I have just reported 2 spammers (maybe one with 2 different nicks).

How do they do that? Very simple. They join the forum, then they can see at the bottom of the forum if there is any mod on duty. If there isn't any, they strike.

In most cases they will enjoy a few hours of free advertisement at the expenses of Fubra.

(I hate spammers of any kind, BTW. They are a plague).

Edit: I reported a third spammer.

On my forum I moderate all new members until they have made at least 10 posts. This has stopped 99.9% of spam on my site as the mods handle the situation very well. I hate spammers with a passion and will not say what I would like to do with them if I ever got ahold of one. I can tell you it involves a Pitbull and some steak.......

;)

I also hate spammers with a passion. In this silly country (Italy) spammers can also be large companies. Our largest telephone company (Telecom Italia) used to phone my mother and myself several times a week asking to go back with them full-time. I don't know if they have temporarily stopped because of the summer holidays.

And what annoys me most is that my number is actually unlisted.

Edit: I have just read with horror that Italian users are tormented by British Telecom:

http://www.onemobile.it/11/04/2007/british...uale-in-italia/ (for those who understand Italian).

But I don't believe British Telecom does anything like that in Britain, for instance to cable users. At least not when I lived there.

British telecom doesnt, but vodafone, O2 and Virgin spam me all the time... Them with their Indian call centres keep calling me out of the blue asking bout my phone usage and how Id love their phone packages O_O all i do now is hang up as soon as i realise its from a call centre...

and the worst part, these guys pretend to me british! i once asked one wht his name was; the guy says his name is Scott... Now if you can show me ONE indian with the name scott, ill buy you a macbook air! and thats not all though, i keep going and ask where he is from and apparantly, he is from London! fancy that! A call centre in London with an indian guy named scott! :)

PS: Im bengali, so yeah, Im allowed to diss indians and not be racist :P

Now if you can show me ONE indian with the name scott, ill buy you a macbook air!

I just had to try!

Anyway, the idea of moderation of the noob users sounds great, but to not put to much strain, just the first post they post should be necessary, and any further posts will not be possible beofre the first is apporoved. It would solve a few other problems on this board as well...

Just like to say thanks for reporting this stuff, without that we'd have a hell of a time finding all the spammers.

Always glad when I can help.

Usually if a telemarketer calls me I'll either Rick Roll them or whip out the Tourettes Guy soundboard for them to have a nice convorsation with. :)

:D

There is actually one thing you can do. Most modern telephone sets (but the cheapest ones) have anonymous caller filter (meaning that the phone doesn't ring). Some phone companies have anonymous caller rejection, as most spammers will use an unlisted phone number.

My problem with that would be that my best friend has an unlisted number as well, but there are ways around.

I just had to try!

I think that this is true:a few days ago I saw a spammer when no global mod or admin was online (plague).

From what I understand, some of these "spammers" may be automated botnet registrations and posts, and may be originating from someone's Trojan infected machine. The guy/gal probably has no clue that his or her computer and possibly internet connection has been hijacked. While I don't hate Windows or Vista and as much as I hate to say it, the majority of hijacked/botnet controlled computers are running Windows.

Well people using Windows getting infected and posting spams unknowingly may be the reason, but nowadays most forum registrations require an image verification to keep out these pests. As far as I remember even our forum has also got one, isn't it? Hence, the best way probably is to start recording IPs and permanently banning them thereafter.

The sad part is that the bot programs are getting better and better at "reading" CAPTCHA images. I've seen these things marketed as "advertising tools" with things like CAPTCHA bypass listed as features.

Yeah, if the CAPTCHA isn't complicated, say like plain numbers or Times New Roman letters, bots can easily use OCR technology (optical character recognition) to determine the CAPTCHA code. This is why Rapidshare went with its ridiculous housecat verification system :|

The retarded thing is that if there's a code for the image to coincide with what has to be typed in, then there's a code they can hack. It's retarded.
