hoskoau.Nice setup you got there ;) are you running hdmi ? I have a 55" on the way just wondering if any issues with video,

also a gulftown 6core thats going to give me some issues ,but I hope not.

I pretty sure that is a sleep enabler error that one I sent you was for 10.6.3

I have it running ;)!! also I get the 2048x1152 resolution and SL fully working on SSD OCZ drive :D. I cant get working the internal sound card... do you know something?

 • 2 weeks later...

I have a nicely working 10.6.3 on X58A-UD7. Everything except ethernet.

I mean, it works fine but my network speeds cap at about 10MBs. This is on my local gigabit network. I use RealtekR1000SL kext.

Can anyone else report what kind of LAN speeds you are getting with this board?

Update:

I guess I figured it out with the help from this post. Needed to set connection parameters manually, gigabit speed, full duplex.

I'm now getting ~50MBs. Makes much more sense.

At last 5.1 dsdt and audio midi setup in link

Good work! How did you manage it? I still can't get past 'internal speakers' and the 2 'line out' s that are listed in profiler don't seem to be connected to anything. Still trying, though.

Going Bald

Wondering if you can help me

I used the Kakewalk install on the

X58A-UD3R a Geforce 9800 GT and i7 920

I found that when it finishes the boot screen the display goes black.

The problem is the GraphicsEnable = Yes flag. If I take it out I can boot into VESA 800x600 mode.

But I cannot get the graphics card to come up otherwize.

Anyone?

Thanks

Hi all,

I just installed 10.6 on my newly built computer using Kakewalk. I was extremely excited to see the Apple desktop on a custom rig, but I've had a couple of problems. I've been scanning these boards and the general interwebs for a long time trying various different kexts and solutions to no avail so I turn to you for help.

It's two common problems from what I've been reading - no sound and no ethernet.

My rig:

Gigabyte ga-x58a-ud7

intel core i7 930

12 gb corsair ram (6x2)

evga nvidia 9800 gt 1gb

1 tb HDD (boot) + 2 tb HDD

LG sata dvd drive.

I think that's the relative info. Oh and I've been using kext utility to install the kexts.

The sound doesn't show any output devices so I can't even choose a different one form the system preferences as some on the Kakewalk thread have suggested. I tried the ALC889A.fix.kext - though of course the ud7 has the ALC889 (no A) chip. I tried using HDAEnabler. I've tried a couple of different AppleHDA.kexts - unfortunately I don't remember the exact ones.

Any suggestions on that one?

Then for the ethernet. The computer seems to recognize the ports - they come up in Network Preferences, but when I have a cable attached as I do now, it simply says "Not Connected." I've tried a variety of r1000.ktexts as well as the actual OSX drivers from Realtek.

Thoughts?

I'm new at this. Definitely not an expert hackintosher or hacker of any type I suppose (hence why I used Kakewalk). I'm going to try formatting the USB stick again in case I messed that up somehow (though I'm fairly certain I didn't) and reinstalling in the morning, but if you guys have got any other suggestions I'd truly appreciate them.

Thanks a bunch.

I have a similar setup. Fiddled with different kexts for ages then just used tonymac's ##### and was up and running in minutes with the audio.

I too have a similar system Gigabyte GA-x58a-ud7

Intel Core i7 930 and the audio is not working.

Which version of bios you have?

Exactly what you selected in the installation of audio ##### to solve the problem? Before you start the application you've removed something in treating extensions or not?

Thanks for your help

I'll definitely give that a shot - though I woke up this morning having changed nothing and the internet was working on the machine. So maybe now if I can just toy with the audio....

I'll definitely prepare a boot stick with tonymac's stuff though.

Thanks a bunch for the suggestion.

Just thought I'd let you all know I got it up and running. Whoop there it is!

I ended up using Kakewalk. Used the guide pretty much to the T except I restored the USB stick from the actual DVD instead of an image. Then I used #####, installing the Legacy889, HDAEnabler, and the VoodooHDA 2.56. Also deleted the LegacyHDA from the Extra/Extensions folder.

