EDIT: Update done, running 10.5.4 :D and you can do the usb thing in vmware (i did it), but maybe everyone knew it allready...

Just one other thing, the usb is not quicker thant the cd, is that normal? i get 4 lines of points before it boots (btw i used the generic iso, maybe that's why)

 

yes i was expect more fast too.. :) but i like it anyway

 

Yes .. the generic one is slower.. If you create a specialized one with only the kexts needed for your system it will be quite faster..

Yep.. at least I think so.. havent tested it yet...but I think if you put it on the cd/stick with the same path:Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plistIt should work..Or you can change the ISOLINUX.CFG

Anyone tried it on AMD?

 

What patches are needed to make it work on AMD machines?

Exactly.. That was actually what I ment.. that you had to rezise the inird.img.- mine is only 2 mb and only makes a few dots before booting..I should have been more specific about that..
Ok i understand that, but isn't it possible to add a other kernel, just like adding kext's to the boot cd?

For AMD systemz is more easy use some patched versions. But I do some research about this case.

I have found that depending on the version of the kext you have on your CDBOOT/USB, you either have to use -f to force the reading of the kexts from the CDBOOT/USB or

you have to remove the offending kext on the HDD and only use the one on the CDBOOT/USB or

you replace the files on the HDD with those in the initrd.img that is on the CDBOOT/USB!

-f = Tells the machine to reload all kext and dump the boot configuration cache, (kext cache found in: /System/Library/Extensions.mkext, you can delete it manually and the system will recreate it).

Maybe.....

 

I loaded The Retail DVD onto a USB drive which I made bootable with Chameleon, here I modded it by adding my AppleAHCIPort.kext into the Extensions directory, I removed the mkexts and booted from it

I then did an install of 10.5. I then used my other usbpendrive with CDBOOT and my kexts on to reboot the system and do an upgrade to 10.5.4, removed all the un-needed kexts and replaced them with those on my USBStick and ran Chameleon to get it bootable without the CDBOOT.

 

Maybe this will help if you were thinking of using AMD but cannot alter the DVD, maybe you can alter the install DVD on a external HDD?

I think for AMD not work. Need change tsc_init on kernel to run on AMD systemz, and can't load modded kernel from CDBoot to load Vanilla DVD.

 

For sure, on AMD systemz, use a pre-patched versions, or, buy a Intel-based PC (Processor+Chipset 945 or newer version.)

I fixed my little problem everything is running 100% perfect upto yet thanks every one for the help :wacko:

 

SO what was causing the -f boot option? Was it the mkext cache or whatya do?

I just Copied all the kexts that was on my cd and and put them on to my HD and boots up fine after

can I install kalyway dvd with this bootloader? it's because I don't have an original leopard dvd (and if I download it, I need a DL dvd..) thanks

 

No! It'n only for Original DVD. Patched versions doesn't need this method.

Can i add my efi string to apple.boot.pist ?
