I was prepared to drop about four grand on a new mac pro setup mainly to be used for post production video work. How much would it cost to build a hackintosh comparable or even more powerful than a high end mac pro? That budget does not include a display. Many thanks

Just get a high end mac pro..... its not worth to spend 4G on a hackint0sh

Although this is the conventional wisdom, it wasnt what the OP asked, and the idea of spec'ing out a seriously high-end PC with all osx compatible parts is a droolworthy proposition. If nothing else, I hope some people have some creative suggestions for a kickass fantasy hackintosh: Bring 'em on! :D

A suggestion:

2 x Intel Xeon X5462 2.8 GHz

Here's my stab at a dual Xeon HackPro. No idea if it'd actually work or not.

Updated: SuperMicro board rather than Intel skulltrail.

16GB of RAM

Cheaper than previous build.

Something I just noticed too, spec'ing out a MacPro to match, to put the price of a system like this in stark perspective. Apple charges $3,500 for JUST the 16GB of RAM. :) They charge twice the going rate for HDs. $100 for the pretend 'superdrive'.

Granted, the core system is a good deal, but the add-ons are highway-freakin'-robbery.

Buy a tricked out Mac Pro? :P

im sure if he wanted to buy a mac pro he wouldn't be on this now would he?

and what if he wants a good gaming pc too? to run windows? ik the mac pro can run windows and prob handle most games but the mac pro is more a server than a desktop. and the hackintosh experience is a great experience!

Skulltrail dual 771 board (check)

2 E5440 Harpertown Xeons (?)

FBDIMMS (?)

1200W PSU for board- (Works? Overkill?)

It is not advisable to get 800MHz FB DIMM if the processor's FSB is 1333 MHz...

Rule of thumb when it comes to workstations: Get 800MHz FB DIMM if the processor's FSB is 1600 MHz, or 667 MHz FB DIMM if the processor's FSB is 1333 MHz.

And anyway I am not a fan of the skulltrail because the SLI it offers is useless when it comes to hackintoshes (since OS X doesn't support SLI), and the RAM is limited to 8 GB, and so on.

Better off getting a Tyan or Supermicro board.

Four words.

Skulltrail Quad Core Hackintosh. :)

THIS x1000. For $4000, skulltrail is great for a multiple core system. If you just want 2 quad core xeons, then just go with the lga771 xeons, and the skulltrail mobo. Which you are, which is a good move. :D

atm skulltrail wont work with 2 cpu's in osx86.

altho another alternative is: Asus' Z7S : all works oob (execpt for firewire, I havent sat down to figure it out atm)

takes dual socket 771 procs, fb-dimms 667/800 (up to 24gb), alc888 sound (full hd)

all in all, I love this board.

heres what i have runing in mine : http://diabolik1605.com/G5/specs.php

Thanks, Purple Puppy. I wish I had the cash to actually try one of these builds.

That Supermicro board in your list looks awesome, and cheaper than the Intel board.

That's a rule of thumb, for sure.

But, some chip sets are tolerant of 800 MHz RAM in 1333 MHz FSB's, while some aren't.

OC'ing my Q6600 and E8400 both resulted in exceeding 667 MHz for PC2-5300 RAM, and 1333 MHz for the FSB, yet PC2-5300 RAM worked just fine at 688.89 MHz, whereas I DID settle on PC2-6400 for those machines.

The limitation is more likely to be the NB, not the RAM.

My two machine's NB's were stable at 1377.78 MHz, but failed at 1380.00 MHz.

I can certainly see where the RAM would be a limiting factor, particularly if the NB could tolerate a 1600 MHz OC.

The Q6600 Quad Core 95W goes like hell (especially if you overclock it to 3 GHz+ ... costs around 110 Euro. Some cheap (working) mainboard, a WD Raptor Harddrive and a lot of RAM and you're fine ... you don't need 4Ks ...

You are totally missing the point. He doesn't want an el cheapo hack. Otherwise a Mac Pro would be a lot better.

It is like suggesting to buy a city car to somebody who has a Ferrari in mind.

if you READ my post w/ my setup page you can see i do have about the same setup as he wanted with a few exceptions of the mobo and gpu (mines a g92 8800gt 1gb).

its as vanilla as you can possibly get, no editing ata kexts, no editing network kexts. 99% works oob (firewire is the one exception).

and guess what its already been tested and works great.
