naquaada
Hi there to all awaiting 10.4.9! I always had little to big troubles with all 10.4.8 install DVDs with problems noone else seemed to have or to care about. Now 10.4.9 updates are in the works, and this would be a good time to collect and correct the problems the users had before a 10.4.9 install DVD is created. This should NOT be something like 'put iLife '07 as standard installation on the DVD' or something, only a list of problems the users found to tell the developers/patchers (if there still are some) of a new installation DVD they should care about. Let's go now, here are the problems I found. Heavy problem: Disk Utility Some guys had problems booting after installation before defiant's patch. I didn't had it, but disk utility has another major problem: The restoring of a partition from a .dmg isn't possible. I use two boot partitions and so I can recover another partition from an disk image. Using disk utility 10.4.8 I get an 'Error -5308' for rewriting blocks, Error 19 'drive is not supporting' if I don't select to erase the partition before. Creating some special types of .dmgs are also problematic. This is the problem why I absolutely can't run 10.4.8 and I hope 10.4.9 doesn't have it anymore. There is a thread for the disk utility here http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=38125 but the problem doesnt seemed to be noticed at all. Heavy problem: Quicktime 7.1.3 on AGP 10.4.8 isn't useable on AGP machines anymore. OK, the AGPGart runs, but it's not very much faster than using the borisbadenow patch using PCI (I have a full working X1600 AGP). There's version 2.2 of the AGPGart out, but still not faster. V1.6 was amazing fast, but no CI/QE. The bigger problem is that iTunes 7 and Quicktime 7.1.3 are already are a standard part on the DVD. Quicktime 7.1.3 is much to slow on an AGP system, movies are stuttering, watching a DVD is absolutely impossible. The package installers are also removed, so it isn't even possbile to deinstall Quicktime 7.1.3. Please replace both programs with the older versions iTunes 6.05 and Quicktime 7.1.2. Easier problems: can be solved by deleting/replacing with older kexts - cpu to hot: delete AppleThermal.kext inside AppleACPIPlatform.kext - SATA not working on nForce 4 (works on nForce 3) - Windows network not working (replaced smbfs.kext) - Realtek 8139, IONetworkingFamily.kext, C-Media 8738 Audio had problems (not tested myself) Installation DVD: Try to create an install DVD that Apple would release officially :censored2: The looks of the optional installation is much better now, especially that the 'We stole it sucker' script is removed. But try sort it a bit better, maybe in IDE, Network, Audio, Graphics and so on. Implement a better description. There are two installers for the X1600, one in the most common drivers and the one in Titan. Why is this so? Printer drivers and optional languages maybe disabled as default, it saves about 2 GB and the installation is much faster. If there is not enough space on the disc anymore, delete printer drivers, not languages. Especially Epson has new Intel drivers on their website. A feature which nobody ever cared about is the language chooser: it always defaults to English after installating with another language after the installation is finished. This is a problem English-speaking users won't notice at anytime. It's not a major problem, but it would be another step to the perfect installation DVD. Personal Wishes: - 10.4.9 AMD support (I'm not alone with this, I think) - restore PCI support. A friend has no working ethernet in his board and USB-to-Ethernet adapters are very rare now. - A better working System Profiler. The one in 10.4.5 was the last version which showed an Audio entry (AC97 Audio) and there are a lot of other empty entries. 'About this Mac' shows my Athlon 64 FX-55 only as Athlon 64 (on 10.4.7 and 10.4.8). - A better name and type for our machines: Our computer name is still Apple Development System. I modyfied an entry in the System Profiler to X86basedMac, maybe somebody else has an better idea. Let's get rid of that ADP2,1 if possible and create an own machine ID for us. - A cool gag would be hack that changes every system text 'Intel' to AMD' as an option (AMD users will applaude now). To be compatible, change to 'x86'. - Nice would be other Audio formats than 48 kHz, but I don't think this would be easy. So, my list is long enough for now, I think. Now lets see what other members want to have in a new installation DVD. GreetinX from the Other Side, Naquaada. VooD
