Fruitboi
Sounds great pcwiz! Let me know if you need any help! Not sure what I can do... maybe proofread and test your tutorials? U think you will create a new thread for this? ~pcwiz
Yeah I probably might make a new thread to keep it neat, 10.5.3 hasn't been released yet, we'll see how it goes. Pilgrimage
First, thanks for the excellent guide! The installation went without any problems on my Gigabyte P35-DS3R, but when i restart my computer, the all-famous "You need to restart your computer" error pops up. I booted with -v and see something like this: display: family specific matching fails ... Debugger called: <panic> ... Kernel loadable modules in backtrace: com.apple.ATIRadeonX1000 ... I tried installing OSX with NATIT driver, ATYinject driver and without a driver. But every time the same error. The videocard is a Sapphire x1950 pro 256 MB. Should I try to install this version? http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=58988. If so, how do I do this in the console? Thanks for your help... edit: I attached a capture of the errors I get when I boot with -v (crappy quality from mobile camera, but stil readable) edit 2: found the same problem in this thread (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=90795&view=findpost&p=689582). The terminal code looks pretty much the same. Will try this first... Treggs
Got the graphics issue sorted. Apparently the issue was a bios setting From ls8's thread "When installing 2 Cards you must set boot = PEG2 in BIOS, otherwise crash / KP on boot." I'm also running NVinject 0.2.0 dual card version. So as far as I can tell the system is all working. I haven't given everything a thorough test but so far everything I use appears to be working well and at reasonable speed. I installed exactly to pcwiz's guide (thanks btw) and the only exception was the above change to the bios and installing the dual card nvinject kext. I'm running the sleep/standby kernel not the speedstep one. Systems Specs are Gigabyte p35-DS4 rev 1.1 Bios f11 Intel 6600 @2.4 ghz (no overclock yet) 2Gb Ram 800 Mhz 2 x Gigabyte 8600 GTS 256MB Silent pipe 3 x Samsung 226 BW 22" monitors all running at 1680x1050 32 bit colour. The screen arrangement tool worked fine. 1 x Pioneer 215 SATA DVD 1 x SATA 120 Gb 2 x IDE drives, one 120Gb the other 200 Gb. Dual booting with XP using darwin boot loader. XP and OSX are installed on the SATA drive Next step is to get Ubuntu 8.04 triple booting and a bit of an overclock. If I find anything weird I'll post here (hopefully with a fix). Glad u got 'er figgered out! P.S. Ubuntu is great, and I can *almost* understand dual-booting into Windows if you are a gamer (and no other reasons :-D ). But why triple boot into Ubuntu? I replaced my Ubuntu box (+2 VMs on top of Ubuntu to get the applications I needed) with OS X Server that does 10000x better job and it's much faster and easier than both Windows and Ubuntu! Fruitboi Yep I'm a gamer but I'm also a day trader. I'm playing with different operating systems to see what works best for trading. Windows works very well for what I do but I like the idea's behind linux/unix. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try I can't get my trading software to work under wine (or crossover, same thing) in either system, but that hasn't stopped me trying. I just want to triple boot to see if I can get it figured out. If I'm using all threee OS's and I get my software to work then I can use whichever platform I prefer. Because I'm a gamer it's a little hard to get away from windows, but crossover games is a step in the right direction. Fruitboi
Treggs, I'm sure you know that OS X is a Unix style core (BSD in particular). The Darwin core is open source, just not the OS X GUI & apps. Install VMWare Fusion onto your OS X system and yer rockin & rollin! Windows apps can act just like Mac apps with Unity view (or Parallels has the same thing as well). Let us know how it turns out! I'd be very interested! ~pcwiz
Silven, Dual boot with XP: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Chain0 Pilgrimage, If you are getting "Kernel loadable modules in backtrace: com.apple.ATIRadeonX1000" and you can't fix it, just remove ATIRadeonX1000.kext and it will boot. To do this, boot up the system in single user mode (-s at F8 boot prompt) and run these commands: /sbin/mount -uw / mkdir /KextBackup/ cp -R /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext /KextBackup/ rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext Should boot up after that so you can install new drivers gendem, For sure, thanks Treggs and Fruitboi, In the new Ubuntu 8.04 there is a new Wubi installer that will install Ubuntu from within Windows to a DSK file and it will add an entry to the Windows bootloader to boot Ubuntu. OSXwho
