OS X on the MSI Wind, Before it's Released

Numberzz

A hacker, and a member of our forums, has managed to get Mac OS X Leopard running on the MSI Wind. This is what jav had to say about getting it on his MSI Wind. It's translated from spanish.

Well, here it is. The new MSI Wind running Kalyway 10.5.2. I still have to make some adjustments, such as the resolution and the wireless card, but I couldn't stop myself from posting these images that I'm sure will get the interest from more than one person. Ethernet and Bluetooth work right out of the box, so I'm really expecting a lot from this small notebook.

All that and the MSI Wind isn't even going to be released until July 7th.

EDIT: It appears that the sound also works OTB. The resolution and wireless are the only things that we know of that don't work.

I'm sure I DID see an option on the dynamic F11 list for the SD slot?

P

Just checked. Didn't see it. However, it did show up under the USB section of the BIOS. I had legacy support turned off, but even with it turned on, it doesn't show as an option under the Boot section of the BIOS....

Still have my fingers crossed about the sound, especially the microphone, as that would make this puppy 100%.

Hibernate is the one big thing missing for me, plus the 6 cell. I think i'm gonna buy a US keyboarded Wind too to get round the 'dead key' problem (backslash between left shift and z) that I have NO idea how to fix!

Hi, I'm desperate for one of these fantastic little things now!

I've looked on PCWorlds website, and they don't have any in stock at the moment (High Wycombe), so do you think I could ask for the display model? And if so could I even get a discount (a bit cheeky, i know!) I just really want one, now!

I managed to blag the display model in Bolton. They were a bit funny about it, and I had to wait in store for about an hour while they reinstalled windows (which I assured them wasn't necessary!!).

Hi! I hope you can help me..I tried twice to install Leopard on msi wind, one with Leo4all v.3 and the other time with Kalyway 10.5.2 distro.. I followed your instructions on the wiki and choosed vanilla kernel (9.2) and the other options you said (on your wiki I didn't find options to select about the chipset, so I let it blank)... All two times I had the same issue.. It installed well, booted well giving me the "WELCOME" page, asking the language, the keyboard, and then asking if I wanted to transfer my files... At that point, when I choose "Not transfer", it remains about 2 minutes without doing anything, then restarts with WELCOME page!! I never see before this type of error... Could you please help me???I partitioned the disk and on the other partition there is the xp original version from msi..What could I have to do?Thanxxxx!DanielaHi! So I'm going to take the plunge and void the warranty. Which wireless card fits without any modifications and works out of the box? Or should I just quit my whining, grit my teeth and go the Dell 1390 route?

Apparently the Dell 1490 works without any modifications: ;)

I have an idea regarding the warranty too...

Would it be possible to remove the warranty sticker, photocopy it, then print it onto sticky paper so that you can open it as many times as you like, just putting a new sticker over it?

Or, if you don't own a scanner, could you just type what it says in a similar font onto sticky paper (I'm sure the guys at the place you bought it would know no different!) :P

Just a thought, but it might be worth a shot!

EDIT: the link wouldn't work ( I don't know how to do them :( )

You could probably just remove it "very" slowly. I talked to the guys here in Taiwan and they said they talked to MSI and were told they could crack open the box and add RAM without voiding the warranty, so for a few extra bucks, I bet they'd have no problem doing the same for a wireless card.

Sometimes, I really love this country. If you put a Chinese chop on something, it's like a gold license to do whatever you want.

The 1490 is more expensive than the 1390. Trying to go cheap here.

Oh, and tested iChat video today. The Wind can't start a video chat but can participate in one. I did it via bonjour without any problems. The camera quality on this thing isn't so hot though.

Unless someone can point me in the direction of a sub-$30 100% working wireless, I'm going to get the 1390.

Oh sorry, I wasn't taking price into account here, but you could just take the metal shielding off the Dell card rather than messing with the innards of the laptop?

Also, what do you mean by a "Chinese Chop"?

You could also try the card that comes with the Medion rebrand of this, i'm sure that wouldn't need any modification.

