So I was over at Compusa today and these jokers told me they could get me a Macbook Pro in my hands by no later than this friday (3/10/06). I spoke to several people there all of whom reassured me that Friday would be pushing it, and that it would likely get here sooner! The rolling-my-eyes-now backstory to why Compusa could get these babies faster than anyone else on the planet was some garbage about how they had pieces waiting at a distribution center that were already on their way--something I might have believed if they had asked me to put my name down on a waitlist instead of taking my credit card details.

I know Compusa guys are about as reliable as snow on Christmas Day, but I just wanted to see if anyone else had this experience with any other resellers (or perhaps even Compusa?). I'm home for spring break and literally can't wait to get a hold of this beauty, but that ETA sounds like it came out of someone's backside.

Your thoughts and opinions fellow netizens.

Well..I just got off the phone with the head of the business department at Compusa and he told me it may even be here on Friday! Maybe these guys do know what they're talking about.

Did I miss the "rush for the MBP"? What's going on here? One week I call in and everybody's sold out...the next week I can get my hands on one in 2 days?!

Sweet :P

Mash, they're notorious for not knowing their stuff, but thinking that they do. I've only encountered 1 solid Compusa guy, and he wasn't working the sales end, he was working in the "Geek Squad" equivalent for Compusa.

In any case, latest ETA is actually either tomorrow or thursday now. I'll take some pics and provide a detailed review.

Lol - yes, Mash, like I said in another post, you have to fail the intelligence test to get a job there...

I have enormous fun with the 'experts' in that chain when I'm travelling. I like to browse computer gear, but salesmen rapidly appear because I'm a girl and they think I'm probably stupid (I am blonde after all) and must be ripe for a quick sell. So I let them tell me all the bollocks about 200GB of RAM* (!) and I ask them questions about whether it will do this, or that... Then I smile sweetly and tie them in verbal knots, usually resulting in them trying to get a supervisor or manager to dig them out. I can't do it in my local store any more because they all know me now. :hysterical:

I've saved countless innocent families from buying something really unsuitable by jumping in when I've overheard a salesman trying to push something on them that isn't what they want. I almost feel it's my duty. Compusa is really bad for that. At least Circuit City usually has a geek on the staff.

* So many chain stores have sales staff who don't know the difference between memory and hard disk... If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.

Heh...I'd be standing right there in line with you Suleiman, if I had the money, that is. Personally, I'm waiting to see what they do with the iBooks. It'll probably be a little closer to what I can afford ATM. On the flip-side, probably not as powerful for what I plan to use it for. :D

I wandered into my local Apple store today while I was waiting for Sears to find something I'd ordered. OMG, I'd thought the staff in Apple were intelligent -

Geek: "blah blah and of course it goes 4x faster then the previous model"

Sarah: "What about applications that aren't ported yet? Photoshop for example?"

Geek: "That's fine too, it runs 4x faster. This machine's got two processors, see."

Sarah: "Doesn't it rely on Rosetta then?"

Geek: "Rosetta? Oh, that was something the pre-release models had. No, it's all Intel now..."

I take back what I said about Compusa. They're obviously genius grade compared to Apple.

I still say Compusa is the worst. My local Compusa, you walk in and say the word Mac and people look at you like your speaking a foreign language. I try to stay away from sales associates. And when one does walk up, I just work the lingo over, and say "Yea, don't try to help me. Thanks." I know, kinda rude, but damnit they should atleast higher intelligent people or give them some training.

That is absolutely brutal Metrogirl....kind of like what I mentioned in my other news post. I'm especially laughing at the "Rosetta-was-only-pre-release" part. :hysterical:
