Hot~Line
Hi, so after my old computer killed himself I need to buy a new machine. I don't have much money so I'm looking for the cheapest OS X capable machine to run OS X 10.5.x with native hardware support. I don't work with photo/movie/music editing tools. I only need something for office work, itunes and sometimes watching a DVD. So I even would go for a Celeron if it works proper for my needs. Please tell me which Hardware to buy because I'm just starting to understand the whole hackintosh thing. Thanks in advance! -Max Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/82350-searching-for-the-cheapest-config-to-run-osx-105x/ Share on other sites
~pcwiz
Heres a config that is extremely cheap: Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128076 (Gigabyte GA-945GCM-S2C) Processor: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16819116037 (Intel Pentium Dual Core E2140 1.6GHz) RAM: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16820134114 (1GB Kingston DDR2 800) Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16814121021 (ASUS EN7300GT SILENT 256MB) Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16822136062 (Western Digital Caviar SE16 160GB) Optical Drive: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16827118002 (Sony NEC Optiarc 20x DVD Burner) Case + PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811233017 (Gigabyte GZ-M1 + 300W PSU) TOTAL: $404.92 I suggest you don't go any lower than this config. Of course, you could replace the Pentium Dual Core with a slow Celeron and all but that won't give you 100% compatibility and it won't give you good performance. Good luck ~pcwiz Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/82350-searching-for-the-cheapest-config-to-run-osx-105x/#findComment-585616 Share on other sites
bryyando
quick question about the above build. would this set up work? https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/WishLi....asp?ID=5374445 and you can use any hard drive for leopard right? and would my current graphics card work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814133154 and would the rest of my computer work cause then thats the as cheap as it gets http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-ASUS-Asus-A8S-...audio-ATX-A8S-X -mother board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103533 -processor yea im new to all of this. but a mac would seem really useful to try out and sorry i couldnt find a newegg page for my mother board. ~pcwiz
I can't see your wishlist, I don't have a Newegg account, but yes, you can use any hard drive for Leopard. Your current graphics card is listed as working with NVinject. However for running Leopard, an AMD processor and motherboard is not good. You can still run Leopard, but no 100% compatibility and no vanilla kernel. If you have the money I strongly recommend a Core 2 series processor and an Intel motherboard that is supported. bryyando
i see thank you, the graphics card is all i really care about but if i could use my old rig thats a super bonus. that wishlist is pretty much that setup you posted but with these: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16811133007 http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16817165004 i honestly have no clue about power supplies though and if you could recommend me another one that would be greatly appreciated. if i could get a mac case that would be even better. ~pcwiz
That case will work fine The PSU has enough wattage and all, but it doesn't seem to be very good quality. You'd be fine using it, but I would recommend a new power supply from a reputed manufacturer like Antec, OCZ, Silverstone, Thermaltake, Apevia, Gigabyte, Raidmax, etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/82350-searching-for-the-cheapest-config-to-run-osx-105x/#findComment-588506 Share on other sites

bryyando
thanks for all the help. umm... ill probably game a little bit tho, i really love my graphics card tho not because of how great it is but how i can plug it in to a bunch of different ports. i find that really helpful since im on the look out for a new tv/lcd monitor. could you recommend me a good psu then? something that isn't "way more than enough" Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/82350-searching-for-the-cheapest-config-to-run-osx-105x/#findComment-590179 Share on other sites
