Well I'm damned well diggin' it (and no, not "Digg", can't stand that site).

It's taking less RAM after booting, the processes are less than 5472, the ATI Vista driver (from ATI.com, not the Microsoft supplied one on Windows Update) is working nicely, and overall it's just fast as hell compared to older builds. They're really boosting the performance at this point, big time.

One important note I'll add just for the sake of helping out:

If and when you choose to do this, install Vista, if you do end up having a bug sometime and that error report pops up on screen, please submit it to Microsoft as requested. The primary reason they opened this pre-RC1 up for public downloading (I got mine from Connect, been a beta tester for over a decade and a half now so I can get anything) is because they're really approaching the crunch phase and trying their best to iron out all the possible bugs, so allowing 100,000 people to download pre-RC1 and actually use it can increase the number of "testers" considerably.

The bug reports DO help out the beta and production teams CONSIDERABLY and it's not costing you a thing except a few moments of bandwidth on your connection. It'll help make Vista better overall.

If you're running Vista just to complain about it, don't post anything in this thread, please. I'm curious to know about how well it runs on your equipment, your WinSAT scores (the "Experience" scores, typically ranging from 1 to 5 on most hardware, so post all of them, not just the composite total score) and anything you feel like sharing. Screenshots too, if you want. But not bitching and complaints. Thanks.

Here's one tip for most anyone that can help boost the performance just that much more, and it's rarely if ever mentioned (I've never seen it mentioned anywhere else, and I read a few hundred different forums weekly about Windows related stuff):

There's a setting that appeared in Windows Server 2003 that didn't exist in previous versions of Windows, and now Vista has it to. It's called "Enable advanced performance" and it works alongside the system cache to increase the amount of memory used for read- and write-caching to your hard drives. ATA/IDE, SATA, doesn't matter, this setting should be available and will improve performance by a small amount - and with Vista, the beast that it is, every little bit helps.

The setting is located in Device Manager - click on the Disk Drives icon or label, and on any drive(s) you may have, double click on the drive label and you'll get the drive properties. Click the Policies tab and you'll see this:

enableadvancedperformanceqc4.png

Check it like that pic shows, and wham, it's enabled. You might not notice it immediately, or at all really, but it does improve disk data transfer efficiency. I've used that setting with 2K3 in the past and it just makes everything snappier and more responsive.

So, get Vista installed and get crackin' on reports. :sorcerer:

I got 5536 installed last night.

I could not connect to the internet because my LAN port never worked and I lost my WiFi dongle (form what i saw in beta 2, it didnt work) so I need to find that.

My winsat score was a 2.0, im impressed. here are my hardwarem specs

512 RAM

902 MHz AMD Sempron

Nvidia 5200 graphics card (just made the cut off point for Aero)

Gigabyte mobo

dvd rom

So I was surprised to get above 1.8 (beta 2 score)

Flip 3d has no more jaggles.

So far i give it an A+ for going in the right direction

I was able to get this working today and it is running great. My only problem is Im not getting any sound. It says I have no audio devices installed. Seeing as how you seem to not have this problem, any help? Thanks a lot.

Beta 2 keys are good for 10 activations, so if you have an honest Beta 2 key that's still got activation capability, that's where it belongs and should work fine.

As for the sound issue, by default Vista doesn't include a lot of drivers for all types of hardware. The way to get those drivers is to hit Windows Update after the installation. Hopefully your NIC is going to be supported so you can do that, because here's what happens with my Dell Inspiron 4150 laptop (old one) when I install Vista:

It doesn't have drivers for the onboard 3Com NIC, so I have to use my D-Link Wi-Fi card to get the drivers from Windows Update. Up to build 5536 (pre-RC1), I had to install the Atheros drivers for this card manually; not anymore.

pre-RC1 has Atheros drivers in it, thankfully. Just pop in any Atheros-based Wi-Fi card and it should run with it; if you've got an Atheros-based mini-PCI or mini-PCI-E card it should already be working.

Hit Windows Update whenever or however you can with that installation of Vista and it should get the sound drivers you need.

Vista won't come with a huge backwards compatible driver database like all the previous versions of Windows came with - the idea is to cut down on the amount of {censored} on the install DVD. So when it's running, and if your NIC works, wireless or wired, you hit Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer to get the drivers for the other hardware.

Hope this helps,

bb

I just installed it on my old inspiron 8500 and it works great. It takes a minute or so to boot and start windows but after that it works awesome. I cant run aero (Only 64mb vram) but it otherwise everything works great.

