JollyRogers
Has anyone gotten sleep to work yet for nforce chipsets? Are we stuck with the golden kernel (9.0)? I have yet to find a 9.1 kernel that will work unless I pass cpus=1. I read earlier in this thread that someone upgraded their kernel, but ran the post patch after. I looked at the script for the post patch and it replaces the kernel with the mach_kernel in the resources folder, which is the Golden Kernel and is 9.0. I have looked everywhere for a golden kernel 9.1 or post patch for 10.5.1 with no luck. I have no access to IRC unfortunately... As soon as I load the golden kernel my network messes up. So i'm stuck on 1 core but with everything else working as expected. I am able to get on IRC, and in the #10.5 room, the topic is "9.1.0 speedstep/intel/amd/sse3 kernel". Anybody know if thats what we want? I'm willing to give it a shot, but if someone knows if thats not a golden kernel, let me know so I don't waste my time. I downloaded the kernel and it looks like it's just a newer mach_toh kernel, which won't give us dual core support Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/69705-650-and-680i-chipset-thread/page/29/#findComment-595222 Share on other sites

I pm'd .netroller thinking he had something to do with it. oops This would explain why nobody on IRC knows what the golden kernel is lol. And the uname -a of it looks like a vanilla kernel, so that wasn't much help either. I have tiger working well, at 10.4.8, i just did a fresh install of it to try and put leopard on. I have the TOH rc2 leopard, but i have read this forum, but cannot find a fool proof tutorial of installing it over tiger. i have a evga 680i, e6600 at 3.4ghz and a 8800gts 640mb Please could someone help. muitommy
never heard there is a ver. 9.1.0 golden kernel, apart from sleep, i also want speedstep to work!@kilopopostaff is correct. JollyRogers
I am on travel a while, so away from my machine(posting from my iPhone). I am real interested in an updated kernel... In fact to the point of trying to figure out how to compile one myself. Any pointers there? Got lots experience in Linux doing that, but sources for OSX are probably different. I think before we can even start thinking about compiling our kernel we need to figure out what solotitan did to the kernel (and how). It would be great if he explained the process, then maybe we could avoid having to nag him to compile a new kernel for us every 10.5.x release from Apple. Maybe we should start a donation ($1/each) for solotitan to show at least a little appreciation and some motivation to get a new kernel compiled for 9.1. Just a thought. mtotho
Hey, i have 2 hackintoshes up and running already. i have this motherboard and would like to get it running. Can i just install leopard on the hardrive i will be using for my EVGA 680i using my working hackintosh? In addition to that, install the all the kexts and patches needed. Then just hook it into my EVGA board and boot up w/o a problem? thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/69705-650-and-680i-chipset-thread/page/29/#findComment-596043 Share on other sites

.NetRolller 3D
You might try my guide, skipping the partitioning and bootfix steps, and choosing Upgrade where you are supposed to choose New install. (Do a backup first, as this method is untested!) I agree muitommy... wait until 10.5.2 is released to pursue a new kernel... I have a question to you, I notice in your sig that you tried pcefi on your 680i board. Can you tell me how you did it. I realize there are guides here and may follow them to see how it goes with my old PATA drive back in... but one of the benefits of getting PCEFI working is the ability to run the vanilla kernel and performing updates. When you got efi working did you try different kernels or anything? Thanks Yes. When you select the partition, right-click, and it should let you upgrade. EDIT: Some info about the Golden kernel: It has a hacked scheduler that enables it to work with nVidia+multicore. It essentially reverts to the old scheduler algorithm in 10.4.8 (the new, buggy one was introduced in 10.4.9). .NetRolller 3D
Read it in another thread (maybe in yours), just thought it might be interesting to post here. Hyper Salad
I thought I got everything sorted but I'm getting random freeze ups... it seems like that the computer hasnt totally crashed and like its just the screen that doesnt update because my downloads still carry on,etc but the cursor and keyboard locks, mabey its the golden kernel... or mabey something dodgy with these beta 10.5.2 - 8800gt kexts perhaps... can anyone shed some light on this... thanks! JollyRogers
looked into the kernel deal, found sources etc... Basically xnu/darwin kernel will need some patches and a regression to go back to the "older" threading that .netroller mentions. I will be up for this after my work slows... Prob March. If EFI is an option though, will vanilla work ? And then we don't have to compile a custom kernel for our hardware? .NetRolller 3D
Vanilla won't work, unles we get a new EFI which spoofs HPET to look like an Intel chipset's HPET. (Either Intel or nVidia is violating the HPET spec, and vanilla kernels are detecting that.) (Either Intel or nVidia is violating the HPET spec, and vanilla kernels are detecting that.) That is disheartening. Is there anyway that the modifications solutitan did to the kernel makes the cpu not run at it it's full potential? I did an XBench with both cores enabled and it was very low (127). When I did an XBench with only 1 core it was 105. The difference should have been more like 100-200 points higher if both cores were really being utilized. You guys have any thoughts on this? .NetRolller 3D
@eleazar: That's maybe because something other than your CPU is the limiting factor (RAM, HDD, etc.) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/69705-650-and-680i-chipset-thread/page/29/#findComment-597152 Share on other sites
eleazar
@eleazar: That's maybe because something other than your CPU is the limiting factor (RAM, HDD, etc.) Thats what I thought originally. Then I ran just a CPU test and compared both cores to a single core test and the difference was still less 25. Even my friend's 2 year old mac mini rates much higher (and it is a 1.8ghz dual core, whereas mine is 2.4ghz). What are some of the results you guys are getting on the cpu Xbench tests?