Yay.

I'm thinking of putting in a second graphic card, but have seen that people have had some trouble with that. I have a Nvidia GeForce GT120 for the mac pro - had it lying around. Anyone had any luck working two graphics cards?

 • 2 weeks later...

Has anyone got Speedstepping working on their X58A UD7? I have BIOS Rev 6. I've tried reading some threads on editing my DSDT.aml but that's a bit over my head. I have my i7 930 overclocked to 4.1ghz and it runs a bit hot without the Speedstepping. I'd really appreciate some help....

Bad news for all ATI users. From what I have read in other forums Apple will not further support ATI cards. It looks like NVidia will be the chose of video card from now on. I know this is not good news. I spent tones of time and money just to find out I will be out of luck. First I bought a ATI 5870, then ATI 4860. And none would work. And also when SL or even L finished install and at reboot I never saw the screen where you see all the different languages popping out at you until I installed my new NVidia GTS 250 1GB card. For all those who are having trouble install SL that has ATI card not listed will not be able to install SL. These ATI cards are know to work ( 2600 series, 3000 series, some 4800 series ( 4850, 4870 without further patches, and 4890 with patches ). I hope this will help answer some of your question. Good luck.

 • 4 weeks later...

Hello all, I am new to this site (as some of you are as well) and will probably be joining in with questions, but for now I will be starting on our M-Hak Pro build.

Hopefully (since this is my first build) I won't blow things up; unlike what just recently happened.

BTW, do you know what got me to this point of doing my own M-Hak Pro? Great, I'm glad you asked. Well it all started when I bought a "used" Mac Pro (Dual Intel Xeon 3.0 v.1,1) system that was out of warranty. Took the chance anyway. Well as good fortune would have it, I was using my Mac Pro with a 30" Dell monitor at max res - 2,560 x 1600. Now my lovely and "powerful" ATI X1900 card started acting up. I started seeing weird artifacts and my machine started to freeze (about a DOZEN TIMES IN ONE DAY !!!). Well... the ATI card said it could read it; guess not. At this point I've had it. Here's where my cynicism and sarcasm starts to kick in, so please forgive me but I have to kind of vent here. So here we go...

I brought my whole unit into Apple's "Genius-Bar" (appropiately named). I told The "Geniuses" it was bought used and is out of warranty, then after they scanned the back of the unit they basically told me it was out of warranty. Didn't I just say it was out of warranty? I guess they needed to educate me on something that I already explained to them. Then they told me that the unit was "unrepairable." I said "what, what do you mean "unrepairable."?" Again, they said the same thing "sir, it's "unrepairable." "okay, I don't think I explained myself well enough; define "unrepairable."" (you see you have to explain things like this to them, not all of them, just real bright ones). Well they "enlightened" me. They said, since the unit was NEVER registered and it's also out of the warranty period we cannot repair it. Now that's when my "Genius" kicked in and I said - "WHAT?!?!" (you see that happens when you hang around these Apple Genius guys long enough, you start becoming and thinking like one of them). They explained it again. Well at this point I said "Wait, you're not going to allow me to be ripped off by you guys? Now that's a twist."

Well I took my broken unrepairable unit home and started googling "mac repair." Found a few guys out there and chose one. Called him and he proceeded to tell me about purchasing a used XFX ATI 4870 (it had to be this one for this particular Mac) and "flashing" it for me. I said "What's flashing mean?" That's when it began; my journey... into building my own M-Hak Pro for myself but coming into this community working together with the rest of you so that I'm not by myself. So for that I'm thankful... But enough of my "tear jerking" moment here, now onto the rest of the story.