As far as I understand almost every request you make is related to the fact you are running an AMD computer (which will never run so good as Intel in osx) with an old mobo (you have AGP). I really believe, supporting old technology in osx is a waste of time (even though I´m running a +3 year old p4 2.6 sse and a radeon9600 agp). The focus must be stability not old hardware . joe75
My old AMD is plenty stable and so is AGP :censored2: Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/45557-1049-install-dvd-wishes-list/#findComment-325976 Share on other sites

Actually I seem to remember the original idea behind the OSx86 project was to achieve an objective that was something along the lines of "supporting as much hardware as possible and thus making OS X available to as many people as possible" hence Maxxuss brought us SSE2 support. richtig
I'd like support for Realtek 655 audio; other additional Realtek versions would also be good. Include support under System Preferences for other screen resolutions, instead of just the standard: 1024 x768 x32 @70Hz. Specifically: 1280 x1024 x32 @60Hz (for LCD support) 1152 x864 x32 @75Hz (for CRT support) JaS has stated that he won't be supplying any newer installer DVD, past the 10.4.8 release.. So, who's volunteered to do the work? naquaada
VooD: If you had read all you must have noticed that I own an Athlon 64 FX-55 processor which is not very effective for use on AGP boards. I also described only the problems, not the working features. Neonkoala is right: OSx86 should support so many computers as possible. Semthex also made kernels for SSE2 systems with a better emulation which is a base for supporting older machines. So we should use this feature and keep downward-compability, no Vista-like behaviour. Joblo's AGPGart is another good idea, but I don't know if he's continuing with it. Maybe some other one will care on this, I hope. To my systems: I have three AMD systems, one Athlon 64 3400+ SSE2/AGP and two PCI-e systems with Athlon 64 3700+ and Athlon 64 FX-55. All are equipped with X1600Pro's using borisbadenow patch on myzar's 10.4.7 installation. The systems are running 100% stable. The only program which wasn't running on AMD was the Parallels installer which checks for an genuine Intel CPU. After removing this check Parallels runs perfectly too. The problem is that my hardware was perfect from the beginning, the boards Asus K8N-E Deluxe (Socket 754, nForce 3, AGP) and Asus A8N-E Premium (Socket 939, nForce 4, PCI-e) had ideal onboard components (Audio, LAN, SATA) which wre working with myzars 10.4.6 image immediately. I only had to patch my X1600 and everything was working perfectly. So I don't had to check the more common problems other guys have. I always had problems with other things which are smaller and maybe not so common. This is why I made this list. atapreta: what do you mean with a REAL 10.4.9 image? asap18
just keep in mind that we need to keep the install on a single dvd, and with all these patches it can easily add up to over one dvd. naquaada
NeSuKuN: This isn't for implementing XYZ software here, like I said at the beginning. Only system-based updates. To the multimedia keys: If you have a Logitech keyboard, use the new drivers from their site. But they only work with USB, not PS/2. Volume and Mute is supported without drivers. But maybe somebody cares about a new keyboard driver? CPU temp & fan sensors would be a good idea. I actually check the cpu temp in BIOS after a reboot, but that's really not the best way. Dual core on AMD should work better if the CPU muliplier is set to 10.5, 11.5 or so, but not all boards support these settings. A friend has an X2 and it stutters sometimes. SiliconImage 3114 support would be handy, many boards have this controller onboard. I read that there is a driver for it somewhere, but never found it (ok, didn't searched for it long enough). I think the osx86-wiki should be rebuilt. There are much too many lists (10.4.5, 10.4.6 etc.) which only a few users need today. Sorted by CPU/Mainboard/Chipset/Graphics/Sound/Network etc. would be better. The device ID should be displayed in the list if possible, this would be easier for patching. asap18: let's degrade O'Neill back to Colonel status and get him to active duty again Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/45557-1049-install-dvd-wishes-list/#findComment-326146 Share on other sites
PaCresGon
I´d like a REAL 10.4.9, not a 10.4.4 upgrade one.
