Using your modified SB AICPM gives me different results on my 3930k/Rampage IV Extreme Bios 4702.   From what I can tell I get 2 steps with it, 12x and 40x(my system is OC'd).  I used Intel..., HWSensors, and MSRdumper because I'm unable to verify using AICPUPMI without it freezing my system when loaded after boot, and KPs on boot if loaded before.

 

X86PlatformPlugin does not load and I get no errors regarding an attempt to load it.  IOReg is showing that ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin though.  What I also find strange is that this bios wouldn't let me OC in OSX before even when using NullCPU, but with your patched AICPM it OCs fine.

 

Perhaps my system is set up a bit different from others.  I don't use a DSDT, but rather an SSDT with fixes contained inside.  Plugin-type one for C000 is added to my SSDT.

 

I'll run some more tests when I get home this evening and try to post some logs.

You are definitely not setup properly for this test - please look at my first post. Your system should not be loading ACPI_SMC, which means your plugin-type is not set correctly on the proper CPU node.

 

i7-3930k is the same core as my Xeons and I think you would have the same results like me, so what I can suggest is to get your SSDT fixed up first and then try again.

I know this isn't on the CPU list, but with my i7-3820 on an ASUS Sabertooth X79 motherboard I can now get P-States 12, 37, and 38.

Using MacPro6,1 SMBIOS and not XCPM (set plugin-type to zero). If I set the plugin-type to 1 my CPU only gets P-State 12.

It's strange that you are not getting the same result as I am because we have exactly the same CPU cores in our CPUs (Xeon 26xx vs i7-3930) so this has to be related to your configuration.

 

I'm testing some new patches and also have found a way to get a better debug output from X86PlatformPlugin as well so I'll post about that soon.

Strange indeed. I've been playing with BIOS settings no real changes in output.

You are definitely not setup properly for this test - please look at my first post. Your system should not be loading ACPI_SMC, which means your plugin-type is not set correctly on the proper CPU node.

 

i7-3930k is the same core as my Xeons and I think you would have the same results like me, so what I can suggest is to get your SSDT fixed up first and then try again.

 

Okay, so I redid my DSDT(making sure the plugin-type was correct) and I was able to get my system to finally load X86PlatformPlugin.  The issue I have now though, is that I'm able to have the plugin load without errors, but my processor is stuck at 12x.  Checking IOReg, my C and P states are all loaded.  I've tried a number of different things from DropSSDT, to changing bios settings, and even generating a new SSDT, but without any luck.  If I don't load my SSDT, I get 3 states, 12x 32x and my max turbo state, but of course I get this error (X86PlatformPlugin::publishACPIStates - Failed to get max non-turbo PState. Set max non-turbo PState to default value 1).  So not loading it gives me the error but I get 3 states, and loading my SSDT, I get no X86PlatformPlugin errors but only a 12x state.

 

I don't have any AICPUPMI data to post because instead of freezing my system the kext now causes a KP if I load it after I boot into OSX.  I'll try to give myself some extra time tonight so I can get some logs to post.

Ok, I now have a patched BIOS with MSR 0xE2 unlocked. I rolled pack the original patched AICPUPM from the first post.

 

But results are the same. frequency range is: 30...36

 

So turbo is working good, but not the rest. Also there seems to be a problem with C-States. Although they are correc in ioregistry, AICPUI doesn't show a value for C-State residency.

But AICPUI tells me the all cores go to C6 state, that's weird!

The X86Platform debug log, looks really fine, except one thing: maxGuaranteedTurboPState 4, freq 3300 & using maxFreq 3300

 

This should be 3600MHz. But anyway I reach 3600Mhz....

Also the max efficient p-state is correct. (1200MHz)

 

@omni: any progress on a new version? I would like to test something knew, if you have anything 

 

EDIT: after a while 0xE2 gets changed to 0x401 which means lowest C-State is C2

The patched AICPUPM KPed my machine a few moments after boot the first couple times but I was able to get the following results.

Some of you have not read my OP more closely. You must use 10.9.2 for this because that's the one that has all the goodies for MacPro6,1.

 

Also, the patched binary AICPM I linked only comes with 10.9 that ships with MacPro6,1 so have that in mind.

 

It is imperative that you have you SSDT in order.

 

Your BIOS MSR 0xE2 needs to be unlocked because OS X will read and write enabled C-state values through it. I did not try with a MSR patched version yet because that's not in the current scope of this test.

 

I'm updating the OP with more tips, newer version of the binaries, etc.

Sorry for noob question, but how I can understand if my AsRock X79 Extreme 9 Bios is MSR 0xE2 unlocked or not?

Using nullcpuPM or disabler.kext in my Extra folder I could achieve 12,30,33,36 steps with a Xeon 2690V2 cpu, but I was not able to start any new AICPUPMI,  but only first version of it, without KP

Once you boot up, load AppleIntelCPUPowerMangementInfo.kext and look for

 

MSR_PMG_CST_CONFIG_CONTROL.(0xE2)

 

If it has a value like 0x....NN8NNN then your MSR 0xE2 is locked.

 

You could take my AICPM binary for IB and patch the WRMSR 0xE2 bits, then try and see if it works for you.