Right after everything was fixed, he tested everything out to make sure it was working perfectly and then I brought it home. I connected everything and started my Mac Pro only to hear a big - POP !!! Then I saw smoke... This can't be good. Well it wasn't, I blew out EVERYTHING !!! But funny enough NOT the graphics card - LOL !!! But I wasn't laughing. I come to find out after spending much time researching the unit and everything connected to the machine that it was a frayed Fire Wire connector. You see there's a little plastic piece that's in the center of that connector that keeps all the little connecting wires separate from each other. I didn't know this, but that is what caused the short and blew out EVERYTHING. I started feeling like one of the "Geniuses" from the Apple Store. I truly wanted to cry, I lost 10 months worth of work for our business - EVERYTHING. I usually back up everything once every 2 months on DVD, but using my external 250GB WD external My Book HD I never had any issues, so I bought a 2TB one; again thinking I'll never have any issues, right? Wrong !!! Man, was I humbled !!! Well I it was off to go buy a new Mac but I started reading about the new series of Mac Pros coming out soon and wanted to wait. So I figured I would used my older Mac for day to day stuff, but as I started looking on the web and noticed some videos on YouTube that showed quite a few people configuring and installing Mac OS X Leopard on their PCs, that started to get me thinking. What PUSHED me over and sold me on the idea was this video:

When it got to 2:28 minutes into the video my jaw dropped open. Then I couldn't stop LAUGHING !!! I had to watch it again. I knew there was going to come a day when I was going to see this happen; I'm talking about the SPEED, but I thought this was going to happen ON a Mac, NOT a PC. Then, I contacted the guy who put this video together and also found this sight... and well, here I am wanting to outreach to all of you as well. I found this link a few days ago and finally wanted to introduce myself. My build is almost complete and here's the lineup:

-Silverstone Fortress FT02 Black w/window

-Core i7 930 CPU Overclocked to 4.01 Ghz (I may try 4.5 Ghz but that will depend on the processor and it's limits)

-Premium Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 Water Cooling Motherboard with additional heatsink

-XSPC Dual Pump & Bay Reservoir

-Koolance PMP-400 Pumps (YES I have two of them - one pump for the MOBO and one pump for the CPU)

-Koolance CPU-360 water block for the CPU

-Koolance HX-CU1020V High Flow 3x120mm Radiator

-Koolance HX-CU1401V High Flow 1x120mm Radiator

-Tygon Tubing (ID: 10mm (3/8"); OD: 16mm (5/8")

-Koolance fittings throughout (ID: 10mm (3/8"); OD: 16mm (5/8")

-12GB GDDR3 1600Mhz Corsair Dominator RAM Kit (w/fan)

-1x128GB SSD Corsair Drive 220MB/S Read 200MB/Sec Write for Windows 7

-Replacing all Silverstone fans with their higher model Silverstone fans that create even more "positive pressure" within the tower

-1x100GB SSD OCZ Vertex 2 SSD 285MB/S Read 260MB/Sec Write for Mac OS X 10.6.3 (or 10.6.4).

-1x600GB Velociraptor for Backup and Storage

-LG Blu-Ray 10X Burner and Reader

-Sony Dual-Layer DVD+/- RW Drive

-2xXFX GTX 280 Graphics Cards (we're using these specific cards because this is the highest version of an Nvidia card that will allow Mac OS X to work). In the end we may be using only one card instead of two depending on how Mac OS X will work with it.

-Silverstone ST1500W - 1500 Watt PSU (Fully Modular and a link explaining the reason to purchase such a powerful PSU: http://www.silverstonetek.com/tech/wh10_005.php?area=usa)

Well, there you have it. Again, I'm grateful for people like Paulo out there, breaking the mold and creating something better FOR LESS !!! As I believe it should be... I guess it's not a bad thing now for the rest of us, but not everyone is going to want to do it. Some will want to keep it "easy," purchase a Mac Pro and don't mind paying double (or in this case 3 times) the price for it, but I don't find this to be so hard. Actually the build process is rather fun because NOW we are not held back by fewer choices and steeper prices.

You know the kicker of this whole thing? I'm NOW a reseller for all these PC parts companies out there !!! So if you need anything from Gigabyte, Koolance, Silverstone, XSPC, NZXT, CoolerMaster, Corsair, or pretty much any other PC part company out there, I can get it for you. So just let us know.

