bluemax
I'd like to try OSx86 for the first time, and I'm pretty serious about making the move. If I could afford a mac, I'd just go and buy one.... but budget simply won't allow it. So.... what I'd like to do is have the right AFFORDABLE parts (as in well under $100 for the mobo) ahead of time, that would all but guarantee a smooooooooth, easy installation where everything is found and everything works. No hassles, no command lines. What I have now: AMD X2 3800+, AM2 MSI K9NU mobo, I believe... (AM2, ULi M1697 chipset) X1300Pro video 2x1GB DDR2 onboard audio (plain stereo) 160GB SATA2 HDD and/or 80GB IDE HDD and a floopity-floppy! There haven't been many success stories I've found (or anything!) about the M1697 chipset since it wasn't very popular. I could either: a- Sell mobo & CPU and replace with Intel combo that's "easy-install" b- Try to get the existing combo to work, which could prove easy or difficult... who knows? Honestly, I'm afraid to tackle any confusing issues, so I think many others like myself would benefit knowing which affordable chipsets/mobos offer the greatest amount of easy compatibility with a particular OSx86 distribution.... if you have a suggestion on that too it'd be appreciated! *** I'd also like to consider an Intel QUAD processor someday... maybe I should get a mobo NOW that would support it in the future! You know what should be stickied? A list of 100% no-fuss mobos for the people who just want an easy install! Thanks gang... I'll keep scouring the site and popping in a few times a day. Good stuff here! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/96068-which-mobocpuosx86_distro-will-have-100-perfect-install-no-hassles/ Share on other sites
Coadey
Just built a new system without hassles, so I'd suggest the parts at: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=95910 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/96068-which-mobocpuosx86_distro-will-have-100-perfect-install-no-hassles/#findComment-686976 Share on other sites
hauj0bb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128059 <-- GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX this board is $89.99, and I've read that it works flawlessly and it supports quad-core cpus. Match that with a low to mid range core 2 duo, and you should be good to go. bluemax
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128059 <-- GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX this board is $89.99, and I've read that it works flawlessly and it supports quad-core cpus. (if it has any video...) Wow. Great to know! I wonder if there's any AMD mobos+distros that work just as flawlessly! Hmm.... to cap it all, it's even on sale at NCIX (the great Canadian place!) If I can sell off my other PC's, I think we have a winner! It has 112 great reviews, so people sure love this board! Hope I can find the right distro to use.... and I'll have to keep using my X1300 video card, I see. Thanks, and if there's more I need to know - please keep it coming! hauj0bb
I'll most likely be purchasing the board i linked myself, because i can't get loepard to install on my BFG Tech am2 590 sli motherboard (USB I/O issues ie: no keyboard/mouse). In most cases you probably will have to patch the audio, but from what i've read it's pretty painless, there are several walkthroughs on these boards. network should work out-of-box, and video depending on the chip you may have to patch; the newer versions of NVinject however support most nvidia cards. I haven't read enough up on ATI cards to say what works and what doesn't, but look around and you'll find an answer. AMD systems seem to require a lot more work in most cases, and if you're looking for something that will get leopard up and running quickly I wouldn't even bother with an amd machine at this point anyway. frizbot
GA-P35-DS3L is cheap and I've heard of some issues with more modern CPUs and Vista. It is the low cost solution. NCIX also has the Asus P5K-E WIFI, which is very popular with OSX86. P35 has an issue with JMicron IDE and 4gb of RAM. They also have the Q9450 (or the Xeon equivelent) on sale. These sales are weekly, cyclical, and usually contain the same products. What they switch around are USB keys, keyboards, mice, soundcards...CPU, printers, motherboards, RAM, videocards, these tend to stay in the sale until obsoleted. AMD X2 3800 isn't horribly old, but the C2D platform is far faster now. AM2 isn't outdated, so it's still worth money. OSX86 tends to work with far fewer patches on Intel systems. I'd suggest selling that system, and buying a new Intel one. That, or have an OSX86 machine, and a Windows one next to it. UnaClocker
You can see most of my setup in my sig, but I'll go over it again.. Abit IP35-E motherboard $59.99 on NewEgg (after $30 mail in rebate) (Don't expect the old standard IDE to ever work on this thing) Seagate 250gb SATA hard drive $69 on NewEgg (smaller drives are cheaper, if need be) GeForce 7300LE - $22 on Ebay, shipped even. (no onboard video on this board) 2gigs of DDR2-800 - $33 on Pricewatch.com E2160 Core 2 Duo - $66 on Pricewatch.com Asus DVD-RW SATA - $31 on NewEgg 550watt Power Supply - $29 on Pricewatch (I tend to ignore the $18 one that is spammed on there 10 times in a row) Heatsink/Fan - $10 on NewEgg I assume you already have a case. This setup works great with Kalyway's original 10.5.1 install CD. Do the combo hack update to 10.5.2 and then the Kalyway kernel update, and you'll be golden. Onboard sound works (ALC888) with the HDAPatcher. The video works with nVinject, and the network worked right out of the box. Looks like about $320 for a Hackintosh machine assuming you have to buy everything on that list. (I already had the DVDRom and hard drive, and I didn't use a heatsink for the CPU). steadybootleggin
the giga-byte 945gcmx-s2c goes up to 4 gb ram and, sleeps and wakes perfectly.......if you shop around a bit ,... you can build a nice hack for about $600 ( and that is with like a $80 case) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/96068-which-mobocpuosx86_distro-will-have-100-perfect-install-no-hassles/#findComment-690537 Share on other sites

Match that with a low to mid range core 2 duo, and you should be good to go. I bought one of those yesterday. From what i read, everything works on it with minimal tweaking. The board is cheap, supports 1333fsb, 8gb ram, and core2quads, so its a great board for $90. I got one of those and an E6750 and 4gb (2x2gb) OCZ reaper ram. Got the ram for $55 (rebate ends today on newegg, so if you want it, move quick!). I can longer boot with an external USB drive attached, the motherboard freezes during POST. I've had that problem. Do you have USB legacy support enabled in the bios? I had to turn that off to get USB thumbsticks to work. Makes it so I can't get into bios with my USB keyboard, or enter boot options.. Kind of annoying, but I have a PS2 keybaord handy for when I need to do that. QuietOC
I've had that problem. Do you have USB legacy support enabled in the bios? It worked for a while and then stopped, like something burned out. Internet searching says P35 boards frequently have USB issues. I was booting Leopard off a 7200rpm 2.5" USB drive when it happened.
