very interesting post, I will follow it with a big attention.
I have an Asus F3Ja too and I hope we can resolve this problem.
I'll search in my own way and share to the community if I find something helpful.
See you!

The ASUS F3JA has QE/CI without any modification on 10.4.8 but it has slight mouse tearing issues and non-native resolution (1024x768). These are the reasons why I want to get I want to get ATIinject working with my laptop. I think it is a problem with the EDID data as to why my screen shows four mini desktops with ATIinject. I get the feeling that the display is trying to output 2560x1600, hence the four 1280x800 desktops. If I understood EDID data and was confident, I would try to edit the string to output correctly. Here is my data:-

The only difference between our EDID data is the 111th byte, which is A0 in yours and 20 in mine. This could be as simple as a reference to the panel manufacture date.

okay fellas got it working!!!
used JAS 10.4.8 + ATINDRV.kext + IONDRVSupport.kext from the older JAS 10.4.5 DVD
entered my EDID in info.plist and info2.plist repaired permissions etc and.... got QE/CI res changed and all the stuff fully working
nice to have 1600*1050 on the internal display finally
cheers

Please give exact instructions, kexts, versions, plist edits, and exact hardware. You may be able to solve a problem for many, myself included.

The 10.4.5 IONDRVSupport.kext can be extracted from the 10.4.5 Intel Update on the aPPLE website. I have not had time to mess around with this recently, but I have got Ubuntu running sweetly with XGL and Beryl. Ubuntu kills OSX! I haven't given up on getting 1280x800 with QECI and no mouse issues.

okay for everybody here are my used kexts...
u only have to enter ur EDID into the info.plist in the ATIinject.kext with Apples Plist Editor (from Genius bar)
repair permissions
chown and chmod ATIinject.kext (u should know how 2 do this
)
reboot and enjoy full res, QE/CI...
only one issue is left: as soon as you close the lid and reopen the image is garbage and u have to reboot the machine...
cheers

I correctly entered my EDID but I will retry the operation, I don't verified the vendor ID and device ID.
I used the Repair___Set_Permissions_1.0 tools to repair permissions.
We're on the way.
See you soon,
Thibault

SUCCESS!!!!! Many months of trying, kexts, injectors, EDIDs, bios settings...
FireGL5200 256 MB 71c4 ThinkPad T60p 1400x1050
This gives me hardware mouse, Switching into OpenGL doesn't "shatter" it all over the screen...
I can change the display brightness and calibrate it. It shows my two displays.
better performance xbench
Two issues:
1. I get a bios security error upon coming out of sleep? Is this a kernel, bios, or driver issue? (TPM is disabled on my device), or type of sleep setting.
2. Some displayed resolutions, like 680x680 create a black screen necessitating a clearing of all reslution files /preferences/byhost

I tried it again with PList Editor. I copy/paste my EDID data and it modified it as it wants ! I think it doesn't saved my modified Info.plist. With this, I get the screen cut in four part, each part was bigger than the last time... perhaps I'm on the good way..
I tried next with textedit, and I get a wonderfull blackscreen.
I will try again and again until it works !!!

I'm sorry for the stuck progress, but I'm writing exams right know and will be finished in february. Last week, I also bad-flashed my A8JP while trying to change X1700 BIOS to X1600. We'll see what happens if I get it back.
I'll do my best, to find an "universal"-mobility-solution for X17xx/X16xx soon.
