bigcletus
Doom 3 in xp/vista on my machine plays decent. However, I was testing out the demo version under osx and it was pretty bad. Should this be expected or is something not setup properly on my system? Thanks. The code in the game is less optimised and BTW, in XP it's DirectX whereas it's OpenGL in OSX, so you can't really compare anything. Have you disabled FSAA ? Mac support for FSAA in Doom3 is horrible. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/47600-doom3-in-vistaxp-vs-osx/#findComment-340938 Share on other sites
Lactobacillus P
I don't necessarily agree with the fact that OSX games run slower than their windows cousins. A fine example is Prey that runs just as happy on Windows XP as it does on OS 10.4.8/10.4.9 Intel. But it is a different game so not fair to compare. Doom runs pretty ok on my machine too. track09
Simple as this DirectX>OpenGL for games (all except the Zealots know this) and NT kernel>Mach_kernel for games and many other performance areas. OMX-Knuckles
OpenGL support in 10.4 is borked, but then again, so is OGL performance in Vista. My X1800XT saw 40% performance drops in OGL games compared to Windows 2000 and XP. As long as yer getting playable framerates it doesn't matter if a certain OS gets a little lower than another. Anything over 30fps is a non-issue in anything except fast-paced FPS's and anything over 60 is just chest beating. cyclonefr
You guys should know that Doom 3 IS a OpenGL running game, even in Windows and isn't using DirectX. You should have great performances, actually I do, even with my poor AGP card (and you have a PCI-e one)... Don't know what's wrong... bigcletus
maybe my video drivers are not setup properly? I used the Natit dual v02 installer. Is there anyway I can check this? cyclonefr
Nah, you should be fine... Just look in System profiler and make sure that your GeForce is recognized as a PCI-e (notice the "e") card. wingk1314
make sure your doom is updated with the latest updates. That'll make it universal binary and will run at native speeds if you're using a intel processor. If not it'll run VERY VERY sluggishly. I tried coping the pk4 files from the discs into the demo version's base folder and using the 1.3 patch, but it asks for the disc every time even though the disc is in.
