I bet it will be unlockable. I dont think they'd try to tighten up security unless ATT pressured them into it.

Even if they did tighten up security, activating/unlocking/jailbreaking it will still probably be possible. I have great faith. Does anyone know if an external Bluetooth GPS would work well with the iPhone... whether current or supposed 3G

It's with GSM for the next 5 years, thank GOD! CDMA is a curse, a disease, a scam invented by cellular companies to ensure vendor lock-in, and they temp you into it with higher speeds. Just say no to CDMA.

No, CDMA is the old analogue format, and GSM is newer and fully digital.

This is not correct. They are different technology approaches to reach a goal. The primary difference is CDMA basically tells all people using it to COME ON IT and divides bandwidth accordingly on the fly. The issue is that the more users you get the worse the quality. It's good for cell phone companies as they can expand coverage rapidly. Also CDMA tends to use parts of the spectrum that allow for greater distances but poorer penetration. Meaning you can get twice as far with a CDMA tower, but in a city you need more since the don't get thru the walls as well.GSM is channel coded. Which means it has so many SLOTS. GSM has better call quality but suffers from *All lines are busy* issue. Towers don't travel so well so it's usually a poor choice for Rural areas *unless you are using 450 mhz *shutters*. The penetration is better though so in urban environments you get good signals indoors.CDMA though IS very power hungry. Even more so the UMTS. Usually you need a much bigger battery to achieve the same life. But one-day there WILL be a CDMA market, since South Korea and Japan are WAY TO HUGE of markets to ignore. Unless they have UMTS *which they might, Asian cell technologies are the only thing that travel faster then the speed of light*.

Well, thats not compleatly true, besides sprint who insists you buy a phone from them to use on there network, verizon, and alltel, will allow you to buy or transfer your phone from another network, Its just a little more complicated then the SIM card swap, because you have to call your older provider to detach the phones "id". then call the new provider and give them the phone ID.(the ID I speak of is one of those long numbers printed with a bar code, underneath your CDMA phones battery).

 

Besides the fact, There are Several GSM phones, that are "locked" to there network, where they'll only accept simcards from the network you bought them through, so you have to go through the process of "unlocking the phone" to move on to other providers anyway...

 

BTW, 3G, stands for 3rd Generation, which dosn't spicificly specify which actual technoligy is being used, there are Several different 3g Mobile phone standards, check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3G

 

GSM for example is a 2G. UMTS which is based of GSM, is 3G.

CDMAone is 2g, while CDMA2000 is 3G.

I don't know but that's why I'm not buying a new Touch right now. I know you can 'update' it for $9, but surly the units being sold after mid-July should include this update right?
