So my mom went out and bought a $2,500 Dell laptop for work. It arrived a few days ago but I was busy with homework so I wasn't able to get the laptop setup. So I finally open the box, and get started working on congiuring everything. I have already had 3 BSODs in the past 5 hours since I booted the laptop for the first time. And MS just happens to have a hotfix, but I have to wait until a Microsoft rep can contact me in 8 business hours.

MS, A tip: When someone's computer isn't wokring, then want to fix it now. Not wait till monday.

Anyone else had a pissy experience like this?

Of course it's better. Vista was made to comply with 1000's of hardware platforms. OS X was made to work with the small range of Apple hardware plus the small amount of supported 3rd Party hardware. I personally wouldn't blame it on Vista, but blame it on Dell for selling you incompatible hardware.

Not one problem with Vista in the past year that I have toyed with it on my and my wife's Acers.

I have had a few BSODs on my Acer because of overheatings, and my wife has had a couple because of Adobe Photoshop, but none because of Vista.

It is Dells fault, not Microsofts, but Microsoft will get the blame because when people boot up their computers, all they see is "MICROSOFT WINDOWS", not "DELL". Most people usually just don't know any better.

A tip for the future: "It is not the computer, it is you."

Yes, I know about this Microsoft hotfix stuff! The KB article says something to the effect of: The problem will be fixed in the next service pack, but if you need it now (as opposed to searching the KB just for the hell of it!), call MS support to get a download link. I won't debate whether the problem is the fault of Vista, but if you replace "Vista" with "Microsoft Support" in the thread title, there's a statement I just could not argue with!

Tip - if you come across something like this again, note the KB article number, then search around for a download of KB<the number>, it's likely someone will be hosting a copy somewhere that you don't have to wait for a call or sit on hold to get. I've done this before and got what I needed!

Yeah, I guess I do need to place some blame on dell for not shipping compatible hardware, but Microsoft still deserves blame for not making the patch easily available.

No they don't. You aren't the only one having problems with a computer. Thousands to millions of people are, where microsoft is trying to service them all. Could the support be better? Yes. Can it be better? Possibly.

Your all saying vista SP1 fixed all or most of your vista BSoDz... why have you had to wait a year to get simple problems sorted out!

Utterly ridiculous, but hey, thats

for you...

Oh, and while MS are still fixing the Major problems with their OS, starting with the OS its self, why do we not all just pop over to OS X for i don't know, maybe just until you feel like going back to your BSOD ;)

Think Mark

Funny thing with that is, I never had bsod even before SP1. Believe it or not, there are a number of people that had no problems with Vista, I'm one of them. :)

Ditto... with legit installs.

Just because 99.9% of the talk on the internet about Microsoft is negative doesn't mean 99.9% of the user base has had a bad experience. It just means that about 10 people need to get rid of 99 of their 100 computers and get a life. That goes for anything on the internet, from an Operating System by Microsoft to Cupcakes by Cupcake Unlimited.

My :(

I don't really think that wether the install is legit a not makes a difference in stability ( I say it i never had a legit Windows copy).

I have this friend who's a long time mac user and he says "My Mac is incredible it never crashes!" of course that is versus his PC that crashes all the time... Then you realize he spent 3000$ to buy his Mac and 300$ to build his PC (using pirate Windows and the cheapest components of course).

How much {censored} PC hardware do you have on the market vs {censored} Mac hardware? I would like too see the stability of Macs homebuilt by users for 300$ (using the cheapest components they could find) and loaded with all the {censored} they could find on internet... that would be a fair comparison.

If your PC running Windows is crashing, you have bad hardware or bad installation. My best example is my boss that manages to break programs on any computer he gets his hands on (Mac or PC).

He's got a Macbook air now thats he does not use anymore at work because the screen is too small and he bought an Imac with the 24" inch screen. The Imac gets soo hot its not even funny, I'm patiently waiting for summer to see how hard it's gonna crash or how long it's gonna work for before some components fail. I'm sure I can cook bacon or eggs on the hot air exhaust (and it's still cold here).

I have my gripes with Vista but stability has never been an issue. On everything I've installed it on it's been reliable and problem-free. I haven't really had any problems with Windows NT in general. Any time it's been crashy on me I've been able to isolate it to a hardware problem. As long as the hardware is working right, the systems I use seem to run forever.

If Vista wasn't a massive resource hog with an inefficient GUI I'd use it on all of my machines. For now, XP64 will have to do, and of course OS X. 8)

This wasn't a windows experience when I had it but a dell one. they sent me a laptop with a dying graphics card so I'd get bsods or random reverts to 256 colors all the time. Then the mobo died. then the screen died. then it fell apart, nothing sticks in the bottom left modular bay, the screen can't stay up by itself.

It wasn't cheap at the time, the inspiron 8200s..

I moved it a total of five times in the past six years. no mobile {censored} to wear on it there.

Dell laptops just suck IMO.

My Inspiron E1705's video card died soon after I started tinkering with OSx86. I replaced the dead 7900GS Go with a 7950GTX Go. Very nice. I also bought a new laptop, not a Dell.

I saw several people on Dell's forums and other places with 7900GS Go's that died right around the time mine did.