We'll see where this goes and I'll keep you updated when I'm finished and see if I can post a few pics and even a vid review on YouTube when our build is complete. I'm going to continue praying this all works, since this is our first build. I think I'll be a little bit more careful this time... LOL... If you've read all of this thank you, and I hope you had a good laugh or two (at my expense). Post your thoughts if you have any. Now onto using the UD7 MOBO and trying to get Mac OS X installed. Later for now... :(

Thanks for the story. Normally I don't read these long stories, but yours is very nice to read ;)

Be sure to check kexts.com for the UD7 USB image I posted, it only uses 3 kexts and it works like magic!

Sorry Cybex, I found it. It was actually right in your "sig" and it linked right to it. But can you in "n00bs" (easy) terms explain to me how to fully install this thing I don't understand what this means:

After restoring USB image to an USB stick (DiskUtility) you should install the bootloader: (Use DiskUtility (right click, get info) to get rdisk number, in this example we use rdisk0)

Install boot0 to the MBR: sudo fdisk -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdisk0

Install boot1h to the partition's bootsector: sudo dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2

Install boot to the partition's root directory: sudo cp boot /

Again, I say - huh ??? ;) Thanks...

One last thing, before I have another "one last thing" to ask, I want to update to 10.6.4, and am using 10.6.3. Should I just use the regular 10.6.4 update (1.15GB of space) or 10.6.4 combo update (1.75GB of space). Mind you I just bought the newest version of Mac OSX Snow Leopard that has 10.6.3, and don't know if I need the "combo" or not. Again, whatever help you can give would be great...

Hi PunkNugget,

I don't have much time, but I'll try to summary it:

1) Download the diskimage and mount it

2) Copy all files to your new USB stick (or HDD, doesn't matter)

3) Find the rdisk number of the USB stick or HDD ((Use DiskUtility (right click, get info) to get rdisk number, in this example we use rdisk0))

4) Download a bootloader, for example Aserebln

5) Extract it

5.1) Open a Terminal in Mac OS X and change directory to the bootloader. Just type "cd" and drag the directory in the Terminal. It will be replaced by the path, for example: "cd /Users/John/Desktop/bootloader/"

6) Type the following commands Be sure to replace the rdisk number if needed!

sudo -s
fdisk -f boot0 -u -y /dev/rdisk0
dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2
cp boot /Volumes/VOLUMENAME/ (REPLACE VOLUMENAME WITH THE VOLUMENAME OF THE USB STICK OR HDD)
exit

7) Make sure the biossettings are correct (use AHCI, 64bit hpet, etc (google for all settings)) and make sure your bootdevice is set to the HDD / USB Stick you just created.

I hope I didn't forget anything, goodluck!

I'll try to do the best I can to understand all this. Thanks for your help. About the update thing for Mac 10.6.4. Should I use the bigger "combo" file or the smaller one. I'm thinking the smaller one since I already have 10.6.3 installed from a the newer OS X Snow Leopard disc. Again, thanks for your help...

Hey Cybex,

I just tried to do what you said and I was right, I want to cry - LOL... I can't figure this thing out. I right clicked on my SSD (where I opened the Boot (v1.3) and mounted it) using Disk Utility. I don't see an rdisk just where it says "disk identifier: disk7. I guess that's it... Whatever help you can still impart would be great, thanks...

Hi Cybex, How you doin'? Everything's almost fine here I was going to install things from the USB drive but what does this "bootloader" do and where do I put it with everything.

You know, what would really be great if there was a full tutorial on how to do this correctly from beginning to end. Because the way it's laid out right now the "only uses 3 kexts and it works like magic!" situation, isn't quite working like magic... at least not for me...

I wish I had your experience and know how so I wouldn't have to ask how to do this... Again, I'm sorry for bothering you. If you can help that would awesome. Thanks...
