's FiOS fiber connection it pails in comparison to what is happening over seas, it tops out at only 50Mbps. If you want a 100Mbps connection or better you have to be Bill Gates to afford it. The problem here is corporate greed, they make billions in net profits but spend very little into upgrading their networks. If they don't start updating the networks North America will become the 3rd world of the internet.

It's good to read they're already experimenting with it in Amsterdam. I live in Eindhoven, more to the south, and while I'm currently pretty satisfied with my 20mbps ADSL2+ connection, in a few months I'll be connected to a full-duplex 100mbps FUP fiber connection for about 40 euros a month. ;)

When the 100mbps connections are fully rolled out, it probably won't be much trouble to upgrade it to 1gbps in the future. But I think 100mbps will be more than enough for the upcoming years. :P

Congratulations! You managed to find a brand new discrimination, something the Dutch are quite good at :D

Better in discriminating then people do in other countries? Just wondering...I dunno but thats not good then.

We don't have a very good name already when it comes to drugs and porn (yeah, for some it sounds like heaven).

While Holland is so beautiful country. I admit it's not getting better last 10 years.

My personal experience is not very positive. I was appalled how badly black people were discriminated against (I didn't find the same level of discrimination in England). Discrimination of white, non-Dutch Europeans was pretty bad too (please notice that I look like many Dutch people and that I could speak Dutch fluently, if anything with a southern accent).

It's just Dutch Humor ;P Holland is Small but VERY Diverse. The Randstat area is The Loop of Amsterdam, to Utrecht, to Rotterdam, and back to Den Haag. In this area people are mostly VERY tolerant and speak fluent English. Most Dutch people live in this area. To the north you have the Frieslanders, who need to learn to speak Dutch (this is a joke) ;P Also we have the Dutch people who live on the German Border, who have taken on a lot of the German Language and Culture. Don't worry though they will still argue of the last penny on a bill ;P

Mostly when it comes to discrimination in Holland it's against Moroccans and Turks. The Muslim population. There is a lot of bad blood involved in that and it's a powder keg that has yet to FULLY explode. Outside that you have the people of Suriname which Dutch people see as thieves and crooks. Though they often get a fairer shake of it then the Muslims do.

Most of Holland is very wonderful, and pretty. Filled with great people who have much pride in what they have built. Sometimes the dutch CAN be a little cheap ;P and thick headed. Overall they are a great people *except the pensioners who have nothing better to do then COMPLAIN about everything YOU do* ;P

Having spent 5 years of my life in Amsterdam, I know about the Randstat

I agree, generally speaking. I just found that the much celebrated "Dutch tolerance" wasn't entirely true.
