In New York State lawmakers have passed a bill that makes it a FELONY to sell violent video games to minors. Here is what the law entails:

The bill defines a "violent" game as one that contains "photographic, photo-realistic or similar visual representation or image depicting the rape, dismemberment, physical torture, mutilation or evisceration of a human being". The bill similarly describes "indecent images" as those that depict "nudity, sexual conduct or sado-masochistic abuse".

All video game consoles will now have a parental control chip (like the one on the TV) to prevent playing such violent games without the passcode.

Said violent games will also have to be labelled under New York guidelines and a committee will look at violent games (yeah, a committee is the best way to solve a problem).

Now The Associated Press has stated this was the governor's idea so it will probably be signed into law. My take on this in my next post.

All right, now for commentary:

This is another one of those "WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN" laws. It is well intentioned, but there isn't anything about the parents who allow their children to go and purchase these violent games. Those parents need at least a slap on the wrist (and one in the face) for allowing their nine-year-old children to play Grand Theft Auto. Now as the kiddoos age, it should be relaxed. I mean, nine and sixteen are two completely different mentalities, and I don't think anyone should be punished for allowing a sixteen-year-old to play a video game.

The parental control chip is a good idea, but this shouldn't substitute for you actually monitoring your child's playtime.

I think we need a better ratings system that is legally enforceable. We can't sell porn to children, so why are we not as legally bound when it comes to mowing down 80,000 prostitutes after having sex with them while holding a nearly naked chick in your video game arms? I know this comment will draw some fire, but seriously, how legally enforceable is the current system? If someone REEEEEEEEEEEEALLY wanted to buy a rated M game, is it easy or hard to do so? I think it's too easy and others will think it's hard enough that it will deter most.

And the committee--well, we all know that healthy government debates are the best way to solve problems, lol

All my Children play GTA @ age 9, it is a passage.

My 9 yr girl can smack down the best of them in Halo 2.

But all I can say is thx for lookin out for my choices.

I agree with there should be some limit to selliong some games to minors, but some games that are rated M dont really deserve to be....like Halo , I think there should be a rating inbetween (lk(like T15?) where games that swwear and show bloof should be

Have you ever noticed that when a kid turns out to be a screw up the parents had nothing to do with it? Its always his friends, or the music he listens to. But when the kid turns out to be a success, who are the first ones to jump on the bandwagon?

And again, that's why I said this is a "PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN" laws. With that being said, there are some good parts. Certainly punishing retailers ISN'T a good thing, when the blame can go to parents for allowing their Kindergarten children to play GTA in the first place. But how do you enforce parents buying the games for their kids? You honestly can't without having the bedroom police.

Now the control chip is a good idea. This means that parents can effectively block what they don't want their children to play. This in no way is a substitute for parenting though, but I feel many parents will just set the chip and forget about their children because the chip will protect them. It's the parents' responsibility to protect their children, not some computer chips'.

Most kids don't get to attached to the game. They easily differentiate between the real world and the computer world. But some @#@@*^%$ kids cant, so they go get shotguns and shoot cars on the highway. They don't realize the consequences, or don't think about the consequences. Or maybe they are just plain stupid. Dont take that in the wrong way or anything.

Then game developers get sued by people who have too much free time and don't wanna address the real problem with their own kids. They just go and blame someone else. I used to always get blamed when I was in school for getting bad grades, even though my teachers sucked ass. Maybe thats why I learned to be more responsible and {censored}. I never even thought of stealing a chopper, parachuting off into a military base, stealing guns and killing people in Real Life. No thats what I have GTA SA for.

Parents need to teach kids to take responsibility for their own actions and think about the effect of their action on everybody else.

Thank God I dont live in the US, they have really weird laws there. (DCMA)