The name of it is Ralink RT2860 (Again, taken from http://wind-osx86.wikispaces.com/Akoya )

Hope I've helped! :P

Iv been reading every review for the two but theres not much in it. In the laptopmag website review their msi wind seems to have the overclocking function and they have been supplied a 6 cell battery. Both of these arent supplied with in the UK model. Also the other thing that tips the scales is that the 1000h has better benchmark scores, better lcd viewing angles, dolby speakers and for the same price (in the UK both are £350) it also comes with a 6 cell battery. The only thing going for the wind is better keyboard size, better battery life providing you shell out for a 6 cell and i guess if you think it looks better.

Ill let you decide.....

Thats a lot of work, why not just use a hairdryer on low heat and ' melt ' it off.. i used to do it all the time taking warranty stickers off of xbox 360's.

Then you just put the intact sticker aside, do what you need to do, warm it up again and re-apply.

Hairdryer, a sharp knife and tweezer ftw.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of doing too. Kind of link re-shrinkwrapping a package using a hairdryer.

As far as the EEEPC 1000 goes, I played with one in the store (all of those sweet little netbooks are out and about here, no problems) and it was significantly heavier than the MSI Wind (1.4kg versus 1.05kg). That was a dealbreaker for me. At that weight, it would be better just to get a 12". I can hold the Wind in one hand without any exertion or effort, but couldn't do that with the 1000. Also, I found the Wind had a better keyboard. Now, here the price of the two is the same, but I also thought the Wind had a better overall package. The only netbook with a keyboard even better than the Wind was the Acer Aspire One. Almost full size. It was also lighter (if I remember correctly) and cheaper (Wind NT$18,000 - Aspire One NT$13,000) but only came with an 8 GB SSD. I wanted more storage than that and from what I've read the SSD is overrated as a battery saver and has a defined, finite read/write lifespan.

I went ahead and ordered the 1490 on ebay ($15, free shipping). Will pick it up when I head back to America in a few days and install it then. Should be interesting to go through customs with this lappy. Hopefully I can avoid paying duty.

Tried to pick up the Ralink card and called the factory, but they don't sell to customers, only OEM. Also tried to go through a local store as a replacement part, but they never got back to me. Might try to call them again today. A Chinese chop is like a signature, only with Chinese characters and totally unique. More like a fingerprint I guess. If someone steals your chop, they can do a lot of damage. So having that chop on something (depending on the person) can be like a get out of jail free card or a VIP pass.

Hi! From yesterday I'm trying to install leopard 10.5.2 kalyway on my msi wind.. I already wrote here cause I had a problem about the welcome screen and you helped me and I thank you very much for this!! Now I can start leopard without problems, but I cannot set the resolution to 1024x600! I tried twice, one choosing the gma950 in the installation, and the other, the last, not setting anything on it in the moment of the installation. The result is always the same.. First of all, I install kext drivers (0x27ae - the 3 files, whith kext helper) - then I restart, and the screen now is 800x600 with a black right part.. if I look in system preferences I can choose other resolutions, but the nextest is 1024x768, and with that I don't see the leopard dock anymore).. So, I tried to install Apple Graphics Update, but, after reboot, the screen is again 800x600 without other chooses... Could you please help me???

Leopard on Msi is wonderful I love it!!! :-)))

Please read and follow the directions (to the letter) in Post 201.

How To Install - Foolproof

As Paul pointed out, don't install any drivers until you are fully updated to 10.5.4 or you'll bugger the system. I learned that one the hard way.

BTW has anyone here tried OSX on eeePC 901, or Acer Aspire One or the Dell Mini Notebook??

Some one here tried on the Acer Aspire One. Results and in English. Seems Audio and Wifi dont work OTB.

I would love to see it running on the eee 1000 so that i could get a good comparison. If wifi and audio worked OTB i think i would go for the 1000 as opposed to the wind. As meteparozzi mentioned weight is the only thing that is making this decision hard. But MSI has really annoyed me by making the price £350 in the UK which is over $700usd, why should UK customers pay more!!! The Asus machine is £350 worldwide so i am not so fussed about that since it comes with a 6 cell battery. The only other option i have is to buy a rebranded wind known as an Advent 4211 which is £280 but i cant stan the colour scheme, no restore disks and most importantly its got ADVENT written on it! The Acer is a no go for me as their build quality is notoriously bad over all their products.

Just got my new MSI Wind (Advent) - I got the last one in PCWorld ;)

Only one problem so far, the laptop really doesn't like my wifi; it keeps cutting out for no reason - VERY irritating

O,h and one final thing, I can't seem to find any "warranty void if removed" stickers on it... a bit odd