2. Configure the FSB when you want to overclock-if you are noob find out more about this cause you could burn out your CPU. However it comes out to the FSB needed by your processor. 3. Alternating slots is correct. Hi All Well, my rig arrived today. Things are kinda weird, however! 1. I tried the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD and first time around it said the media was damaged at about 75% install.. 2nd burn it locked up solid at 14% install. Downloading 10.5.1 DVD now to be 100% compliant with this guide. formatted GUID with 3 HFS+ partitions. 2. I got the GA-EP35-DS3R and C2D E4500 2.2GHz 800FSB. I've setup several AMD boxes in the past, this is my first Intel. Why does my FSB show as 200MHz and x11 multiplier?! Isn't that upposed to be 800MHz FSB with about 4 multiplier? 3. the DS3R manual says to that the RAM channels are slots 1,2 and 3,4, but others have said (and the manual mentions) to put your pairs in alternating slots so they are in the same color? Which one is correct? I currently have them matching to the colored slots. Sorry, I'm feeling like a total noob right now. Normally I should know this stuff, but it's just a little different than AMD boards I guess? Treggs
Just thought I'd report VMware fusion installed and worked perfectly first go. Might have to install vmware in ubuntu and compare. I'm starting to run out of excuses for running windows. The only thing that doesn't work out of everything I want/need is the compiz eye candy in linux. No support for three screens yet. For those that are interested, Vmware fusion definitely runs quickly in OSX and the unity feature is pretty nice. All I have to do is add an osx theme to xp (under vmware) and it would look like windows software was running natively. Now that is cool Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90795-guide-installer-leopard-gigabyte-ga-p35-ds3pds3rds4-1052-efi/page/28/#findComment-739290 Share on other sites

Thanks! Just one other thing: when I installed the 10.5.2 kernels package, I only selected the Vanilla option (the last one if I remember). No sleep, SSE3,... Afterwards I installed the sleep kernel from the Gigabyte P35 Installer, but now, the sleep function doesn't work. Do I need to select both sleep kernels when I install? Islander Hey mate. Don't give up. You'll get there. I remember sitting on this rig for many months before finally working. I have also noticed that sometimes, it could be the actual disc (the one you burn off the kalyway or any other) that is the source of the {censored}. I had the kalyway disc (burnt myself) but it just would not install correctly, but after getting my mate's disc, it work beautifully. I reckon what you need is a n00b guide, which was what i had, and it made my life much easier. You rig is nearly like mine apart from the GPU and I dont see why not it wont work with yours. Islander
I forgot about that one. I had another 8600GT before the one currently installed that I tried EVERYTHING on, but wouldnt work. I'll give it a shot. there is one other issue and that is partitioning. I'm not positive what exactly happened, but there is a "ghost" partition that doesnt show up in disk utility but shows up in the F8 screen on bootup and says its a foreign OS. now it being there isnt really what the problem is. the problem is when I go to reinstall OSX, I erase the hard drive to re-partition, and it says, "error: bad file descriptor." it deletes my OSX and Vista partition though. . . then when I go to repartition it says the same thing! (I believe. I'm typing from memory.) talk about frustrating! Then I wait a day or so and go back and partition (without erasing) and it works? its confusing as hell. Now I'm having an issue installing vista which there really shouldnt be any. First it said that windows cannot install due to GPT partitioning, which I found a fix for. I go to hit next and it says something like "unable to install". . . I've hit more walls than a crash dummy. this vista problem sounds like the same problem as the OSX but with different wordage. . . Fruitboi
Islander, The phantom partition you are seeing is most likely the EFI partition. Gparted shows it as 200MB in size, and is marked Bootable. I don't know much about it, but I think that is where the EFI bootloader lives. Thats why the first partition available in Disk Util is DxS2.. Slice1 is for EFI I think. I had a devil of a time trying to fully erase the drive as well. I'm not sure how I finally got around it though?! But, EFI needs to be there for OS X Fruitboi Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/90795-guide-installer-leopard-gigabyte-ga-p35-ds3pds3rds4-1052-efi/page/28/#findComment-741517 Share on other sites
