Hi,

For the Mini9-132EZ method, do we need to use some particular version and localization of the retail DVD?

In Germany, Apple offers only 10.5.4 Deutsch and several online stores offer additionally 10.5.4 International English. I don't know if this International English version is identical to the US version.

Should I worry about some potential incompatibiltiy with the MIni9-132EZ CD?

If I buy one and it doesn't work, it will be dissapointing.

Maybe, this is a stupid question. But I have had some a few bad experiences with some localized OS. So I wanted to ask you this question.

Thanks.

i honestly don't know. I know bertlmike did his install localized for german, but ii don't know that he did it from a version for german-speaking countries.

I can't think of any reason why this wouldn't work; the important bit is that it isn't a leopard designed for a specific piece of hardware, or an updater...tho I am told that if you have one of these, there is a way to modify it so it installs on anything...

Is there any way to install leopard on a SD card and boot off that instead of the ssd.

Yes, if you have a USB SD card adapter, no problem. If you mean the internal SD slot, refer to the earlier dozen posts regarding what doesn't work under OSX.. The internal SD slot does not work with OSX.

which brings me to a wacky, wacky thought about the sleep issue, and a hacky, hacky workaround:

What if we were to actually install the OS on one of them teeny tiny itsy-bitsy lil 8gb usd flash thingees instead of the ssd.

i wonder if it would hang waking from sleep then...

you know, unmount the ssd, sleep, bring 'er back up...

I wish i had one of the damned things...i'd try it now.

I already do this on a 8gb USB flash drive.. it still hangs.. and takes a while to load up. But otherwise works like normal.

really now...

This IS an interesting development, then.

I have been wondering a couple of things...

like if we're emulating/hiijacking an efi environment, like why do we have other {censored} in there...

ON booth, the kernel is complaining about the mixed status of the platform specifiers, etc

Im gonna reboot my mbp and tak a look at the dmesg logs from boot...

Installation off of an original retail DVD (10.5.0), bought here in Austria, worked just fine. To be honest, I don't think Apple localizes its DVD (except for documentation) - any Mac OS DVD I've seen, contained several language packs (including English and German). So you should be fine either way!

This was of interest to me and I made the iso with the mods they mention but on the mini 9 after loading a bunch of stuff it gets a BSOD

bummer wanted a nice xp install in my usb key

did you use the drivers off the dell xp install disc when you created your iso? i remember making one for a system ages ago that BSOD'd but using the files from my "restore" disc worked.

mental note to self when you decide to try something new on your dell mini make a good backup first!!

i am attempting to try and slipstream 10.5.1 into 10.5.5 with all patches from apple along with the iso from darkten to minimise the time rebuilding it (i swear i trash it every few days trying to fix problems..... it's a challenge!)

Has anyone installed OS X successfully via the Mini9-132EZ method without an external DVD drive? I am looking to get a Dell Inspiron Mini 9, but I do not wish to get a DVD drive. What are my options? Will a generic thumbdrive suffice? What about a USB hard disk?

Apologies if this has been answered. I skimmed through the entire thread and have not came across a conclusive answer on using the method described in #346 without using a DVD drive.

Thanks.
I see no reason why it would not.

BTW...Time Machine restore was a success! I love this lil' thing
There is a way to image the OS X DVD onto a bootable USB HDD, but it requires that you already have a Mac up and running. I'm not sure anyone's confirmed it to work with darkten's iso, but I think it should.

Here's one tutorial, but if you search for "install OS X from USB" you're sure to find many others:

You boot up from the cd, insert leo dvd, pick Restore from Utilities menu. After restore, boot up from cd, pick HD, install chameleon again.

Right now, i'm trying to figure out which freakin' kext is messing with the shutdown; it is really irritating me now :)

as always, aim chatroom mini9osxftw.

Much faster asking and answering quick questions than this store-and-forward forum format :)

But if you ask it on here.. everyone can see the answer so we don't have a million ppl asking u the same question. :)

darkten I found if you remove aclinject and applehda audio the shutdown kp goes away but so does sound. YMMV

the cool thing about the efi partition method for those with some know how is that you don't even have to install chameleon again after TM restore I just did a time machine restore and rebooted, done. Pretty freaking cool if you ask me try and do that on a wind or one!

Just wanted to share some ways that I have freed up some space on this tiny hard drive!

Delete extra printers

StripPPC (as posted earlier in this thread)

Monolingual app

AND THE BIG ONE!

Change hibernation settings to zero by issuing this command and then removing the file:

sudo pmset hibernatemode 0

sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage

(saved 2 gigs on mine - the size of my available ram) :(

Thanks again for everyones hard work! This thing is awesome!

I think we need another "Plan B" :D

I wonder if there is a way to automate this somewhat; I bet we could do this, because Disk Util always makes a 200MB EFI partition when you format...

The content that would go on this boot partition is already there anyway; in fact, once scripted up, it could be added to the postinstinstall for the dfe-mini9 variant i made.

the downside of this is testing; it is more convienient while we work out what is optimal to have stuff in /Extra...

You game, buddy? :) We did pretty good last time around :(

I don't know if any one is having as hard a time as me or not... But I cannot get osx to install no matter what I do... Whether I burn the cd boot it off a drive or whatnot. It always fails to validate or says error and than fails. Even if it is the iAtkos, Kaly, iDeneb... :D I just want to see it boot once and I'll be happy. I've checksum'd all the files and they are fin and I burn dvd's at lowest speed... Any suggestions?

Plus anyone know how to mount a NTFS usb drive? It says error but it is recognized but won't mount.

....I have problems. :hysterical:
