FYI for everyone having problems with external CD/DVD drives. I was getting an error also and almost gave up until I actually unplugged the drive from the mini a couple of times. So when you get the error unplug the drive from the mini the error will repeat until you plug the drive back in. After doing this a couple times it seemed to work fine. YMMV.

THANK YOU!! :D

This worked for me... just keep plugging and unplugging until it forces drive to spin up.

I have OS X installing now... :)

Every time I try to boot the computer hangs after swapping discs. Sometimes it gets to the bootloader screen "Loading Darwin X86" but it never gets to loading the actual OS. I have tried two different DVD drives (using the same ATA -> USB bridge each time). I used a DVD for the boot 132 disk since I have no CD-R's, that shouldn't matter, should it? I am about ready to give up and use one of the hacked install discs like JaS.

Also, I have been using my 10.5.2 media, I just got a copy of 10.5.4 that I will try tonight, I can't imagine that it would make a difference, but I suppose anything is worth a shot at this point.

EDIT:

I missed that one, I'll have to try that too. Do you mean just unplug and replug until it boots (w/o power cycling / reloading the Boot 132 disk), or do you mean reboot, replug and try again?

This appears to be a legacy usb bios issue; it seems that if you unplug some external usb drives and let them spin up again, it gets past this issue.

Once the os is installed, it works as expected.

I think I'm going to try this whole thing tonight (finally got my IDE>USB adapter!)...

Quick question first: I keep hearing people say they had to enable Bluetooth in Windows before re-installing for it to work in OS X. Is it disabled by default? I haven't touched any Bluetooth settings in Windows. Where are they?

If you enable it in Windows is it going to be always-on in OS X? Would we maybe gain battery life by disabling it in Windows first?

I really don't want to have to put Windows back on this thing, so I wanted to ask before it's too late. Thanks!

You have to run the installer again for audio.

As these things keep coming up, I've decided to go ahead and add a system pref for the Mini 9. It looks like this:

it should be done to day, in a little while.

Thanks, darkten, and to everyone who worked on this project. I've been running Leopard on my Dell MacBook Nano for two days now with no problems... except the audio issue.

I installed the ALC268_Installer1 on 10.5.4, tried the mini9 preferences app, installed Chromatophore and made sure there weren't any changes that needed t be activated, but I never got audio to work. In System Preferences it simply says "no audio devices found."

So I updated to 10.5.5, still no audio, reinstalled ALC269_Installer1 and tried all the things I mentioned before.

Anyone have a clue? Like the Bluetooth issue, was it possibly something I did wrong in XP before installing Leopard?

I did do a complete clean install of XP (for other reasons) from the Dell system CDs before loading Leopard and thought I had also installed all the pertinent drivers, including audio, but I have to admit I'm not sure.

I'm willing to reinstall Leopard -- can I do that without re-installing XP first or would that give me the same result with the audio that I have now?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

So I tried this today using the instructions found on the uneasysilence article. It installed very smoothly and actually runs very smoothly. I've come across a few issues... I will search the 20+ pages of this thread once I have the time to find some of the answers... but here's my results so far.

First my specs: Dell Mini 9... 1.6ghz Atom, 1GB Ram, 8GB HDD. I was conserned about the 8GB HDD not being enough... but it did install, with 1.1GB left over. See I don't really have an issue with this... but I really hope I can get the built-in card reader working, as I have an 8GB SDHC that I use for all my data. The actual HDD is only for the OS/Apps/Daily-Files (bookmarks, etc).

Overall I got the wireless and audio working no problems. The SD reader (and USB ports, won't reconize a card reader, but the DVD-drive is OK). I've seen a few suggestions on how to fix and will try later. Bluetooth doesn't really matter to me. Another thing I'd like to work is the scroll feature that I was using in Windows, doesn't need to be multitouch, but if the edges can be used again for scrolling that'd be fine.

Ok some more progress. I got the battery indicator totally working. It now knows if it is plugged in or not and it gives time remaining. I have attached the files as MiniBattery.zip

PowerManagement.bundle goes into /System/Library/SystemConfiguration (Make sure it is owned by root:wheel)

AppleACPIBatteryManager.kext goes into normal place, use kexthelper to be safe

Also closer on the sleep issue. I can now get it to go to sleep from sleep menu item or when shutting the lid. The light throbs as it should. Opening or hitting power button if screen is open brings it back

HOWEVER once it is back on there is no cursor or keyboard. I don't think it i frozen though.

If anyone wants to mess with it I have them packaged as MiniSleep.zip. Use kexthelper to install the 3.

hopefully more tomorrow. almost there...

Think this is the post I did you were looking for darkten, page 6 ;-)

MiniBattery.zip

MiniSleep.zip

Well...wake from sleep doesn't work. You're done :) Everything else you mentioned above does in fact work.

With stuff that is known to work, and people having a problem, don't really know what to tell you.

you get yerself from a dell mini 9 the most compatable mac osx netbook out there *out of the box*.

that makes me sad, I think the MSI Wind is fully supported except for the sound output jacks, which will probably be fixed soon

Same exact problem here... I just did a successful install using the Mini9-132EZ method w/ Leo retail dvd.

Only thing not working is the sound... :)

Is there a file missing somewhere that we need? Seems like many of us are having this issue.

If so, could you please repost the file here, or point me to the message # of this thread?

thanks!

FrontRow works for me too just takes some time first load maybe? Did for me...

On the audio problems this is very strange, I have done about 7 iatkos installs and 10 other installs using the leopard retail dvd and a couple times I might have had to reinstall the driver but it always ended up working. I wonder if we are not seeing something done in windows (perhaps with softkeys?) or something like that because if not I am not sure I understand it.

One other interesting note. Not that I am a big fan of not using he vanilla kernel but if it gets me sleep possibly I will give it a try. Anyway tried voodoo kernel beta 2 and sleep does not work with it either. Just another data point. This was on my EFI partition. Perhaps someone who has done darkten's method should also try. It is very easy get the zip move kernel over and point to it from boot prompt (if you name it something but mach_kernel it is dang near impossible to need anything but a reboot to fix it). Anyway just thought I would put this point out there.

sound works here, tho.

Hmm, weird... Darkten, it appears that some of us that have used your Mini9-132EZ method with retail Leo are having the same problems with audio... Is it possible that you left something out, or forgot to mention a setting to change?

Not trying to sound ungrateful, lol, just that a few of us are having the same problems with this. Thanks!

Well, I install from what was posted, so nothing is left out...as for settings...i didn't change anything.

I simply ran the installer and rebooted.

Perhaps you guys should post screenshots of the contents of your extra folder?
