Feedback... :)

EDIT: I use Phoenix BIOS Editor :)

Hi Kabyl,

appreciate your kindness but :P there aren't any results

(can't start w/o cpus=1 and some ACPIP errors during the boot)

I've tried to use PBE (v2.2.) but couldn't compile bios after revising ACPIP section

"unable to write TEMP file ASL compiler error" something like that

In idea we can put revised (and working) DSDT table for linux or BSD to ACPIP section

of the bios (am I right?)

What revision of PB editor do you use?

Thanks

First of all congratulations indeed for the IMPRESSIVE work you're doing and for your researches/results U're doing!

I'll post in a couple of hours a feedback for the already available ASRock 4Core1333-eSata2 mobo (I already was distrusty!).

If U're searching for other models to test, can U check if the mod can be applied to this notebook model too?

Notebook model: IBM R51

Model type: 2889 W5V

If it's possible to mod this BIOS too, another test will be done with relative feedback...

Thx 4 what U're doing, m8!

I work for the geeksquad and get a chance to work tons of laptops. I currently want to get the G1sn but i know it has issues installing kalyway and i know you have modified them to make it work. So if you would be ever so awesome to fix it, you would make the happiest person :D

Hi kabyl,

I see you have had some success patching some BIOS's to fix the alias issue. Any chance you might be interested in tackling the missing HPET device in the Dell BIOS ACPI table? At one point I tried hacking the data in via the bootloader but the approach was a long-shot. I wanted to write a kernel extension to manually add the device to the ACPI device list but failed to find the information I needed to do so.

Thanks!

Thx to Kabyl mod to the original 1.40 firmware, now my ASRock 4core1333-eSata2 can smoothly run all the installation steps and complete the setup process: just some errors/kernel panic hangs during 1st reboot, but I'm sure it's just a drivers/kexts problem: with some patience and luck, all the problem will be soon solved!!!

(just considering that before applying kabyl patch, the system was always looply rebooting before showing the first setup screen)

Thx again to kabyl for his indispensable work!!!

Concerning with IBM R51 notebook: after several configuration workarounds and kexts mods, it seems that everything is working fine (after more than one week modding and working on it): so this model of notebook should work with its original BIOS without any additional firmware patch (it's been a little bit tricky, but at the end it works ))

IBM R51 video card is not supported, so it'll only work in VESA mode... but it's a quite old (SSE2) notebook, so it could be ok :D

I have written a kext that will "Inject" the DSDT without needing to mod the BIOS, so this should work for more people (with _less_ risk). Currently, it's functional (at least for me), will do more testing and will release it when it's ready :P

This I find interesting, I don't have the other problems with the cpu, but I wanted to change the names in the DSDT to reflect a more macish naming of the devices for my laptop, and maybe that will help some few more subtle problems. So how is this going?

Hey all, Just so everyone knows, Kabyl has made some amazing progress with this common and annoying problem. Especially for anyone using an MSI P35 NEO/NEO F motherboard.

I've just tested his bios patch for said problematic motherboard. The bios flash went without a problem using the USB flash utility found on the MSI forums. I used an iPod video to install this MSI utility to, then booted from the iPod. Started the flash procedure without problem. Turned off the machine and cleared the cmos (the manual and chaps in the msi forum say to short the bios backup jumper, I just yarked the battery out as getting your hand in between an 8800gts and an x-fi fatal1ty is a bit of a squeeze). So, system booted up fine, loaded bios defaults, rebooted, re-entered all my settings, all fine. Booted into vista without a problem. Tried Kalyway Leo... and behold, no switches needed, straight into the installer. So here I am, all four cores and a vanilla kernel.

Cheers Kabyl... can I FedEx you a pint? lol

Works fine

can boot the dvd with no cpus=1

now jsut have to get IDE working on it XD

also, as thedood pointed out to me, you have to extract the bios from the zip file and then choose beta bios when you copy it to the usb stick

Hey th3d00d !

Thanks for the tip,

Everything worked well, got now a nice picture at computer boot instead of the old horrible starship..

But the matter is ... that I still have to boot with cpus=1

Could you please post your bios acpi / apic settings ?

Should I use the original acpi kexts from kalyway 10.5.1 ?

Thx !

Hi, everybody, this is my first post in this forum.

This thread is really active and its doing a lot for the whole project.

I've been looking around, waiting for someone to come up with a solution for Dell's models, but couldn't find it yet.

Can someone explain in simple words,

why Dell BIOS can´t be modified?

does someone know if Dells problem is the same your are solving with these modified BIOSes?

Is someone working with the DSDT injection approach for Dells laptops?

Thanks.

Hey lioudow... Odd that you'd still have to do the cpus=1... firstly, did the flash go ok, ie, did it say it a)backed up your original bios  erase your bios c) copied the new bios.... then did it say it was ok to reboot the machine.

If this is the case, then the bios settings i used, well, the ones that were relevent,

MPS table version [1.4]

IOAPIC [Enabled]

ACPI [s3]

HPET [Enabled]

EIST [Disabled]

Execute Bit [Enabled]

That should hopefully sort it :(

Chances are Dells issues are no different. What is different is dells compression algorithm that they use and the fact that their developer tools for their BIOS have not been leaked or reversed engineers thus no one can save Dell through BIOS hacking. Only an on the fly DSDT patch during boot up will solve this problem.... Kabyl had been working on this but I am not aware of its status atm.
