It's not so much that but the fact that ICH9R/ICH8R work perfectly in OS X (on 3 different boards for me), out of the box in AHCI mode, even with stock kexts which show it as a 'Generic AHCI controller'. Why switch to IDE mode when AHCI works?

I can see why you might have a problem and need the kext with vanilla ICH8/ICH9 boards as some of those have AHCI disabled in the BIOS because Intel don't officially support it, although Gigabyte still do AFAIK.

All sata ports? My P5B, P5B Deluxe, AB9 Pro, 4CoreDual-Viiv run Os X in AHCI Mode, but only the first two sata ports!!! To access to the controller in AHCI mode there is only an address: 0x28248086. How do you get the other ports?

I dunno... On both my 965P-DQ6 (ICH8-R) and P35C-DS3R (ICH9-R), all 6 ports work fine in 10.5/10.5.1, and in 10.4.10 on the 965P board running stock kexts. I did later modify the Info.plist to show ICHx-R AHCI rather than generic AHCI controller, but this is purely cosmetic. I haven't tried 10.4.x on the P35 and have no reason to either. All ports show up in system profiler, and I can connect devices to any of them. I don't have to do anything, so maybe you should be looking at a BIOS level rather than a driver level to solve this issue.

Only 2 ports show up on my 965P-DS3 (ICH8 Vanilla) running in AHCI mode, but that seems to be a known issue - ICH8 (and maybe ICH9?) Vanilla use a different DevID for the second half of the controller in AHCI mode and nobody seems to be able to get it working.

Enchaced mode in that mobo - it is AHCI enabled mode 8))) But do not work with AppleAHCIport.kextCause if U use IDE mode OSX use AppleAHCIport.kext for It too 8)). So NCQ and other AHCI features are enabled in that mode (ignoring bios settings)Try to install AppleVIAATA.kext from my Universal ICH9 driver and U`ll see difference 8)))

I was testing under Linux, not OS X. ;)

Hi,

Any progress with this issue? I have a P35-DS3L and from what I've heard from other people (who has the same mobo), if you enable AHCI mode from bios, 2 sata ports will only work. I can't test it for myself because I haven't started building this rig (maybe next week).

I have 3 SATA devices which means I'll follow the path of AHCI 2-SATA port not working. Now, my friend (I went to his house) who has the same mobo (we) did some benchmarks with AHCI and IDE modes, they are almost the same in numbers (AHCI is higher but not that much). However, we noticed something different when AHCI is enabled. This were all made in Leopard osx86 environment. We didn't even bother running benchies in Vista.

1) The OSX boots a lot faster (like 5-7 seconds faster)

2) It also "feels" faster >> probably psychological .. lol .. but it really is .. I've felt that too

3) Vista also loads faster (he's in dual boot) compared when it was set to IDE

Benchies/Numbers doesn't say much. But when I actually compare it while looking at the screen, there are differences. I'm pretty much sure its not that "I wanted to see it go fast bec its in AHCI mode" .. I'm holding a stopwatch just to make sure I'm not hallucinating.

BTW, some people said that enabling AHCI mode, made their OS X system faster (irc/some post in forums here)

So again, any progress here? Making all 4 sata ports working with AHCI enabled? If there is a different link that answers this question, could you please redirect me to that location?

THank you so much for your help! I can't wait to build my own P35-DS3L rig next week!

yeah! bump ... lol

anybody have news about the 4 sata ports? I just built my rig .. and everything seems ok .. but I disabled AHCI so I could see all my SATA devices..

*Just for testing purposes* - When I enabled AHCI .. it boots faster ;) But benchies are identical ;) It just boots and feels faster

Ok, well what I would like is a way to be able to enable my RAID so that my windows drives are in a RAID 0 while OS X is in RAID mode, but not part of any array. I know this was possible on Tiger, anyone have any idea how to make this work? I'm willing to help anyway I can...please SOMEONE!!! I miss my RAID 0, but I don't want to get rid of OS X! (Nor do I want to have to go into the BIOS and turn the computer to AHCI mode everytime I want to boot OS X)

I'm running Asus Rampage Formula (ICH9-R) like you need.

I have installed KALYWAY 10.5.2 Combo Final and I can see all 6 ports with RAID 0 setted

How can I know the name of the driver that I have working here so I can send it to you ?