I've updated the OP and confirmed that this patch works in 10.9, so you do not need to use 10.9.2.

 

What someone might want to test is whether it works with any other platform beside MacPro6,1 (it probably does).

 

In order to get MacPro6,1 in 10.9, you need to edit /System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist to include the Mac-F60DEB81FF30ACF6 which is MacPro6,1 platform.

 

Also, your /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/X86PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources/ folder must include the Mac-F60DEB81FF30ACF6.plist for above to work.

No I have a 6 core CPU - 4930K to be precise. My System SSDT contains in fact only the "CpuPm" table, but this is a real monster, with a whopping 378144 lines of code!!! OMG, that's the only thing I can say .... I have no clue what is happening there. Of course I can upload this beast, but first of all, I will share my latest findings:

 

So I played a bit with some settings and the Intel Power Gadget. Here is the original state, stuck at 34x and no PM. Note that in all of these screens I show a geekbench run, and the idle phase thereafter.

So lots of heat and power wasted, running Geekbench does not add much further then - not good!

 

next, here is the screen with the patched kext and a custom SSDT, generated by Pikes script:

So much less energy and heat emitted, but unfortunately stuck at that at the same time. (12x Multiplier). Actually Geekbench was also 3x slower.

 

Now, things get interesting. I thought that there might be something wrong with Pikes script. I deleted everything except the ACST method, since without that you get the _ACST error messages. I also had to leave Name (APSN, 0x05) or else I would get a message that max Turbo state could not be detected. I did NOT drop the original SSDT and merely added this one. But still I am stuck at x12!

 

Now, things get even more interesting! Next step was to DROP the system SSDT table.

 

Then I get these error messages:

Yeah, so the tables are missing completely! But look at the result:

So you see that the frequency is actually changing now! Not much, but I got frequencies from around 2.7 to 3.7 GhZ while testing. And also Power consumption now actually fluctuates MUCH more - depending what I am doing - ranging from 9W to 80W. But I still do not get it ... Surely this may be not the final solution but looks way better to me. But why? Would never have expected it this way.

Ok, so use Pike's script to generate your P-States but replace his ACST method with the one I provided in the OP.

 

Make sure to Drop your system SSDT, include APSN (0x05) and APLF (0x00) in C000 scope, and see what happens, I think you are getting pretty close.

When I do exactly that, I am at x12 again. When I delete his APSS entries and all references, PM is back (albeit with all these errors shown above). And in fact when I look at my output, it seems that this is actually working, including Turbo. I mean 10W idle consumption, is that supposed to go even lower? Still wondering why it is still showing me around x34 most of the time then, with only occasional downward spikes.

 

So it does not seem to matter which ACST method I use. FWIW I also looked at my System SSDT and there I found a NPSS entry, linked from _PSS - which looked a bit different, conatining less states. But when using that (by copying to my SSDT and renaming to APSS) - I am at x12 again.

 

So I seem to miss the correct entries for APSS?

Also pikes script is wrong on the P-states for the IvyBridge-E cpu (for one It's IvyBridge not Haswell and, I think - i7-4930k's lowest state is 1200 not 800).

Also, it seems AICPMI is just not accurate at reporting P-states, at least not for the IB/SB Xeon core CPUs. You have to leave it running for a while and even then you will not see them all. Either that, or Mavericks is way too busy to relax and run at a lowest states.

 

But that can't be it, because when running HWMonitor I see my CPU Package Cores drop to below 2W and CPU Package Total below 11W usage, and I have a dual 2.6GHz setup so they could not possibly be running at 26x and consume only 11W.

 

Something is not reporting properly, either AICPMI or HWMonitor.

Could be, but coming from intels power gadget you can see cpu idling at 1200mhz ~6W.

Your SSDT ACST method appears exactly the same as mine, but are you dropping your system SSDT, because you really should?

 

What I believe to be incorrect is your APSN entry - it should be 0x05 (value should be an index not a multiplier). Thats your 22x multiplier which is your max-non turbo state (normal operating CPU clock).

 

As for APLF, I though that value stores the max efficient power state, which in your case should be 0x1C.

 

Oh, and add both APSN and APLF to all CPU scopes as that's what the original Apple SSDT does.

 

Intel Power Gadget is probably correct in those readings, which means that AICMPI is probably not entirely accurate and should be used in combination with other readings only.

 

Bottom line is that your SpeedStep appears to be working, according to IPG readings. :)

No. Your assumption is not correct. AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementInfo.kext is correctly reading all reached package P-States stored by calls to wrmsr 0x199 in XCPM and AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement – see the disassembled code, but Apple is using limiters when it comes to writing the MSR we read. Hence the limited number of P-States people see with certain model identifiers. One example is the iMac. Remember?

 

The difference is that the Intel Power Gadget does it differently. It shows you the actual wattage, and uses that to calculate other stuff. The question now is what do people want to see? The data stored by Apple or what the Intel Power Gadget shows you.

 

I like to add that when I made a test version available on my blog. One that does it the Intel Gadget way, that people immediately started to say that it shows the wrong P-States. In short. Make up your mind folks ;)

Also. I had two reports in my blog from people with working Turbo P-States without a bin-patch, be it limited, so I still don't understand why you need to bin-patch stuff.