I've still got to install some drivers vista to recognise my devices correctly. That'll probally make it go a little better. My specs are below:

2.4ghz P4-M

512mb Ram

64mb Vram Nvidia Geforce4 (6400 I think, im probally wrong though)

CDrw/DVD

60gig hd (only 20gig for vista, 40 for xp)

I installed on MBP and all is well, but I have not activated. If i activate, do I have to fill out a bunch of online info, or does it just "work"??? I cant remember under what name or email I originally got my beta 2 key, so if i gotta fill out online forms, i might be screwed, which is why I'm asking. Any assistance with this matter will be truly appreciated.

Yes they do, as I used my legit beta 2 key, however I had never installed beta 2 nor activated. I've recently been told that the key is good for up to 10 activations/uses?, but I cant say whether it is true or not.

its true

As previously stated, Beta 2 keys are good for 10 activations. If you just want to toy around with Vista, you can use is without activating it for a week or so to see how well it does or doesn't work on your hardware.

That's part of why they're releasing the pre-RC1 this way: the more bug reports the better, so if you get it and install it and it crashes, don't just click Close, send the info - it's not tied to you personally as most people believe. You can install Vista and not have to supply any personal info at all, really. If you're strictly interested in just playing around, fill in bogus info like your nickname or whatever you like.

ALWAYS use Flashget or equal to dl these ISOs. I use my beta 2 key to active this version. No problem at all.

I've been toying around with this the version the past 24hrs and it IS considerably faster (boot, reboot, shutdown, UI) then beta 2. These are the hardware I've gotten to work.

- AC97 MS driver (installed with driver update manager). Works without flaws. The realtek vista beta driver from dev site didn't work.

- ZD1211 wlan vista driver from developer's site. Works without flaw

- PixelView FM/TV tuner (BT878) works but remote not working properly. Gui is still not Aero capable and has error message with startng and stopping. Even with errors, you can still watch TV full screen and fast video rendering and use the controller to change channeles. Current PixelView BT878 drivers are not Vista compliant.

- ATI 9800 Pro proprietary drivers work with only one problem. GUI is sluggish over 60Hz refresh rate. @60Hz, GUI is as smooth as silk. Catalyst running flawlessly.

- Intel webcam works and works well with latest skype and YM!.

- Office 2007 Beta and One Note 2007 beta works great.

- Activesync and O2 Xda IIs PDA/Phone synced properly with Office, One Note, etc. Flawless.

* not tested: Bluetooth

I've been using this as my main OS now for the past 4 days, and I have to say, it's pretty damned good. I have the base 512 in my imac, and it runs close to, if not just as speedy as Mac os x. When the final version is put out, I'm pretty sure it will be well recieved (aside from the price... 400 for Ultimate  )

My only problems with the OS as a whole is that many of the little things that one would assume would be intuitive IS NOT. (It took me 2 mins to find the power settings control panel.) The options on the side of the preferences windows are way to subdued, considering some of them control major features.

But all in all, I think Microsoft may have a hit on their hands (took long enough, though.)

I got it installed, works great... noticed some issues with permissions... Sometimes my new folders dont appear till I refresh, and That bug seems to have transferred over to my XP install too.... I hope its just a phase. I got a nice 4.1 on the performance advisor

BTW all: I have found a supposedly real build 5552 ISO floating around... I'm gonna check it out. I have read on it and it's supposedly going to be similar or same to the RC1 release and that it's the internal pre-RC1.

I do not like how vista handles their drivers, in beta 2 my ethernet card worked automatically but but my audio didn't. In build 5472 my audio drivers worked but my ethernet card didnt. Now that i've installed build 5536 my ethernet card works but my audio didnt. luckily i still had the installation drivers.

I'm installing 5552 right now on my laptop, but 5536 was really fast and stable, I liked it a lot!

Now it deserves to be my main OS on both laptop and desktop (since I can't install OS X on my desktop anymore since I moved to a P5B Deluxe -Intel P965- mobo). I guess I can install it with a pata to usb converter for my dvd drive but well, that's off topic :(

Driver and application compatibility improved a lot also. Finally Mobile GMA950 users got fully working drivers that support aero glass without a glitch (Before you needed to force windows to load the desktop GMA950 driver, which on some laptops caused problems to sleep/hibernate and graphic artifacts... and reduced battery life). TCP/IP stack works a lot better than XP and the system in general is really responsive, it just uses a lot more of RAM but well, that's how the PC industry evolves I guess.

So far I'm satisfied with the performance of Vista, I hope Microsoft will continue on this good track!

How can you say the stack is better. They totaly made a new one other than steal it from openBSD. I have also heard there are problems
