Stravaganza
MSI G31M mother boardThe problem:Depending on which install method, I get:a: Kalyway 10.5.1 - the endless reboot after the initial load of all the modulesb: iAtkos and flat image - multiple dependencies on ACPIThe possible solution:I also have an Intel MacBook (running Tiger), a USB adapter which will connect the SATA drive on the PC to the MacBook (I have done this), and a Leopard retail install disk. Will this work?Hi betzalel, Does iAtkos installation force the system to reboot too? (Because multiple dependencies on ACPI does not mean that the installation is bad enough to keep rebooting.) Under assumption that iAtkos also causes the reboot, I think the source of the problem is original Apple kernel module(s). (Otherwise, it's modified kernel module(s) in Kalyway installation.) If the assumption is true, I am not sure that your proposed solution will work. (You may try anyway because there's nothing to be broken on MacBook part. I however wonder if such an installation method sets the active boot flag correctly on the USB connected HDD. Also even if it does set active boot flag correctly, it will install the problematic kernel module(s) too.) I would first identify kernel module(s) before trying other installation methods. Anyway, I am not sure which kernel module(s) causes the problem. It could be rather BIOS setting problems. If your system do not automatically reboot but shows black box with white messages in multiple languages at the center of the screen, it might be AppleEFIRuntime.kext (my best guess). Rename it to something else (like AppleEFIRuntime.kext.10.5.0), boot with -f to rebuild kext caches, and see if the problem is persistent. Sorry that I cannot be helpful. --S I Have a question how do you "properly" prepare a BrazilMac disc????I think what Onetrack means is a DVD with label "OS X Install DVD x86" burned from an ISO image of name "Leo_Patched_DVD.iso" by following instructions in BrazilMAC guide from the beginning up to (but before) "INSTALLATION METHOD 1" in the guide. In this guide, you are safe to use retail Leopard DVD for 9a581 GM DVD image. If the patch is successful, you should see at most one error in total and the output should look like this (code in section E). Make sure that you do the patch on a Mac (or Hac) running Tiger not Leopard and have enough free space on the HDD where you do the patch job. --S I'm looking at a P5B, P5B-VM, or a P5KWhich one is going to give me the best audio? I'm looking for surround, but most of the wiki's are stating stereo. If you could present some links to specifications of motherboards, you might get your answer faster.--S Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/72493-leopard-perfect-install/page/35/#findComment-613615 Share on other sites
betzalel
Hi Stravaganza, No, iAtkos doesn't reboot. It does the same thing as the flat image install, i.e. loads for a while, then gives a series of messages including multiple dependencies on com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform na com.apple.driver.ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin and then dies. Freezes actually. I need to press the reset button on the PC to restart. There is a thread in the Hardware section about MSI motherboards (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=66944) which indicates that there is a major problem with some MSI motherboards (of which mine is one) and their version of ACPI 2.0. Anyway, I have NEVER gotten to the install screen. I have now tried booting my Leopard disk and for some reason my MacBook does not recognize it as a bootable disk. When I mount it, it finds the application. When I press Install, then Restart, the MacBook restarts and comes up absolutely normally (i.e. with 10.4.11, not the install disk). When I restart holding option, the DVD does not show up as an option for booting. It's a pity that they couldn't find the source of problem. Just out of curiosity, you said that the on-board video is GMA 950. I check your motherboard MSI G31M-F and the spec shows GMA 3100. Which one is it? (And I am sure you know that GMA 3100 is not GMA X3100.) If possible, changing the board isn't a bad idea. To be clear, I would not expect MacBook to boot from USB connected HDD. If the interface is FireWire, then you should be able to. Just curious, what partition scheme did you use to partition your USB connected HDD (you may want to try GPT, maybe) and why do you want to boot MacBook from the USB connected HDD (because even if you can boot your MacBook from the HDD, I don't see how this helps to run Hackintosh using the HDD)? fLuXuS
