Amsterdam Tests Residential 1Gbps Fiber

Dundee in Scotland is getting residential 100mb broadband within the next year or so. The UK's second "Fibe City" is gonna be Dundee. That's where i'm moving *hopefully*

1gb broadband is available everywhere but not publicly, only for businesses and such. 100mb broadband will do me for now, but I don't see why they don't just roll out the best fibre available, instead of bumping up the speed every few years or so. Laying down more cable and spending more money :)

The most available in Italy, in a few, selected places, is 20mb. Else it is 7 or 8mb.

But there are still many places which have no broadband at all.

It's like that in the UK too, except everywhere has broadband. We get 1-8meg broadband everywhere, through the phonelines. And places that are able to get cable tv can get 20meg. But now the UK is going Fibre meaning we'll get 100meg -1gb broadband next. It'll be the same for italy. Expect it to happen worldwide in the next 2-5 years.

I've allready started to pack my bags. :( Amsterdam, here I come! Please save a room for me in the area covered by Netcity! Weed + gigabit, that's the combination!

Imagine downloading tens of thousands of gigabytes of full hd porn. :D

Question one: where can I buy an exabyte hdd?

Question two: how many exabytes does the whole net have? I might find it simplier to download the net and take it with me in my trips.

Amsterdam not only has one of the busiest global Internet exchanges, but consumers also see some fantastic speeds in a city that increasingly treats broadband like a utility. Cable operators have been testing 120Mbps pre-certification DOCSIS 3.0 speeds, the city was the first in Europe to see Wireless WiMax, and they're also deploying municipal fiber thanks to private investment funds and an organization named CityNet. Cooperatively with Netherlands carriers GNA, BBned, and InterNLnet, the outfit has just concluded a 3-day test of 1Gbps connectivity for residential consumers over their network.

I have never been to Amsterdam but hope to someday because my grandfather was born there.

Crime is in every city in the world some worse then others, hell I've been in parts of NY that even warring full body armor and carrying an AK-47 I would still not feel safe.

Even in my own city we have bad areas of the city. For a time I lived a few doors down from a housing complex that had cops coming and going so much that we joked saying they should setup a police station there.

It's too bad that North America is so far behind in data speeds with the majority of users still using connections of 5Mbps or less. Even with Verizon's FiOS fiber connection it pails in comparison to what is happening over seas, it tops out at only 50Mbps. If you want a 100Mbps connection or better you have to be Bill Gates to afford it. The problem here is corporate greed, they make billions in net profits but spend very little into upgrading their networks. If they don't start updating the networks North America will become the 3rd world of the internet.

Hmm i have 20mbit, could have more 50-100mbit for more money. Also North America has the fastest average speed in the world... http://www.speedtest.net/global.php

Gotta love when people post lies/opinions as facts. Well i know its just misinformation they have gotten but still the ignorant feeding the ignorant.

You just proved what I was saying why should I be paying $40 for 5Mbps when someone over seas is paying the same for a 100Mbps. You want more speed here you pay the corporate greed machine.

Also North America has the fastest average speed in the world...

WoW! North America has a huge whopping lead of 100K over Europe. That lead will be gone in no time when you look at internet growth rates. From 2000 to 2007 North America only seen 119.4% growth while the rest of the world seen a growth rate of 305.3%

I never stated what I was saying was fact it was simply an observation of the news story's I have read. When you read about some new high speed network being installed or tested it ain't being tried in North America.

You call me ignorant when you base your facts on Speedtest.net try visiting a few tech news sites or business sites.
