non sequitur
From Slashdot: "It appears that Apple's woes with the new MacBook line continue as there have been reports on the forum that the finish on the new MacBook is flaking off or turning yellow. An article on Daily Tech summarizes the report saying: 'Some users have reported the palm rest area, touchpad and mousepad of their new white MacBooks has begun to discolor.' It goes on to say that 'some users on the Apple support forums are reporting moderate to severe discoloration near the palm rest and other locations of their new white MacBooks. At least one user has posted images of the problem to Flickr.' Is this a case of just dirty hands or could it be another problem in Apple's new Intel saga?" Wow, these new intel macs have really had a lot of problems. Macbook Pros overheat and whine and Macbooks discolor and flake. if i had to guess why this was happening, i think it is the sweat and the body oils from the hands of the owner that go around where they rest their wrists while typing. Sabr
Well, from those pictures, you can see it is the area where your hands/wrists rest, so, I would assume it is related to that...
quietglow
I am as guilty of this as anyone, I know, but the truth is that mac people tend to have a very short memory as far as problems with macs go. Just in portables alone, there have been some MAJOR apple hardware problems over the years. Anyone else have a TiBook that started sheding white paint after a couple of weeks? Apple also identified that as cosmetic, and didn't do anything about it, though clearly the wear started WAY too soon on many machines. What about the Wallstreet hinge problem? I saw carefully used Wallstreets blowing out hinges after 6 months. Imagine the screen of your $2700 laptop (cause that was the base price) falling off after 6 months of nice use, knowing a zillion others were having the same problem, and Apple never acknowledging it was a hardware flaw. That sucked.

kernalzero
It's not just an apple problem. I have a dell laptop and the palm rests on it discolored with time. The silverish colored paint wore down to the grey plastic base color with use (I use it alot I guess). I do agree it sucks and I'm holding off until the next generation of intel cores starts shipping in the macbooks before I run out and get one...hopefully by then the cosmetic and early bugs will be taken care of. domino
Well if that's the case, it would be due to acid. It could be more of an issue if someone sues because Apple and Dell switched over to some other kind of paint that cause someone to break out and have allergic reactions. I have sensitive skin . gwprod12
That's very common on laptops that receive heavy usage. However, It takes me at least 3 months to get to that point on my laptops, and I'm a whore for laptop usage.

Believe it not, that's considered hacking . I don't know about the plastic shielding. My plastic shield on my PDA is invaluable. The only problem I see using it on a wider surface is that it collects grime, scum, dirt around it's corners and edges. I don't think it looks very pleasing on a 2 grand piece of machinery. hmm, you can always ware gloves?
kernalzero
did anything else ever come of this problem? did apple address it, did it just go away?!?
shadowmoses
I have had mine since launch and have not noticed anything yet in terms of staining, only problem with mine is that it gets mighty hot and the track-pad button creaks, I'm not returning or complaining to Apple for now but if the track-pad gets worse and there isn't a firmware fix for the heat issue soon I will get in touch with Applecare... Otherwise its an amazing laptop outstanding build quality, performance and price in my opinion.... ShadoW

John the Geek
did anything else ever come of this problem? did apple address it, did it just go away?!? Apple fixed the discoloration problem by modifying the plastic involved. Unless you buy one that's been on a shelf for a while you'll get one that's already fixed. Zilker Park Hippee
Just got my MacBook Pro (it rocks for the most part!) and promptly put TiArmor on to protect the paint. It was on my TiBook and not only did it keep the thing in great shape...it was also nicer to the touch. Very thin, but, kind of gel-like. Should solve the MacBook problem, also. The only complaint I have with my MBP is that it seems hard to wake up, sometimes. Cheers

i1sam
Why not try also this accessory, i did... not just it solve the discolorization but also it protects foreign/minutes objects from entering below the keypad openings http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=22407
kevin_4e
I have yet to see any discoloration in my black macbook. I do keep it very clean though. Looks like the original pictures of the discoloring MB had a very dirty user. It's like a brown almost.