I had similar "waiting for root device" problems with an ASUS P5GC-MX board which had a SATA HDD and an IDE DVD Drive. This problem occurred when the IDE DVD drive was a Slave. Everything worked fine as soon as I changed the DVD drive to a Master. YMMV. yup, when changind dvd to primary master and the ide drive to primary slave you will not just be able to continue booting without getting the "still waiting for root device", but also you eliminate the "IOATAController ... device blocking bus" report. i know it is a bit late for this reply, but i thought.. aehh dont know what i thought. maybe throwing some mustard in.... I believe that the GMA 3100 and X3100 are not the same, but I don't know the difference. I suspect that I will buy (when there is more money) a new motherboard (I have need for a server and I suspect that this one will run Linux). My current choices (based on the HCL list, which I wish I had had previously) are an ASUS P5E (no additional letters) and either an XFX GeForce 7600GT or Zotac GeForce 7300GT 256MB. And I never had non on-board video card on Hackintosh machines. Two patches (LAN and auido) are not too bad for an ATX motherboard, I think. I however wonder if it will be good for the next Mac OS X (v10.6) too because if I spend over 200 USD for a motherboard, I want to use it for a long time. I don't see many people whose motherboard works beautifully both with Tiger and Leopard. It seems many people buy new motherboards just for Leopard. I think this will be true for the next Mac OS X. (That's why I go for a solid cheap microATX board.) For video card, I think both of them are good. Another thought on installing Leopard. Did you try Tiger on your MSI motherboard? Stravaganza
Can anyone confirm, that I can with my 945GCMX-S2 install 10.5.2 from software update? No. You need to do it offline by first downloading the DMG file. Just do what Netkas the Great (How to update to 10.5.2, 11 February 2008) says. It works just fine. Hail to Netkas, (Maxxuss and Netkas are like gods among us mere mortals. ) --S P.S. Well, in the big picture, the instructions of Netkas are simply consistent to that of Onetrack's post patch step although I gotta say that the ideas of replacing Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext with dsmos.kext and background monitoring to take out AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext are strokes of a genius given such a short time. Instead of removing AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, you may want to move it out of /System/Library/Extensions (just to be conservative). Restoring AppleSMBIOS.kext to /System/Library/Extensions folder is necessary to correctly collect the hardware information, which now shows 945GCMX-S2 as Model Identifier in System Profiler. Restoring AppleHDA.kext is necessary to get the audio back. For the rest of them, it's up to your system configuration. betzalel
Hi Stravaganza, Just to keep you updated. I had run into the apparently notorious problem with the Leopard installer wherein it quits if you breath on the computer. Anyway, 20 (more or less) attempts later, I have successfully installed Leopard on a SATA drive attached to a USB connecter to my MacBook. Really successful. Boots and runs, a thing of rare beauty. Now comes the hard part. The disk is formated GPT and, I believe, efi_v8 is sitting there in the first 200 MB of the drive. When I try (I don't expect it to work, I just wanted to experience the error messages) to boot it on the PC, all I get is a blinking cursor. I suspect I need to do something with efi, but I don't know what. Any ideas? I read the start of the forum How To: EFI GFX+Audio Introduction & Tutorial, and what I get from this is that it is much easier after you have a running system as opposed to starting cold. So, what I have is as vanilla a system as one could possibly have. I have also downloaded a number of packages (iAtkos, Kalyway, flat image, hotfix, and BrazilMAC (including its file packages). I assume that there should exist in all this a selection of kexts that I can drop into the install, and be well on my way. Am I right? Do you know which they are? Also, clearly my kernel is not patched at all. Is this what I want? Hi Betz, Thanks for keeping me updated. I respect your persistence. Let's make one thing clear about EFI. You have GPT partitioned SATA HDD just for Leopard. Then you should see at least two partitions and three disk slice numbers (as you do). Let's assume that disk0s1 is of 200MB and disk0s2 takes the rest of the space and contains Leopard installation. The installation of EFI for booting the HDD involves three commands in Terminal. Did you ever use slice #1 in any of those three commands? (I did it once and got the same result like yours.) For the installation of EFI, read section G with the code line starting "# The following line installs EFI v8.0." and below. Does this make any sense to you? Also note that the third command doesn't address any of slice numbers but a disk number. Hope you made a trivial mistake somewhere there. It