x86 Tweak: Optimize CS2

Swad

Got the PPC Photoshop CS2 blues? Ya know the feeling, watching in anguish as the beachball of death spins endlessly while trying to apply a filter. If this is you, we’ve got good news and mediocre news.

The mediocre news is that while Adobe spoke out about universal binaries last week, they still gave no timetable for getting a universal Photoshop or Illustrator. It’s still looking like late 2006 or early 2007.

The better news is that you can do something about it in the meantime. MacWorld has an article detailing some ways to optimize CS2 and while the article isn’t geared specifically for Intel OS X users, we can still glean some good information.

We recommend playing around with your cache levels (since your shiny new MacBook messed around with your other cash levels…) and tweaking your RAM allocation. There’s no magic number so you’ll need to determine what your machine can best handle.

In the end, though, you should notice some increased speeds and decreased BBOD.

Have a few more tweaks? Let us know here!

I have another good idea:

Why spend 400megs of HDD-place and waiting 5 minutes for a program to start up that costs about 999,-?

This little Universal Binary here can read, write and edit psd's and all the other formats, too:

Also you can handle animated gifs and vector-stuff. I love these small, fast companies ;)

Downside: Does not look that stylo as Photoshop does, but it is easy to use if you know photoshop.

That is one great program, amazing for 59 Euro! I downloaded it and tried the demo, and as a seasoned Photoshop user I had no trouble finding my way around. I can't find much wrong with it as an advanced image editor and it's lean, fast and efficient, a good solution for basic work with psd files. Most importantly I was able to work on a Photoshop image and re-import it into Adobe without any issue. Good find!

Thanks for the link, I'll have to try it. :hysterical: Looks good since I'm used to Photoshop workflow.

Gimp also has a unibin you can find now if that floats your boat, but I'm too ingrained in Photoshop to manage the Gimp too well.

that application is awesome! everyone should spread it around so adobe can feel threatened from competition. everyone gains from competition (especially and more importantly the consumer) as the past has shown us.

thanks for this!

Whatever the application is that you try to run, you should seriously consider improving the process priorities by using the terminal command 'renice', or by using software such as 'App Stop' (which allows you completely halt other applications). Also, you may want to not run many, or any, other applications at the same time.

Xtraa : brilliant find! Running the unibin here, starts fast, runs fast. Perfect for quick "shrink for web" type jobs. I think I'll be buying a licence for this, to keep me going until Photoshop CS3.

Love software like this. That is the only good thing about the windows scene, you get bits of shareware like Breezebrowser and Qimage etc. Hopefully, as more people get into their Mac/x86 we'll see lots more software like this springing up.

PhotoLine definately takes some air out of Ps for the average user like myself. This app is perfect for just resizing, retouching, and save for web. Nice find xtraa. This is another recomendation to the smaller clients I have.

I'm even more impressed with the program now - I planted some Photoshop filters directly in the program plug-in directory and they work perfectly. Now that is really good! You can simply path your PS plug-ins directory, but I didn't want to do that initially in case the thing crashed. In fact it doesn't crash, even with some older filters over which Photoshop CS stumbles.

Like Cyrana, I don't get on well with GIMP just because it's foreign to my Photoshop experience. This program is really great and I'll certainly be recommending it to people I know who can't afford Photoshop and who don't want to run pirate software.

On a moralistic note I was quite disappointed to see that there are dozens of keygens and cracks for PhotoLine32. Normally I'm amused to see keygens for commercial programs - sticking it to the big companies who charge too much has a certain cavalier glory for some people - but this is different. Photoline32 is an outstanding program from a small outfit which is doing a fantastic job. I feel sad that their extremely reasonable price is being compromised by the hackers. So if you like it and use it, please consider buying it rather then stealing it. 59 euro is very, very good value and they deserve all the support they can get. My :2cents::)

hey guys just wanted to link you all to a topic i made, for all who dont see it, which talks about a website/software that can basically replace microsoft office. it reads its formats, its completely FREE, microsoft has publicly criticised it (showing fear of competition) and works for both mac and windows! the site is http://www.openoffice.org

more on this in the topic i made

has anyone else that uses photoshop activly noticed this, or is this just a CS2 problem?

Reg old photoshop 7.0 runs marvelously for me!!!! ;)
