PunkNugget Posted April 13, 2013 Share Posted April 13, 2013 Hey Everyone: I have another MacMod that I wanted to post. This one was a bit challenging (as more custom cutting was needed). Here was my setup: - ASRock X79 Extreme9 Motherboard - i7 Intel 3930K CPU - 64GB GSkill F3-19200CL10Q2-64GBZHD 2400MHz RAM - EVGA GTX 580 3GB Hydro GPU - 2 x 240GB Kingston HyperX SSD's - 1 x 1TB Western Digital Velociraptor 10,000 RPM HD - 2 x Kingwin KF-253-BK 2.5" (SSD) & 3.5" (HD) Multi-Function Hot Swap Racks w/USB 3.0 Hub - Silverstone ST-1500 PSU - Silverstone FT02 PC Casel - Silverstone AP182 180mm 500-2000 RPM Fans - Magicool 540 Triple 180mm Radiator - All Koolance Watercooling parts (they are really the best solid built products) - Ice Dragon Cooling nanofluid - Mayhems UV Coloring - DemciFlex Magnetic Custom made to order filter (no other company like this one, truly one of a kind) I decided to use my original Silverstone FT02 case, but this time I decided to actually cut out the bottom completely to provide all the room necessary for the PURE airflow that I was looking for when I installed this BEAST of a rad. It actually fit perfectly snug in the unit itself with little adjusting. It just fit. I then just put the DemciFlex filter over the exposed bottom of where the airflow would be coming through. After I was able to take the solid aluminum outer shell and put it back on the case (as the bottom part actually serves to not only allow the air to flow in from the bottom of the case, but to also protect the radiator as the base of the shell serves as a shield). I was then able to (with unusual) ease, able to tuck under and fit (with 1 mm to spare) the 3 x NEW and improved Silverstone AP182. Man! Are these fans whisper quiet when on they're set to 500 RPM... and they pull some major CFM. Stay tuned, more tomorrow, I need to go to sleep... So instead of laying out all of them I will just give you the most important ones. I tell ya, this mid-life crisis thing isn't so bad, especially when you put it to work to create stuff like this. Next, I went with the ASRock Extreme9 motherboard, well, because no one else did. My gut was telling me this might be a good motherboard to use. By the way, this build would have not happened had it not been for all the help that I had received from one major player, and that person is RampageDev !!! He saved me months and months of headaches by not only fixing all my issues that I had with my SR-2 (HACKINBEAST) system, he helped me streamline my Extra folder to where there is now only three files. He trash most of everything that didn't need to be in their which was slowing up my boot up times and the other file system in the S/L/E folder. So this time around I decided to use him solely for this build and no one else as he helped me create my own custom DSDT file as well as (again) streamlining my Extra folder. He also helped me tweak my overclock to push it to its limits. Although I did initially receive some great help from the tech guys at GSkill (Thanks Anthony) and ASRock (I think his name was Mike) to get the processor up to 5.2 GHz and the RAM to work at 2133 MHz (9-10-11-28). But will get more into that a little bit later. Here are the rest of the pics (and a hint) of why I called it Lemon Lime Twist! The next set of pics will be the finished work. Again, I hope you guys like and and will vote (as all of you were an inspiration from my last build to do this one). Thanks again, this was challenging and fun. ATTENTION: Click on the Spoiler "Show" tab (below) to SEE the full color pics. In the end Rampage and I pushed this thing to 5.2GHz with the i7 3930K CPU and 64GB of GSkill RAM @ 2133GHz (11-11-11-34). The RAM would not allow the full 2400 MHz (as it's rated for that) as a result of some kind of conflict with the ASRock Extreme9 mobo, but that's fine. Better to have some power in reserve than not enough. Look at the GB though; we hit an all time 3930K high of 24,818 !!! We almost got over 25,000. I know if we would've performed the GB test in Windoze we would've received a GB of 30,000+. But that's a power management issue with Mac, which I hope will get corrected in time with future Mac OS updates. I've really enjoyed this build and felt that Rampage and I work well together. We understand each others' talents and weaknesses (me being the builder, he being the programmer). I couldn't have have pushed this machine as far as I did without him. I'll just say this, ANYONE who reads this and is needing ANY help with ANY system setup (or are considering a build that you have in mind), PLEASE CONTACT HIM FIRST !!! Believe me, you'll save yourself MONTHS OF HEADACHES !!! Again, I was up and running crankin' my OC within a few hours. Oh lastly, please don't leave Rampage hangin' without at least contributing some funds toward his cause. To me he was worth EVERY PENNY of the what he asked for (and he NEVER demanded it; only asked). Here's his site if you need his help. Thank you for shearing your experience. First, thanks for the big-ups and the vote! The reason why I choose NOT to use a G4 or G5 case is because I want to customize it the way I want to and quite frankly the Silverstone cases (like the Raven RV01, RV02, FT02 and TJ11) are the BEST when it comes to airflow purposes as the mobo is positioned 90˚ where the back ports are now on top (for easier reach), and the GPUs are vertical (for better airflow for the fans). Also, as science and nature work together, why not the PC case too. Cold air comes in from the bottom and pushes the warm air to the top and out of the case. That makes for a cooler internal system. Plus I can shove 2 or 3 GPUs in there, along with all the watercooling parts and get as creative as I want with my PC case (like the Silverstone FT02 that was used for this new build). Or for that matter the TJ11 where I can pack it to the hilt with 3 to 4 GPUs and a Dual CPU with 2 FULL sized rads and Push/Pull fans along with waterblocking for all the parts (i.e.; GPUs, CPUs and even the mobo). There is NO WAY that can be done on a mid-sized MacPro case. They're just too small. Lastly, out of all PC cases the Silverstone FT02 is the only case out there that comes close (in it's design) to looking like the G5 case, but it's black and I can add my own logo on there without a pre-etched one. That's the reason why I chose that route. Plus, it's original and completely different from any other system out there. Remember Apple's mantra "Think Different?" How would I do that "spoiler tag" thing? I have cable so it only takes about 5 to 10 seconds at max to load everything. If anyone else is going through this, please let me know and I will see what I can do to take care of that and set it up a bit different if it will help.
