OT: rather than reinstalling, you can replace the original file from linux, using knoppix, for instance, if you're not dual-booting.. the_painless
The developer restore-DVD for 10.4.4 leaked yesterday. I heard that in this release Apple included the kext's for the Xk1-series (does anybody know more or something else?) Let's hope Maxxuss releases a Patch so we can install OSx86 10.4.4 on our machines... munky
gbilly: thanks for the info. based on this i went ahead and bought an X1800XL (found one on ebay for £160 ) can you please tell me how the 'Flurry' screensaver performs? its an OpenGL thing, ysee. also, could you do me a HUGE favour - on boot, at the Darwin prompt could you type "Graphics Mode"="2048x1536x32" and test? (if your monitor will go that high of course). many thanks - munky Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7934-ati-xk1-series/#findComment-51831 Share on other sites

However, the highest resolution according to ?video at the Darwin prompt is 1900x1200. munky
1900x1200 would be just fine by me really want it for photo work, in iPhoto (until the Aperture unibin comes out). thanks again for all the info. EDIT: when you say flurry seems alright... is it fast and smooth, or does it jerk around the screen? if its fast and smooth then i guess your OpenGL is fine. quake might just not work because it was compiled for 10.4.1 on the DTK. try this version: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...7945&hl=quake+3 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/7934-ati-xk1-series/#findComment-52070 Share on other sites

munky
hey there. the dude who figured out how to use the 10.4.4 drivers in the first place (danman) has an X1600XT i beleive, fully working with CI/QE. for my money, the X1800 is much better value (its price is dropping due to X1900 release), and its a MUCH better card. Munky, When get have a chance to test the X1800, would you please post your impressions (particularly in regards to flurry performance, screen artifacts, tearing, and mouse pointer issues)? If you think it's a good value, I'll probably end up getting the card too, although I need confirmation that the PCI-E version works as well. munky
@kikos: my X1800XL PCI-E should arrive today, and i'll hopefully have the time to install and test tonight (GMT). will post my results asap. for reference, my setup is a Pentium D 920 (2.8Ghz, 2Mb cache per core), Intel D945GTP board, 2x512 667Mhz dual-channel RAM. munky
hi kikos: ok, so here's my impressions of the X1800XL. firstly, under winxp sp2, running Call of Duty 2 I was able to crank everything up to max, set resolution to 1280x1024@85Hz and it rocked. however, it kept crashing, not sure if its the card or the drivers or what, but the Catalyst thing kept coming up with a message that it had to reset the VPU cos it had stopped responding (?!?!) so i guess i'll tinker with that a bit more to get it stable. under OSX, the darwin bootloader detects it as a 16Mb Vesa3.0 card, and will only give me up to 1280x1024. this is a major bummer for me, cos on my geforce 6800 i was running 2048x1536x32 (tho unaccelerated). booting up, the CI and QE work 100%, with the only issues being slight tearing with the mouse. I did the mousepose trick and it basically solves it 100%. the machine is running totally sweet, except i'd like higher resolution, basically. as for flurry and other opengl performance.... i, er, forgot to test that. sorry! :pirate2: i'll test tonight. kikos
Munky, thanks for the review! Hopefully those qwirks you mentioned will get fixed soon. I think I might hold out until 10.4.5 to see if there will be anymore video driver updates, cus I don't really want to fork out alot of $$$ for a new video card. However, I may get impatient, so who knows. Graphics and sound are my final hurdles to overcome with getting my system Mac OSX for the most part. hi kikos: ok, so here's my impressions of the X1800XL. firstly, under winxp sp2, running Call of Duty 2 I was able to crank everything up to max, set resolution to 1280x1024@85Hz and it rocked. however, it kept crashing, not sure if its the card or the drivers or what, but the Catalyst thing kept coming up with a message that it had to reset the VPU cos it had stopped responding (?!?!) so i guess i'll tinker with that a bit more to get it stable. under OSX, the darwin bootloader detects it as a 16Mb Vesa3.0 card, and will only give me up to 1280x1024. this is a major bummer for me, cos on my geforce 6800 i was running 2048x1536x32 (tho unaccelerated). booting up, the CI and QE work 100%, with the only issues being slight tearing with the mouse.