completely depends on your bridges and on-board components. I will look them later and let you know what kexts to be placed by writing them in this post. But even with perfect video and sound, if the machine doesn't boot, nothing is useful. And to figure out this part requires trial and error for your case because there's no reference. I can give you advice but I am not certain that I will be helpful. You do not want to touch the kernel at all. Once you make your machine bootable, the kernel is not a problem. All your problem as I see is the device drivers (some people call them kernel extensions or extension modules) related to ACPI. --S P.S. GFX strings are rather an optimization of the cumbersome kexts. By themselves, they won't help you to boot the machine because no one has a working system with your motherboard (hence working GFX strings for your motherboard are unknown). Once you have the system working, you can find strings that work on your system. One command for installing EFI and two commands for booting the system. Good luck.--S Hi S, I re-installed the bootloader (via the MacBook) following iGuru's model. (I'm not sure that an HFS+ USB key is what I need to take photos to the printer, but never mind). Included in this I replaced, again per iGuru, AppleSMBios.kext. That is all I have done. I tested the boot process - the boot loader starts and the Apple logo comes up - and then nothing happens. I suspect I need to replace some kexts, but I don't know which. I am using a USB keyboard and mouse, but F8 and Ctrl-V don't seem to do anything, so I can't see any diagnostics or loading messages. What next? All the best, Betz Later: I edited com.apple.Boot.plist and inserted a -v. I have also inserted from the BrazilMAC files folder dsmos.kext and AppleACPIPlatform.kext w/ chown and chmod. Now, when I reboot I get: Extension "com.apple.driver.ACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components. And then freezes. This is the same error I got from trying to install iAtkos and flat image. Based only on the fact that when I was trying to install Kalyway I got past that point, I have a (very little) hope that the Kalyway AppleACPIPlatform.kext might succeed. Judging by what it looks like on the iso however, it gets modified in the install process, and what I need is the final version. Does this make any sense? Is there anywhere I can get that file? Betz Later: I copied the Kalyway AppleACPIPlatform.kext. It now proceeds MUCH further. There are now two different results depending on the power suspend setting: if it is set to S3, the system apparently goes all the way (or almost) through the kext loads and stops with: Extension "com.apple.driver.PCIConfigurator" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components. And then freezes. if it is set to S1, the system apparently goes all the way (or almost) through the kext loads and reboots in an endless loop. I must admit, I am out of my depth. The results are identical - multiple dependencies on ACPIPlatform and then freezes. This puts us back to the BrazilMAC version - the Kalyway version got further. I did some looking to see if I could find anything about PCIConfigurator (which is a sub-kext under appleACPIPlatform), but to no avail. That kext is NOT part of the Apple distribution, so I suppose it was written by someone on the order of Kaly, BrazilMAC, or NetKas. I have no idea how to find out or if it is even relevant. omgraae
Used the kalyway 10.5.1 install. + 10.5.2 update The hardware: Intel Core2duo E6400 @ 3.2GHz 2 GB DDR2 @ 800MHz Abit AB9 pro 7600 GT 256MB 500 Gb WD HDD - AHCI Now running Vanilla kernel + EFI v8 + nvinject The problems: Problem: Could not boot kalyway disk - filesystem not accesible Soluton: Changed SATA controller to use AHCI Problem: Could not boot of the Jmicron controller (neither IDE or AHCI). Solution: Added a SATA dvd drive running AHCI to primary SATA controller Problem: no sound Solution: Used the appleHDA modified kext. "asus ALC882" Problem: Network shares and iTunes shares only visible some of the time Solution: used Sourceforge realtek r1000 driver, works perfectly now Problem: Patched to 10.5.2 using kalyway's patch. takes 4 minutes "blackout"-time between loadscreen and desktop displays. Solution: None found yet. Tried reinstalling nvinject & repairing permissions. Apart from the waiting time at bootup, everything works faster than on my new Macbook Pro 2.2GHz Kalyway rulez! Stravaganza
Hello everyone, Since no one reports it here, I report it. Netkas announced a new AppleSMBIOS.kext here. New version does a better job for getting hardware information. Now on my GA-945GCMX-S2, Model Name is Mac Pro and Model Identifier is MacPro3,1. A Mac Pro tower icon shows up in a Finder window instead of the blue monitor. --S P.S. One post away from InsanelyMac Geek?
