I'm curious to get some thoughts on Tiger's Dashboard vs. Konfabulator.

I think the way Dashboard set up the drag and drop type interface for widgets is spectacular, but I completely despise the fact that I cant have my widgets constantly floating without have to call up their "pane".

It kind of defeats the purpose for a lot of widgets if you ask me. If I had to navigate to a seperate pane to access my itunes remote, I'd just open up itunes itself.

Thoughts?

Can you turn dashboard off completely?

Dashboard would probably run much nicer on a real mac os, but I'd use konfabulator on an x86 install.

Any particular reason? Has anyone tried them both on x86? Does one run faster/better than the others?


I just found this, thought I would share. It allows you to run Dashboard widgets freely on the desktop, instead of having to call them up

::UPDATE:: the above link is a trial, and it runs like a fat kid in knee deep water on x86.

Konfabulator takes up to much ram .. 8mb ram per widget on xp

Yeah .. i didnt realize it either until i tried running it with 256mb ram on a laptop, and then i looked in the task manager and saw it was using up a huge amount of ram per widget

Erm, its only taking up 10 MB on my side, and I've got 5 widgets open!

Well, for the sake of the current situation, I'm curious which runs less memory intensive, Dash or Konfab.

I'm too lazy to find out, so if anyone does, let us know hehe

and i couldnt find dashboard or konfabulator in the Activity Monitor in OSX

Dashboard just flies, provided you have QE and CI anyway.  I like it.

The exes are only taking up 2 MB per widget.

just upgraded from 1.99 to 2.1.1 and its varying between 1.9mb to 8mb .. with most hovering around 3mb, so it could just be that i was using an outdated version of konfabulator(had it set not to check for updates so i didnt know there were updates )

Dashboard is awesome under PPC; I think there's a debug hack that lets you float widgets. Still, I bet it doesn't work that well under x86. I haven't tried it yet.

Well, at least we won't need to port widgets over to x86.

If you'd like one of your Dashboard widgets to be available all the time, instead of only when you have activated Dashboard via F13, then activate the Dashboard dvelopment mode. Open the Terminal and type 'defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES' and press Return. Then logout and log back in again. Now debugging mode is activated. To get a widget off of the Dashboard and onto your desktop, just do the following:
Activate Dashboard by pressing F13 (or whatever key you've assigned to Dashboard).
Begin dragging the widget.
Press F12 again, before letting up on the mouse button.
Drop the widget wherever you want it.
You can do the same thing in reverse to drag the widget back onto the Dashboard. Also of interest: while a widget is frontmost, you can press Command-R to reload it. (This may be necessary if a widget is buggy and gets messed up somehow.) There's even a nifty Core Image-based twirl effect to accompany the reload.


Got that from Mac OS Hints, and I know it works on normal macs as I use it on my Mini~

Dashboard looks cooler the whole swoooshing in thing is awesome. konfab just fades but i'm stuck with konfab as i'm a poor XP user

I'm just training myself for the switch when it comes, got the objectdock and konfab and the safari skin for firefox. when a better version of the dvd is released i'm going to buy a hackintosh kit and have both this XP and a hackintosh side by side with a KVM switch. can't wait! XP for Play, Mac For work (and play)
