LioNEXT
10.5.4 is available from software update and apples website. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ If you already have 10.5.3, then use the 10.5.4 update file (88mb) or use the combo update if doing from other versions. I check up with Pacifist, and it doesn't change much of system extension; only these three: IO80211Family.kext IPfirewall.kext System.kext Nothing that should affect most of the users. Your About this Mac will be screwed though. Looks like it can be installed directly from software update. Update: Security update 2008-004 also available separately, but is included with the 10.5.4 update I used 10.5.4 update (88mb) and everything work fine. Even About this mac is correct. With my office computers Xeon 5130, even shutdown/restart is working with 9.4.0 kernel. will test on my home computer also. Caution: I may be wrong here but my feeling is that all you folks using combo updater will get nuked if you simply hit install (open combo updater with pacifist and check if you have that InstallatFirstStartUp in /System folder). I think combo updater (which includes previous updates also) will use the strategy of 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 version and therefore you would need to use that "while sleep 1 ...." thingy in Terminal. Use this only if you are directly updating from 10.5.3 and only on core2duo or core2quad system. if you are using older intel or amd, refer more on the forums for others' suggestions/experiences. Biovital
I updated all the software that needed updating. GarageBand and iMovie worked (they wouldnt load before). I then did the combo update. It hung at 14%, locking up the system. Hit reset, now my OSX install is completely nuked. Gotta do a reinstall later. newbmac
Well, it hosed my Pentium D system. 10.5.2 Kalyway DVD installed Updated with 10.5.3 Kalyway Combo Update - mod kernel Updated to 10.5.4 via Software Update Endless reboot cycle. All you Pentium Dual core folks are essentially Core 2 Duo computers that can run vanilla. If you run a Pentium D or any other NON-Core type CPU, don't use the Apple Update. If you were using a mod-kernel before, it would have replaced your default with the vanilla kernel for the current update. 39thRonin
I just upgraded my Pentium 4 from 10.5.3 (Jas upgrade over Leo4All 10.5.2) to 10.5.4 with no issues. 1) Downloaded 88mb Delta Upgrade package. 2) Used Pacifist to open package from the mounted DMG 3) Selected everything *EXCEPT* kernel and kernel.ctfg files 4) Selected Install from Pacifist menu 5) After install, I rebooted and at the command line used the -v and -f flags. My system retained all the important stuff - System Profiler, About this Mac, CI/QE, sound, etc. Everything works great - and it seems quite a bit snappier after the upgrade... I think thats what I have come to conclusion. Use 88 mb package only. in your case, do you have a modded kernel for pentium 4 (sorry i have clue about older intels). otherwise, the new kernel seems benign from my experience. Oddly, I no longer need Netkas 9.2.0 modified kernel for shutdown/restart. My Xeon 5130 based xw8400 workstation shuts-off and restart just fine with the vanilla kernel. (sleep is still an issue, which i think is caused by firewire on this mobo). As we know software update always replaces the kernel with the next release such as 9.4. When we update like this we need to place back the old kernel atleast untill the nation makes a new hacked one for this release. I always keep some of my old kernels on the root partition so i can just use one at the boot prompt if needed regards, Swole Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/113307-1054-software-update/#findComment-803118 Share on other sites
